Learning to take care of oneself

Paulo Coelho

- For years I have sought enlightenment – said the disciple. – I feel I am near it and want to know how to take the next step.

- A man who knows how to seek God knows also how to take care of himself. How do you support yourself? – asked the master.

- That is just a detail. I have rich parents who help me along my spiritual path. Because of that, I can dedicate myself entirely to sacred things.

- Very well – said the master. – I will explain to you the next step: look at the sun for half a minute.

The disciple obeyed.

When he had finished, the master asked him describe the landscape around him.

- I can’t. The sun’s brightness dazzled my eyes.

- A man who looks fixedly at the sun ends up blind. A man who only looks for Light, and shifts his responsibilities onto the shoulders of others, never finds what he is seeking – was the master’s comment.

  • Seeking enlightenment is one of my life goals. Athother goal is to enjoy what has been provided to me. Recently, I was given some knowledge from outside of myself. It is this.

“You are not G-d. Many of your thoughts are as if you think you are G-d. Retreat from these thoughts. Live the wise/good life as best you can and relax with what ever happens. Many things you have thought in the past were evil you can now see were a blessing. Why did you make this error? Because you ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Stop eating from that tree. You are not G-d. You need to teach this to others that they are not G-d.”

  • To live life 'alive', but never 'loosing sight' of the Light!

To use the divine Gift of Thought wisely, but live in the material world with our full potentials and responsibility because every minute is a … creative minute. Creation takes place in our minds preparing our … Hells or Paradises. May Love govern all our … thoughts and .. acts.
    LOVE,
    Thelma.

  • Hi Aditya,

Great system. It reminds me of Lawrence Kohlberg's 6 stages of Moral development, which takes human beings from being self centered young children.. to mature, older individuals, who is able to feel empathy for others, fulfilling their life by dedicating themselves to improving the conditions of humanity. According to Kohlberg, some people don't develop past the first stages, and therefore are unhappy in life. As examples of human beings who reached the 6th stage, he suggests Ghandi, Moder Theresa, Martin Luther King and many more.

  • AA members say “Careful of the pink cloud” … What I realize is that more and more I develop my relation with the Source, more and more the responsibility increases, meaning being conscious of what is happening in the present moment, being in a “light mode”. Finding God when I was lost gave me power. But then, what drove me to those problems (alcoolism, toxicomany, agoraphobia, anxiety, fears), I had to find out because I now understood that God is not just a remedy that take that the problem away … yes, he helped but I had to do my share. He assured me of His presence, the gift of faith, and was always there for me through people, books, music, prayers, writing, but I had to pass in action mode, search, live my emotions, become more and more responsible of them, of expressing them, of letting them pass. And I had to become responsible for my dreams. I am the driver of the car, the car is my body and God my essence … I cannot push the car and drive at the same time, and I do not want anybody to drive it while I push, and I do not want to be dependant of somebody else to push it … God respects my rhythm, knows my limits of the moment, and gives what I have to receive today.

  • you know Paulo.. if every parent were to tell the next generation stories like these here, i think – well, it would be good ;o)

  • :) why do we seek God ? Is she/he not within us? In every deed we do, in our thoughts, our simple gestures and the way we live our life ?

  • Yes when you are not responsible for yourself …being in a rich environment may end up blind.

Responsibility is traveling into yourself and visit the dark places where you hide yourself…then richness becomes the light out of the blindness given by your ego.

    Thank you Paulo.

  • so true !

in Geeta, lord says that one must first and foremost take care of one's resposibilities, duties as ordered by 'dharma' dharma is not releigion, it means religiousness !

in ancient, vedic india, people were expected to folow a four step path in life.
    1. Upto age of 25 years – to be a student, pursuing knowledge while shunning away from 'sins'.

    2. 25-50 years : marry, enter the 'real' world of sins and virtues, enjoy and expereince life fully, maintain a remote contcat with matters spiritual.

    3. 50-75 years : now your kids are comming back from stage 1, you become “vanprashtha” still in the world but facing forests, devote more time to matters spiritual. let world affairs be handled by the younger ge, you be there to advise and help when asked.

    4. 75-100 years : now u move to forests, with your wife and grandchildren of society, people who are now comming to stage 1. impart your 'lknowledge' to them and now u are full time sanyashi.

    cool system no.
