Today’s Question by the reader : Adam

Have you ever thought of writing a sequel for the Alchemist?

No – for me a book has a beginning and an end. It has never crossed my mind to write a sequel to any of my books.

  • Dearest Paulo,

    Good to know what you
End-love them both dearly if it's possible to LOVE books like that. But I think you understand. I lethink of sequels to your books.I thought Alchemist and Brida were the most complete among your books. With a Beginning and an End.
I lent Brida to my niece who was here on a visit last month
and I found I was missing it soon after! It's back with me now.

I had quite a few questions in mind after completing The Witch of Portobello, and The Winner stands alone. Perhaps when you start with the discussions,I could ask them.

    Sheela

  • I want a shell too… how do I get it? what are the requirements?

  • I agree Annie, Thelma put it very nicely!
    Love.

  • The winner stands alone is kind of anti-sequel, to the alchemist, if you consider the Shepard as H H. Is that, i am the only one, who thinks, winner stands alone is exactly opposite to the Alchemist and other novels?

  • Actually, i Loved not liked this comment :$

  • I agree with you, dear Paulo Coelho. A book is a piece of art. When you put the last word, it is the end. Then we, the readers, live in our fantasy the life of the heroes, contemplate and live in the atmosphere of the 'time and space'.. After that there are the …. 'ifs', the different possibilities that might have driven our heroes to different Paths.. But then this is … another story.
Since the writer has moved into time and space and became wiser, then I do not see the need of repeating or continuing a story.. The message of the book has been sent. From the aspect of the poet, I think a poet's mind is a creative mind and whatever needs to be said it will become LOGOS and take the form of a new book, a new Cosmos, that we, readers, will have the curiosity and pleasure to discover. To see the author's soul once again.
Last week I read in a magazine an article “The Winner's Formula”.It impressed me because it says: Armed with the right attitude, winners are invariably keen to learn, acquiring substantial knowledge through reading. While not all readers are leaders, you will find that all leaders are readers. “You are the same person today that you will be in five years' time except for the books you read and the people you meet” By expanding your knowledge you will be exposed to new ideas and new Worlds.

Repetition is the mother of knowledge, but creating new Ideas is evolution.
    LOVE,
    Thelma.

I tend only to do/see things once… and the only film sequel that I can say was an improvement on the original (with David Niven), was “The Return of the Pink Panther” starring Peter Sellars… I laugh every single time until my sides hurt ;)

Hi lady with the green hair…;) you are quite right… St. James awaits you… you already posses the shell… ;)

    Love, Paul

  • i feel that the story continued with me.

  • Oh this is always the big question. It's like in movies.Sometimes it's better to leave something as unique, the essence in it is unique.Doing a second part can simply denature the beauty of the first part which was a success.Besides,it leaves to the readers the freedom to use their imagination.Rare are the ones who have done a second part at the level of the first.Unless,it was planned from the start like a trilogy or something. And I think it's a lot of pressure as well. Some books like movies are unique and do not need a second part. That's what I think. But it's a challenge though,to the ones who really feels something still needs to be told. But again,a writer writes first for him, like you said, and not to please others. It goes along for everything else.
    Have a nice day

  • Yes, I agree with you Mr. Coelho, The Alchemist wouldn't really make sense with a sequel… The Alchemist is The Alchemist… there can not be another Alchemist…

    C.

  • Hmmm. Thats you. But I also love open ending books.
And you said you wrote a trilogy.Yes yes, about how destiny changed in few days, that happened in some of your novels. I remember your words in the preface of I guess “The Devil and Miss Prym”. Anyways good job, lovely interesting novels, all.
    Love
