To be fair, he didn’t know much about Igor except Igor is a successful businessman. He didn’t know that Igor is veteran war and have killed innocent people before. He thoughts Igor is a rational man because he (Igor) able to prosper his business like him (you cannot prosper your business unless you are rational).

Hamid-He is his own person. He puts his creativity to work and not afraid to break from tradition either from family or culture. Built his design company from love, respect, and intelligence. He is not so lucky when it comes to romantic love though. He treats the woman he loves very well but Ewa does not notice it. Hamid’s nature was more balanced.

Great example, he seemed a perfect man…but he could try to talk and listen more to Ewa. A brave straight man, with talent, hard worker, respecting traditions, loving his country, loving and dying for the woman he loved. A man of success with almost no fawl.
I loved Hamid.
Would be my favourite character.

Namaste Sr. Coelho,
Hamid is an innovator. He’s honorable and expects those around him to be the same. His relationship with Ewa was his Achilles heel. Lack of honesty between them was disastrous, to say the least. For him, I sighed as I read his fate.

hamid was the most deserving one for success, and the one more close to grasp true success, if had not been killed. i think, he was the best world that Igor destroyed.

Hamid somewhat remains a mystery to me . Although he giving it his all when it comes to love ; a part of him reserved . Part of his remains untouched although he has experienced so much to get where he is .

When I was in high school the most hated question from my literature profesor was :
What the Writer thought while writing this or that?
At that time I was 16 – 18 years old and how could I know what James Joyce, Filding, Moravia, Kafka, Zola, Dreiser or Dostojevski thought, just to name some of obligatory writers.

I am so glad I grasped your Igor’s character, and thank you once again for letting me know. This direct interaction is excelent.

Hamid:

Man of integrity, inteligence and emotions. Strong person who follow his dreams choosing less travelled road, ready to change and reinvent along the road of his life.

On that road he found love of his life, Ewa might not be the best but still is the love that he cherishies until his death.

For me he is real and only Winner in this book and his death is just part of it and of his noble character.

I understand that Paulo decides the fate of each of his characters, but I also believe that characters are based and built up around a person ..and as people we manifest all that happens to us in our lives…so what I am looking for is what was it in the character of Hamid that manifested first of all his relationship with Ewa and then his death by Igor.

Angela, true… though this is fate! there are lots of things all characters should have or should not have done, things they did and didn’t do, but Paulo chose their fate by the choices he made for them. And thus they came to their fate. As how life is!

Hi Paulo..I think Hamid is my favourite character. I love his background and how he has arrived where he is. He is strong and kind….I wondered was there part of you in him. Why would a man like him allow himself to be used by Ewa. He died trying to do the correct thing….I wish he had walked away…….with love..

Hamid is a warm loving caring man who also happens to be sussessful. But he has humility and is grateful to those who have made his success possible.
I like Hamid. He never takes anybody for granted.
When it comes to Igor: Hamid has a flaw : Like any other man he doesn’t like challenges for a beautiful woman. His pride convince him that he can reason with Igor.

I am in the middle of the book.there are lots of things in my mind ,so I would like to write it down .I thiink Mr Coelho inspired “Hamid” from Elie Saab,who is a Lebanese fashion designer .He has began his job in Beirut when he was 18.”Saab is self-trained. He started sewing as a child and knew that one day he would make a living out of it. In 1981 he moved to Paris to study fashion, but ended up returning and opening his workshop in 1982. In 1997 Saab was the first non-Italian designer to become a member of the Italian Camera Nazionale della Moda, and in 1997, showed his first collection outside Lebanon in Rome. In 1998, he started ready-to-wear in Milan, and in the same year, he held a fashion show in Monaco which was attended by Princess Stéphanie of Monaco. He became an overnight success after he became the first Lebanese designer to dress an Oscar winner, Halle Berry, in 2002. He is calm ,handsome,cute and he has silver hair,very nice smile and deep sight.But Sheikh looks like Dubai or UAE sheikh who has a big dream for his country.Good and hardwork people in mid-east look like Hamid,But most of them are not as successful as him .

Hamid made an interesting comment on page 97.

He had a vision.Obviously had beeen mulling over it for a while.
It is good to see that aspect from the other side of the world.Thank you Paulo.

When the Sheik asked him:
“What do you want to do?”
“I want to sell haute-couture”
“I’m convinced that fashion would be one way of breaking down the prejudices the rest of the world has about us. If they could be made to see that we don’t dress like barbarians they would find it easier to accept us.”

this was followed by quite an insightful (to me)”murmurings” from the court.

“Was he talking about clothes?
That was something foreigners , who were more concerned with how people looked on the outside than what they were inside.”
