Today’s Question by the reader : Joséphina

by Paulo Coelho on May 15, 2009

Is Fashion, the reign of appearances for you?

I don’t have anything against fashion. It can be the expression of freedom and a way of liberation. It’s the case for instance of Coco Chanel who single handedly revolutionized conventions.

Of course, there are some tendencies that don’t really convince and can be quite alienating.

It’s always a question of perspective.

my grandmother was a fashion designer in cashmere knitwear [including for celebrities in her time..1940s+]
and I really saw that fashion was about wearing well-tailored [ie: well fitting] clothes and feeling comfortable..
it's when we all have to start wearing spots or the season's colours that I begin to get suspicious ;o))

Marilyn Monroe singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to President John F. Kennedy. After the zenith came the nadir.

Dear Carolena clothes is a way to show our inner personality. It is for me a way of playing our different roles in life.. I like fashion and my daughters criticize me for that, but since I am just a house-wife I do what I like. No profession to put me into patterns.. I believe, the human body is beautiful without the masks, but then everybody looks at others in his own way and vibration.
Everything is in the eyes of the .. beholder! Beauty is like art. Who does not admire Aphrodite of Botticelli? But not everyone can appreciate it.
LOVE,
Thelma.

Thank you Thelma, perhaps you are right, but what I believe was her tragedy was her addiction to cocaine.

I Was kidding about going naked! I like fashion mostly for comfort. I like to dress up depending on my mood. I usually like wearing hippie/ Athena type clothing. Although I do like dressing up in fashionable clothing for the right occasion and the stage.

Thank you dear Thelma.
with love.

We can experience the healing power of color with fashion.

Natural fibers give us a close connection to Earth, allowing us to absorb more negative ions than otherwise.

Many 1,000s of beings are involved in producing just one cotton shirt:

Living creatures in drop of rain.

Birds who fly across sky through the rain.

The soil has countless life forms.

Many 1,000s of People are closely involved in this one shirt by planting, harvesting, shipping, designing, dying, sewing, ironing, packing, trucking, selling, photographing, stocking,
buying, wearing, cleaning. Each step involves so many living creatures:When a delivery truck is on the road, how many insects fly into wind shield and die? When the driver makes eye contact with a driver in a car,how does this affect the rest of the world?

Each person’s own world includes 1,000s of other people, whose thoughts are there for the creation of the shirt. They listen to music created by the thoughts and actions of musicians whose music involves 1,000s of people just to create it.It is an endless , endless revolving exchanging and connecting with our fellow Earth beings, whether human, insect, bacteria, animal, etc.

I respect mending and recycling efforts that people have been making for centuries: Japanese fishermen wore clothing that was mended over and over..Quilters kept their families warm by cutting up old clothes and sewing them into one big piece. We now hang those simple pieces in our museums, galleries and white walls of our homes.

I wonder if one shirt alone could represent the sign of infinity?Could one shirt alone help us to connect with others enough to walk as gently on Mother Earth’s back as possible?

Dear Carolena, do you remember what Marilyn Monroe said when she was asked what she wears when she sleeps?? She said: Just my .. Chanel NO.5!! At that time it was very.. daring. That’s why maybe she was in the dreams of most men in her era. The ultimate sex symbol and such a tragic fate.
LOVE,
Thelma.

So much talk about fashion… Fashion is great! a lot of fun, but for me not so important, or such an issue. Sometimes even just a silly superficial past time… But that can be a good thing too. We have to amuse ourselves somehow!

For me, the perfume and shoes do it! Give me a pair of sexy shoes, and one of my favorite perfumes or colognes, and I’ll even go naked
;)

In front of God we will have to appear with our naked souls…As Mr Paulo also has said several times…it’s all Vanity…Although for generations, the women in my family have had an almost obsession with clothes and fashion. Putting outfits together is my playtime, I forget all about worries and it stresses me down. Good excuse for going shopping? :)

SALVE!

For those who do not understand the Portuguese translation of this is the you tube video that I made, “the eternal contradiction” of Carlos Drummond de Andrade.

Eu, etiqueta
minha gravata e cinto e escova e pente
seja negar minha identidade,
trocá-la por mil, açambarcando
todas as marca registradas,
ora vulgar, ora bizarro,
em língua nacional ou em qualquer língua
(qualquer principalmente).
E nisto me comprazo, tiro glória
Onde terei jogado fora
meu gosto e capacidade de escolher,
minhas idiossincrasias tão pessoais,
tão minhas que no rosto se espelhavam
e cada gesto, cada olhar,
cada vinco da roupa
resumia uma estética?
Hoje sou costurado, sou tecido,
sou gravado de forma universal,
saio da estamparia, não de casa,
da vitrine me tiram recolocam,
Eu sou a coisa, coisamente.

I, label
My pants is stuck in a name
which is not of my baptism or office
a strange name …
My jacket brings reminder of drink
who ever put in your mouth, in this life.
In my shirt, the brand of cigarette
not smoking, not until now have.
I speak half of product
who never experienced
but are reported to my feet.
My tennis is proclaiming color
something not proved
by this taster of long age.
My scarf, my watch, my locksmith
my tie and belt and brush and comb
my cup, my cup
my bath towel and soap
my this, my that,
from the nozzles of the head to my shoes,
are messages,
letters speakers,
visual screams,
order of use, abuse, reincindência,
custom, habit, need,
indispensability
and make me man-traveling ad
slave of the matter announced.
I am, I’m in fashion.
It is sweet to be in fashion, though the fashion
to deny my identity,
change it for a thousand, grasper
All trademarks,
All logos market.
With that innocent me to quit
I was before and I knew so different from other so-even me,
be thinking, sentinte and solidarity
with various other beings and conscious
of its human, invincible condition.
Now I notice,
sometimes vulgar, sometimes bizarre,
in national language or any language
(any mainly).
And it pleased me, shooting glory
of my cancellation.
I am not – you see there – hired ad.
I thoroughly paid
to advertise, to sell
parties in bars beaches pergola pools,
and to view and show this label
the global body that gives
to be wearing sandals and a heart
so alive, independent,
fashion that any bribe or commits.
Where have played out
my taste and ability to choose,
so my personal idiosyncrasies,
so that the face is my mirror
and every gesture, every look,
each fold of clothing
summarizing an aesthetic?
Today I stitched, I tissue,
I recorded on a universal,
get out of printing, no home,
I take the window back,
pulsed object but object
that is offered as a sign of other
static objects, priced.
Why I have so, so proud
it is not me, but Article industrial,
I ask that my name retifiquem.
I no longer be the title of man,
my new name is something.
I am the thing, thing.

Chere Maitre,

Chere Maitre,
Fashion is so important and make fortunes and move fortunes in the world. I am not a fan of self-monitoring radical fashion, if you do not have a bag, or pants that brand person you were in life. On the contrary I think we should always keep our personality, and not let the labels that are more valuable than our basic principles. What concerns the content of “The winner stands alone” I do not bring these types of values, because I think it is surreal to leave this kind of illusion and we can mount the head. I respect those who are faithful followers of fashion, but I n’admire not people who can respect others only to those they have, how they dress, etc..
I became a fan of Coco Chanel, after watching this week’s movie “Coco avant Chanel” by his personality and how it can not be lead by weight, how it was a persistent principle, even if the mass was completely in the opposite direction. I like his strength to believe in its values, which were based on these principles. Although it has become a famous stylist, his ideas are still part of the essential values of life, not artificial elegance of how the importance that a woman is beautiful and it shows, not by his clothes the “superclass” of which it belongs, the priority was that this woman felt al’aise in his body (including the extermination of the brace in their clothes), and free in his mind. Coco Chanel is a person who adopts values important as creating not only a new mode, but a new lifestyle based that money is not always linked elegance, and that the times importance of showing how the person have his feathers and penalties, less elegant and less light it became.
Even if I’m not fan of fashion, I admire the work of stylists, and see this film made myself become a fan of Coco Chanel.
Even today there are those who think that the value of the person is totally involved in what it has to be how to be how much clothing materials in general. Are not my values, and even when I have a lot of money, I will keep my principles that I have the true value of my come back, that no money can buy.
Wanting comfort is something quite different from wanting to hide in the equipment and the values my opinion or Coco Chanel, to be “the winner stands alone” are the true values of life. More than following the fashion, fashion for me is to be faithful to our principles and values in life and who will ever sum of money can buy that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw6lmx-Wmbk&feature=channel_page
Oops, I write too much, I’m sorry, Master, I let go here, I want that you are well al’aise to deny my comments.
Meu amor, my respect and gratitude,

Ca

I think fashion invites people creativity and imagination. What I do not like is how people judge other people because of their fashion. It happens at a very young age. I remember buying Levi jeans, designer jacket, Polo shirt, Nike or Adidas shoes because that is what the young people were wearing at the time and I wanted to be in style.

Fashion… How many of the products we see presented by models can be used by a normal person ? I mean on the street, or in everyday life? Fashion is only a possibility that offers you the occasion to accept certain tendencies, or not. No one is forced to buy expensive apparel, nor extravagant clothes. Is our choice . We can take only few details and add our own imagination and go to a tailor to make a thing we like more.
