This book ,has been there around for quite some time( and will obviously stay there) and it is one of the most widely read ,translated to umpteen number of languages round the world, and even catagorised as a modern classic.
Well, the author Paulo coelho, from Brazil, would sure not have imagined that his book would become such a super seller transcending all the norms , albeit the Potter series,to become numero uno in the literary world of fiction and fantasy.
Somebody recommended me the book, and I could easly purchase one from the book shop next door, for 250 bucks, (no discounts pl, it is a bestseller!!), and thereafter was (un)fortunate to download it free from the net, in pdf format, which I could easly convert into azw format for my kindle ebook reader.
I had read the first few chapters from the paperback, and thereafter, I read the downloaded version at the convenience of my office on my kindle.
The book starts with the musings of the sheperd boy(santiago), who is the hero and ends up with the same character rushing his way home with all meterial achievements one could seek in terra firma.
The author is careful while introducing new characters in the book, and the readers feel quite adaptive,as only one is introduced at a time, (As the author himself confirms elsewhere in the book of this style which iis palatable to all bookworms!) Unfortunately, he was blunt and brutal while introducing the Englishman, who accompanies the hero (the boy) to the deserts. This character, has no major role in the book, but to relate the subject of alchemy the core theme of the book. Till then the book speaks nothing of alchemy as the reader would wonder , but sooner he is dragged into the whirlpool , and the real alchemist enters the scene on the stallion with a falcon on his shoulders.
The book deals with the forces driving the life on earth, its origin, its nuances, its diversities, and ofcourse the meterialistic realities which are really immeterial, when compared to the serene sublime power of will, but guided by the omens (good omens!!!).The author depicts the success story of his subject, an ordinary sheperd boy, who could control the forces of nature with his sheer will power, and the author confirms that anybody could do the same provided he has the right will and the right direction and GOD shall provide the omens which has to be deciphered and decoded to reach the destiny. One may feel the book has a hue of relegion, which is obvious, and the message conveyed is more important, that success is for those who chase their dreams, their ambitions, and rightly guided by the omens, and change is eterenal, (The old saying rolling stone gathers no moss is slain by the new catch words, stagnant water stinks!!) so move, move leave apart your routine monotony, find new avenues hone your skills for reaching your destiny guided by your dreams,
one need not wonder and expect to find the secret formula to turn lead into gold by reading this book, as the author never intended to convey such a thing by this book, on the other hand he wishes to convey the greatest sublime thoughts of wisdom, which men oft fail to realise, that is , the elixir of life and the philosophers stone, or the pebbles Urim and Thummim are nothing but the same wisdom lying concealed in oneself, only to be surfaced by kindling the light within, It could be the same kundalini , prophessed by our Yogis, which lies in a serpentine coil down your spinal chord, only to be vitalised by continuous hard work.
The most important message conveyed by this book , is that one can control the forces of nature only if he understands its language, and to understand that language, one has to be a keen observer, an avid listener, and of fecund imagination, and ye shall discover the truth, hidden just inside you, you shall realise the power within you, you shall tread the most difficult paths and reach your destiny., as every one of us is bestowed with a destiny, waiting to be unveiled,
The book is plain to read and any ordinary reader with a limited vocabulary can understand the same. The author has been careful in avoiding high sounding words baffling the reader which is welcome. (thanks to the translator!!!)The chain of events also is continuous, and the reader is forced to complete the book in one go.
The term alchemy assumes importance as the author tries to convey that any form of matter is but meant to serve a definite purpose in this world, including organic or inorganic, animate or inanimate (as we perceive) so, to change something to another form purely for meterial gains, may be against nature, which should be challenging the very existance of life on earth.
There are no negative comments about this book, as I feel it is still to be explored to uncover more hidden treasures within ., this masterpiece.

PAz profunda.
This was one of the best books i ever read i loved the way in which Mr.Coelho has presented the book it speaks alot about philosophical things but in the midst of a fiction story. This book encouraged me to read Mr.Coelho’s more works and i must say with every new book i read deeper did i fall in love with his writings! Thank you Mr.Coelho i would love to meet you someday.
Agradeço-lhe imenso, e despeço-me desejando-lhe muita saúde, bem-estar e inspiração…
Obrigado
Recently read the book ‘The Alchemist’, liked it immensly, the character motivated me to follow my own dream. Still one question remained, What did the shepheard do once the returned to Fatima with his treasure? Did he settle in one place with her, I’m curious because he is of such a vagabond nature, it seems difficult for him to settle at one place for a lifetime. Life without adventure? Is finding the treasure the end of it.
Sachin,
I think in going back to Fatima, he will fulfill both dreams. He will be going back to his soul mate and keep on discovering the depths of love; but, because she is a “desert woman” and expects her husband to roam, he will be able to fulfill his “vagabond nature” as you say, if and when he desires more adventure. True lovers support each other and encouurage the other to grow and realize new dreams or adventures.

The book that made me fall in love with Paulo Coelho!! Thank you for all the work you do and for sharing it with us.
I always believe that the universe will really conspire if we will continue to have the dream in mind and the will to achieve it, I think I’ll hit my Personal Legend soon. I am very much delighted to read your book for the first time and did it just for a day, as I became excited to read from page to page. I now started reading another book of yours, eleven minutes.
“El Alquimista” was the first book of yours I read/translated (into English). It was enchanting! I loved the “Realismo Magico” throughout your book. We need to be reminded that it is very important to follow our dreams, even have we have to go to the other side of the Earth to do realize it:) Thank you for all of your wonderful books. I translate Spanish novels into English to stay in practice, as I am a senior college undergrad with Spanish as my major. Your books are a real blessing:) Keep up the good work. I anxiously await your next publication:)
Life is explained in a simple way. This is the reality of how good we are in listening our heart, how good we are in reading the massages of life (coming to us as signs),and how good we are in beliving in ourselfs and in our dreams. Than everything just conects to eachother and make us smile.
I love this book.
Bendiciones.
dear sir,
tis was the second book i read …i dont know whether it’s too much of a cliche but i happend to read tis in a much needed time of my life.My course study is gng to be completed in a yr and i wanted an inspiration to follow my dream as i had not whn i tuk up wht i’m studyin now.after reading … some lines abruptly stopd my thinkin and helped me to motivate myself in following my dream… and i wanted to share it wid ma frnds.. and i started msgin lines from ya buk…to my surprise ..few of them already knew it….
Your concern for ur readers is something that i see different too..
hope to see ya soon in india …
hello sir…what a book…! I have just completed reading “The Alchemist”…its a terrific journey to the pyramids and now i feel oneness with the soul of the universe…I am not saying it in a hangover kick of just completing it..some of the ideas in the book..are already been practicing by me through the years.and heart fully i want to give you a few compliments on the book..one day i am sure you will be the warrior son of a good man for saying the line “if you want to achieve something, the universe conspires in favor of you..” and you will be rabbi for writing The Alchemist…But one point is there to ask you…when the boy feels oneness with the HAND THAT WROTE ALL ..and he was able to transform himself into the wind…that should be the climax of the story, since he reached the ultimate position in the nature at that point of time..and nothing like impossible exists to him on or above the universe…at least i feel so….but you continued the story as if he was an ordinary boy…thats the point i dont understand..but anyway the end is very nice and surprising..no better ending can be there in that context you follow up the story after the wind episode…and epilogue is also very beautiful.. and one more hats off for writing such a book…

sometimes it’s unbelievable that someone exists/existed.u belong to that category. like anyone else,i was also fed up,reading the hopeless accounts of unreal life, questioning intellect, puzzling existence. alchemist stands out for so many reasons, but the one everybody can tell u,is that it satisfies the child within every person,it brings back the memories of grandmothers, patting ur head n telling u the stories that fostered confidence.is there a single word that is not understandable? as simple as hearing a lullaby,to forget the pains of the day.. each can identify herself with santiago, with the same pleasure seeing the mirror being an infant. it offers a guardian whenever u r puzzled…
i read the story in malayalam first, means its the third language to b translated from the original, stil, having in mind someone said, ‘poetry is what that loses being translated’,i wonder how wonderful it will b to read the original.. kudos to those who cud do so
also wonder how can one bear the pressures of expectations of such large masses..
From the novel The devil and Miss Prym By beloved Paulo (always adore him :) ] , “The wager should be fairer. If after 3 days, no one is murdered the village should get the 10 gold bars any way. As a reward for the integerity of its inhibitants.
the stranger laughed
And I will recieve my gold bar as a reward for my participation in this so did game. ”
stranger agreed.
In another part of this novel beloved Paulo writes
“The devil laughs and replies: Well job does after all have everything, so why wouldnt he worship God and make sacrifises? take away the good You gave him and see if he worship You. Then God accepts the challenge ………………………….. Then after great sufferig, Job rebels and blasphemes against the Lord. Only then does God restore to him that which he had taken away. ”
Whenever i goes through this i hav had a question in my mind that ” If Miss Prym doesnt know that she is going to get a reward. Then how suppose to the story goes…. ”

10 years ago, a toastmaster inspired by The Alchemist regularly sent email newsletters with inspiring quotes taken from the book, The Alchemist. It led me to search for the book. I was inspired and has introduced it to many of my friends, including my daughter. Thank you so much Paulo Coelho for your wonderful gift of wisdom and inspiration.
When I first read the book, I could relate straightaway to the boy with his dreams, as I had done that so often to achieve what I wanted in the different stages of my life. And, I have always felt that whenever I dreamt of or wanted something I always somehow managed to get what I wanted – exactly like the story’s “all the universe conspires to help you to achieve it.” The other interesting part of the story was the omens – somehow it changed my perception about omens i.e. it is not necessarily evil as in the movie. However, the rest of the story seemed a ‘blur’ to me then – lost between a magical fable and wisdom in reality.
This week, I came across the book at my daughter’s home during my holiday break, and I re-read the book. I must say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the book again, as if it is “Maktub” that I would cross path with the book once again to be agape.
This second time round, because of my recent conversion to the Catholic faith, I realized that the character, Melchizedek – the King of Salem, is actually from the Old Testament. And, it was very cleverly weaved into the fable.
What I also like about the book again, is that there are little stories within such as the wise man with the oil on the spoon, and the one sbout dreams told by the Alchemist towards the end. The latter story is actually from the new testament – regarding the Roman Centurion who sought Jesus to heal his servant. But, the story is narrated so well that one just grasp the message immediately.
I can also see that the author is ecumenistic who is receptive of all religions.
My salute and tribute to you, Paulo Coelho. Thank You
The book that changed my life for ever!!!Still after all these years my personal favourite and a book i can recommend over and over again.Thank you Paulo Coelho for The Alchemist :)))
follow our personal legend….it gives a man,a woman the chance to live for what they came for in this planet…there is one way,THE way, through which you give your best self to life, you give all your love, all you have to Him…by living your life simply by choosing your personal legend…we all know which way it is and if we find ourselves one day in the middle of another road,we’ll always know why….something’s missing….
I loved this story. I was drawn in by the style of the narrative. It felt as though I were reading a fable. I highlighted so many sentences. There were so many wisdom rich morals to take from the various plot twists and turns. I hated to see it end. I immediately went out and purchased all the other books Coelho had written. I love the way Paulo writes. His words are the music that my heart can dance to over and over again.
Its been a week since I have finished this book and its slowly teaching me new things. Unknowingly im applying some different techniques in my work.My dreams have got a frame work now.Im regaining the confidence I had lost. Thank you for giving this book as a gift.
I was gifted “The Alchemist” and it is a truly inspired classic, which I feel every being should read. I love how the main character didn’t have a name or an identity, aside from being the shepherd. That aspect made wrapping in his skin easier. I have been inspired and agree with the premise, that we can not ignore our hearts nor our destiny, without sacrificing our humanity. I really really love this book.
I just finished reading The Alchemist. Truly an amazing book that inspired many thoughts and feelings tI have discounted as foolishness. Being Native American, I could related to much of the symbolism related to nature and spirituality. I am intrigued by knowing that the author is Catholic and his insights about organized religion are thoughts and feelings I’ve had, yet have not explored further out of a duty to my religion. I am interesting in reading The Pilgrim next!

The structure of the story is definitely different then many other books. I think that the somewhat narrative quality the story takes helps focus the reader on the fact that the story is a fable. The Alchemist’s story structure is different, and I think that one of the indicators of this is the fact that there is very little normal character development. The main point of the story is not supposed to be the main character Santiago, but the underlying message of personal legend.
Well, I am a junior in college and I read your book a couple of months ago and could not put it down. I do not do much reading nor do I usually put the time into it. I absolutely love your style of writing. Many times, especially in college, everyone likes to use big words and long analogies to describe basic things. I really felt inspired to truly go for my dreams. The story was so simple that anyone could understand it, yet the message was so powerful! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone! I am forever grateful. Thank-you.
Hi,
Name is Ada from Istanbul, Turkey. I read the Alchemist (Simyaci in Turkish) more than 5 times in several years of my last 13 ages. First two times were very close like one month. It is now enough to thank you forever for this book. Cause it changed my view abou life.
I can now realize and get the things while I am carrying the spoon.
I was so lucky to shake hands with you in an exhibition in Istanbul also I had your signature for my Turkish copy of the Alcemist. But unfortunately, – without thinking a while- I presented it to a young boy who loves you and has phsyical disabilities.
I hope you will visit Turkey again and I hope I will have the chance of having a new signatured copy of the Alchemist.
Thanks again for this amazing book.
By the way I read the rest of your books. But still The Alchemist is my number one.
I thought it was an interesting choice to open up the story with the adaptation of the Narcissus story. This adaptation personifies the lake; the lake weeps for Narcissus because Narcissus notices the water. The prologue emphasizes that the simple act of awareness leads to happiness, which is a theme that is carried throughout the book. It occurs in the King’s story about the boy and his spoon of oil. It is important not just to complete a task, the “marvels of the world” must be noticed as well (32). This story helps Santiago remember to recognize the omens that are along his path to his personal legend. The omens help guide him, protect him, and ensure his happiness.
Brida.
My story with you started a day of February 2008… when the Man of my heart, of my life, suggested me to read the Alchemist.
I read it; 2 days and I was through. I enjoyed it so much; it is a mix of what I loved in childhood, a good story telling but at the same time its so profound and enriching. An amazing book explaining why that many people read it! I appreciated each single page and I am soon to re-read it but this time in my native language: French.
My Mum was not satisfied and said I should also read the Fifth Mountain. I did read it. She thought I will be bored after 5 pages but I finished the whole book in 2 days. What it taught me is good; never give up. I also liked this book much, it is awe-inspiring.
Meanwhile I’ve read ‘Conversations with Paulo Coehlo’ written by Arias and I enjoyed to know and understand what you have been throughout all your life. I guessed while reading the 2 previous books that writing was your therapy and that most of the time it was life experiences put down on paper… It is so close to reality, so down to Earth that I understood somebody must have lived those situations before, indeed you were The One.
Then later on, Mum came back to me and told me to end my cliches on sex, prostitution and all those taboos by reading 11 minutes. AMAZING! three days it was finished… I had to know the end :)
I simply loved this book. I believe its among the best book I have ever read and I am now advising it to everyone around. More sales to come :))) My people need to feel the goodness of this book.
I started then Veronika decide de mourir; very hard for me who does not like needles, injection (who does????!!!) and who was a recent witness of my Grandfather’s agony being shot with tranquilisants each single minute he was disturbing. This remains me this horrible and very hostile hospitals’ environment and also how I hated the bad treatment they give to people including my beloved late Grandpa.
The end and the moral of this book are as usual amazingly good. I enjoyed it much and in a day I was done reading it.
I am now into the Zahir and I, so far, am having some difficulties to read it as fast as the other… this story is fascinating therefore it will take me longer.
All in all, Paulo, you are an amazing writer as well as great person. What I’ve learned through my readings so far is non valuable. Reading your lines everyday cheers me up and cool me down. It also motivates me to work on my thesis, sitting and writing as you often do.
Keep Going, all have been excellent readings and I am glad my Man put one of your writing on my path because you see, 2 years later I am still on it and enjoying it MUCH!
Thank you so much,
I am definitely going to read them all and looking forward for new ones.
Take Care of yourself,
I Love the way the book is written, eventhough it’s written in 3rd person, you can connect with the character (Santiago) and feel every emotion he did. It shows that every one has a personal legend and how sometimes we forget about it (although we know we have to find it). this is one of my favorite books ever!!!!
The structure is perfect, everything is where it should be. I think that it is interesting that you don’t believe in too much pain, and after pain comes a reward. In life people many times do not see the reward after pain and continue their suffering – plus that thay think that all other people should be alike.
Actually, I have felt it is mere a glance to the reality of life in the midst of desires and frustrations. And peoples have to seek out their own treasure where they at now. That may be the pilosophy of the story what we, the readers have to know beyond the magical craftiness of narration of COELHO!
A minha opinião…
TENGO CASI TODOS SUS LIBROS…MIS FELICITACIONES… …SIMPLEMENTE ES UNA GRAN ENSEÑANZA , …REFLEXION Y APLENDIZAJE…

Dear Paulo,
I always believe that the universe will really conspire if we will continue to have the dream in mind and the will to achieve it, I think I’ll hit my Personal Legend soon. I am very much delighted to read your book for the first time and did it just for a day, as I became excited to read from page to page. I now started reading another book of yours, eleven minutes.
Thank you and more power.
Paulo,
“El Alquimista” was the first book of yours I read/translated (into English).

This was the first book I read by you and I fell in love with your writing. I have read all the books I can find written by you.
Thank you for such wonderful literature among a sea of commercial writers.

Alchemist is my favourite book. It inspired me to white my first book: Dare to Take the next Step – Adventures of a Refugee
Great novel… My favorite book ever. I have learned new things about life, and I feel changed after reading… And plus, story is very very great. Wow!
hello sir…what a book…!

I am pradeep rawat 23 male, i love reading your books they take me to some lonely place where u r at peace. I belong to the great himalayas and the same peace i can find in ur books as being in my place. Thank u sir for writing such great books giving directions.
sometimes it’s unbelievable that someone exists/existed.u belong to that category. like anyone else,i was also fed up,reading the hopeless accounts of unreal life, questioning intellect, puzzling existence. alchemist stands out for so many reasons, but the one everybody can tell u,is that it satisfies the child within every person,it brings back the memories of grandmothers, patting ur head n telling u the stories that fostered confidence.is there a single word that is not understandable? as simple as hearing a lullaby,to forget the pains of the day.. each can identify herself with santiago, with the same pleasure seeing the mirror being an infant. it offers a guardian whenever u r puzzled…
i read the story in malayalam first, means its the third language to b translated from the original, stil, having in mind someone said, ‘poetry is what that loses being translated’,i wonder how wonderful it will b to read the original.. kudos to those who cud do so
also wonder how can one bear the pressures of expectations of such large masses..
Love and light

One of my most favorite books. Made me an optimist when I read it for the first time. Nothing’s impossible as long as you want.
Thank you.
follow our personal legend….it gives a man,a woman the chance to live for what they came for in this planet…there is one way,THE way, through which you give your best self to life, you give all your love, all you have to Him…by living your life simply by choosing your personal legend…we all know which way it is and if we find ourselves one day in the middle of another road,we’ll always know why….something’s missing….
AXEI MTO BOM ESSE SEU LIVRO FOI D +.
There is nothing impossible,right :)
:)
Regards
I thought it was an interesting choice to open up the story with the adaptation of the Narcissus story. This adaptation personifies the lake; the lake weeps for Narcissus because Narcissus notices the water. The prologue emphasizes that the simple act of awareness leads to happiness, which is a theme that is carried throughout the book. It occurs in the King’s story about the boy and his spoon of oil. It is important not just to complete a task, the “marvels of the world” must be noticed as well (32). This story helps Santiago remember to recognize the omens that are along his path to his personal legend. The omens help guide him, protect him, and ensure his happiness.
the alchemist is the greatest book ever i love it and paulo coelho you are a legend
Brida.

Mister Coehlo,
My story with you started a day of February 2008… when the Man of my heart, of my life, suggested me to read the Alchemist.
Take Care of yourself,
L.A.C.
