Today’s Question by the reader : Stina

by Paulo Coelho on May 8, 2009

Should one listen to ones heart or brain? Or a mixture of both?

The world is a mixture of matter and spirit so: listen to your brain whenever you need to make material and practical decisions.

But listen to your heart whenever the problem at hand concerns your dreams and hopes.

As Saint Paul wrote in his letter to the Corinthians: “If I have all the eloquence of men or of angels, but speak without love, I am simply a gong booming or a cymbal clashing. If I have the gift of prophecy, understanding all the mysteries there are, and knowing everything, and if I have faith in all its fullness, to move mountains, but without love, then I am nothing at all. If I give away all that I possess, piece by piece, and if I even let them take my body to burn it, but am without love, it will do me no good whatever.”

The seat of love is within the heart whereas fear roams in the mind and creates illusions with which we learn to identify. A pure mind produces thoughts/decisions/perspectives fed by the heart. There is a definite and calm certainty in the quality of the decision. A troubled mind wonders with ifs and shoulds. The mastered mind channels knowing and not knowledge. at least, this has been my experience…

Hm. Sometimes I still struggle to tell the difference between the voice of my heart and that of my head. I’m afraid to choose, afraid that I make it to be what I want it to be rather than what it is.

How does one tell? Does not knowing the difference mean I’ve never truly listened to my heart?

I have thought of this passage from Corinthians often this past year. I find it equally as important as the rest of the chapter that everybody always quotes. It is so true. Without love even a martyr is wasting his time. He can have his principles but misses the point. He forgot how to listen to his heart and therefore does not love.

A very wise man once told me, “The head is subservient to the heart.”
I think of his statement very often when I am in a dilemna. Once I quiet my thoughts and listen to my heart, the answer comes much easier… and it always comes.

If is a serious matter, you must use ration but always keep love into your heart. Because many times if you listen to your heart, it can`t be wrong. How many of us follow the first instinct/ Very few. And as time passes we discover that the first impression was the right one. But nomatter what are the consequences of our deeds, we must keep love in heart. Because the heart with no love is like a blind bird singing: a beautiful song, but with no life inside.

What about impossible love?
Two already married people, who don’t live in the same country, who don’t have the same religion and who both have young children who need them?

Which voice should one follow? The voice of reason or the voice of love?

And yet with love, there comes the experience of pain.

Yes, sure. Just would be nice knowing when is the right moment to use some more brain, or some more heart. If we understand it only after, is bit too late, and in my life I guess I did few mistakes, using too much heart in taking decisions, other times too little sensibility. Well, but as I know, we learn from mistakes, and only living experiences we can understand where we were wrong. I am bit too Romantic, sensitive, at times even shy, blushing at all wrong moments,so I guess maybe, just maybe I was using too much heart in past years. I dont say I will change, because this is my nature. Maybe I try to reflect more now.
