Association of the Week: The Triangle

by Paulo Coelho on May 11, 2009

The triangle is one of the most elementary symbolic figures due to its geometric aspect: it’s basically the simplest way of linking three points in space with straight lines.

Yet not all triangles have the same meaning. In excavations made near to Lepenski Vir in the Danube, there was found many blocs of stones shaped like triangles and inscriptions in bones also with triangular shapes. These vestiges date from the Stone Age and are mainly composed of inverted triangles which most probably refer to the feminine sex.

In more recent times, including in Alchemic texts, the inverted triangle would symbolize water (reproducing in a geometric fashion the shape of a drop) whilst the triangle with its point up would refer to the masculine element of fire.

In the system drawn from Pythagoras (Born between 580 and 572 BC, died between 500 and 490 BC), the delta letter symbolized the cosmic birth, whilst for Hindus the same letter would represent the goddess Durga – source of life and incarnation of femininity.

In the Christian era, the triangle was increasingly used as a symbol of the Trinity and later on, during the Baroque period, God’s eye was incrusted at its center. Such a vision can also be found in the Zohar: “God’s eyes and foreheads form in the sky a triangle and they reflect mutually in water in the shape of a triangle.”

Now you take the floor: what do you associate with the triangle?

Triangles? What a challenging one, particularly when coming to relationships. I think the triangle is best considered but never tempered with in intimate relationships because, firstly, it nullifies the foundation on which the bond was formed and creates loop-holes through which toxins can permeate an otherwise functional relationship. Secondly, a triangle robs the relationship of its prosperity because it leads you to believe that the “other” part is better positioned, whereas it’s an illusion of the same seen from a different angle. In conclusion, I believe that a triangle is better as a device to strengthen civil works and such, but never as potent in relationships; for it is that which causes rifts, mistrust, heartache and complete mayhem in relationships. And claiming that you can love two people at the same time with the same intensity,is but a fickle cry for escapism. It is greed personified; having your bread buttered on both sides. A trait quite evident in men, because they are all just bloody pricks!

I always think “strength” when i hear triangle.
I know it’s used a lot in construction of bridges, and race cars and trusses just for this reason.

I never really thought of it in relation to relationships until I read:
‘the triangle is the only shape that cannot be deformed without changing the length of one of its sides’
I don’t know where I’ve read this, but it’s stuck with me.

Perhaps where relationships are concerned, the strength comes from the stability of having a ‘backup’ a person there to fulfill the parts the other doesn’t fulfill. Maybe by having three no one person is truly deformed in the relationship. It’s all too easy to lose parts of yourself when you are with another. It’s easy to become something not innately you when trying to fill up someone’s space. Perhaps by balancing between people it is easier to give fully and yet remain intact because you are reminded who you are by seeing yourself reflected in two other people. Perhaps it’s easier to narrow down what you want and need, or even who you truly are.

I’ll compare it to taking temperature readings, or blood pressure readings: taken once it’s a good idea of the number you are looking for but taking it 3 times and finding the average is a more accurate representation of the true number you are looking for.

So perhaps, love triangles may be the average. Maybe it is closer to the what that person is searching for. Maybe that average allows a person to find the things they cannot live without.
Maybe by being in a triangle people can find what will make them strong, without ‘deforming’ the other sides of the triangle.
Maybe.

The Triangle: I had a problem that concerned two men, i had strong feelings for both of them. They both knew and were aware of each other, knowing I was in love with both of them. My husband fufilled my physical needs the other man in my life provided for me mentally. Both parties made up my world and my mind and heart both in confusion wondering which one I was going to choose. Neither one I wanted to lose. The man i wanted to choose, had showered me with a life that I wasn’t use to. The other one, had mentally abused me. The situation had got me under pressure, I knew when this was over one of them would suffer. After six years and a long road ahead of me, I chose to stay with my husband and work it through. My other love will have a place in my heart, the time we spent together will never be forgotten. I realize that the other one was a substitute of what my husband use to be, and when he seen the influence of what the other man had over me, my husband apologized, and now I am at peace.

You know dear Savita, I read a book by Mika Waltari, and in it the beginning was like that, a man was telling that the numbers of rocks gathered on the road of his life was towards the end. I liked the metaphor, the rocks were different in shape or colour as the years or events passed. me words to poor to describe. It was in “The Etrusc”, an interesting novel.Much love, Alexandra

Triangle. The heart is a triangle, though plump, curvilinear, a triangle still. The female pubic region is a triangle outlined by a tangle of thick hair. A triangle pointing down. The male, in reverse, a triangle pointing up. The petals of some flowers, the leaves of certain species of trees – triangular in form, though fleeting, temporal. If you look at a map, where a river meets the sea, you will almost always discover a triangle, whether broad or narrow, deeply etched in the earth’s surface, of teasingly subtle. Delta. The place where the waters of the earth re-enter their home in the infinite. Delta. The fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. In iconography, we see triangles, commonly – symbol of the Holy Trinity, pointing always upward, toward the Father. In art, such as that of DaVinci, we see another kind of triangle hidden beneath the surface of the brush-strokes, discreetly disguised, until our eyes are opened to it – that same triangle, pointing toward the Divine, but with man and woman forming the base, their two bodies, the walls of a unified Temple.

As a sort of hobby, I collect rocks, but not in the usual way. I know very little about their composition, about the properties that form them. I collect them and organize them, instead, according to several categories of my own devising. First, there are the rocks that I select because I am fascinated by what the water has done to them, how, over time, the current in a riverbed or drops falling from above have created pits and crevices, or polished the surface smooth as silk. These are the rocks shaped by water. Then there are the rocks that have been crushed or shattered, split in two by some object heavier or more dense than they are. I select these rocks for what is revealed by the violence of collision: often times, the inside of the rock is of a wholly different material, a completely different color and texture from the exterior. These rocks I select for the inner secrets they have revealed against their will. Then there are the rocks with holes in them – not just pits or indentions, but holes that go all the way through from one side to the other. These too, I suppose, are formed by water, but I put them in a different category because they are very special. Rocks like this, one could wear as a sort of talisman. Or, if one so wished, one could place them on a string together and hang them in the air, perhaps from the branch of a tree or in a doorframe – a sort of magical emblem. These sorts of rocks are also windows. If you hold them up to your eye, you can peer through these holes, and even if the holes are tiny, there is much that they might reveal. So, these are the rocks or reverence and magic and revelation.. Then there are the heart shaped rocks, and you would be surprised to learn just how many of these there are. They are everywhere, in fact. Large and small, flat or three-dimensional. Dark hearts and light hearts, smooth polished hearts and hearts that are porous and rough. Some are perfect, as though shaped by the hands of a highly skilled sculptor, others are sadly mis-shapen, almost tragic in form, as though they have suffered greatly. Some are plump, like ripe pieces of fruit; others are skinny or shrunken or withered, as though malnourished by the earth that formed them. So, those are the rocks that imitate and reveal the human heart in all its myriad forms. Then, lastly, there are the rocks that are triangles. Again, like the hearts, these are surprisingly plentiful and not at all difficult to find. Like the rest, they come in numerous textures and sizes, forms and colors. Some are more rounded, others sharply angular. Some are thin and lie flat, while others are more like pyramids that easily stand up. I don’t know what it is about this group of rocks that fascinates me so much. I can’t quite describe the feeling they give me, or the allure that incites me to pick them up. There is just something very primal, very essential about that shape. Finding one of these rocks, for me, is almost like finding at atom or some other basic molecular structure from which the universe itself was initially formed. In that sense, it is like the invisible made visible in this solid form – the Infinite rendered finite and tangible. That, for me, is the essence of the triangle.

One other thing I might mention about the triangle – the masculine and the feminine forms. The male pointing up, the female down. The strength of the masculine triangle lies in the solidity of its form – the fact that it sits upon a broad base, which lends it stability and renders it secure. This is the stability of knowledge and reason, the solidity of the material world. The feminine triangle is reversed – precariously, almost magically, it balances impossibly upon that single thin point. The strength of the feminine triangle then is its poise, its grace, its amazing balance and ability to defy the laws of gravity. This is the precarious balancing act of the spirit as it takes human form, the amazing ability of the intuition to defy all the laws of time and space. Together, these two forms, these two opposite triangles, create the perfect shape – one that is, at once, solid, stable, secure, and yet able to break free of the ties that bind us to the material world. These two triangles, when united, are body and spirit as one. Here at the center-point of these two conjoined triangles lies the meeting point between the material and the spiritual realms. The solidity of reason coupled with the flight of the intuition.

I associate the triangle with The Holy Trinity, but also with what Drunvalo Melchizedek says about the Mer-Ka-Bah. Two intwined triangles that are around every human and all things which can be activated through a meditation to travel to other dimensions.
I also associate the triangle with the All Seeing Almighty, as in the triangle with the eyes as mentioned in the Zohar.
For me, the triangle is a very spiritual symbol.

Acho que o triângulo invertido é a posição correta, por ser a forma feminina, a grande taça que é completada pelo triângulo “normal” representando o masculino. Na fundição entre os dois gera a estrela, a luz, a fonte da vida. Um dos desenhos do Universo.

I think marriage is like a triangle, with God at the top, and the two base points being the husband and wife. The closer each of them get to God, the closer they find they are to each other =) I’ve always believed that relationships are best enhanced spiritually.

Interesting to see different triangle perceptions!

A triangle can be a symbol of masculine while the circle is the feminine.

The triangle has been since early civilizations, the symbol of the trilogy or the triad that makes all existence possible. It has been interpreted as:

* The father, the mother and the son
* The Father the Son and the Holy Spirit
* The male, the female and the creative power
* The sky, the earth and the living creatures
* The union of two that creates the third
* The perfect union when two become one
* The prayer elevated from all Earth to the one God
* The power of the One to become All
* Each moment of Life where you can take two decisions or ways
From Google!!

As a child I was fascinated with geometry.
The triangle brings to my mind Ibsen’s .. sinful ‘triangle’!!
