Patience and Speed

Paulo Coelho

A Warrior of Light needs patience and speed at the same time.

The two biggest mistakes of a strategy are to act prematurely and to let the opportunity pass by. To avoid making these mistakes, the warrior copes with each situation as if it were unique, and applies no formulas, prescriptions or the opinions of others.

Caliph Moauiyat asked Omar Ben Al-Aas what was the secret of his great political skill: “I have never gotten involved in any matter without first studying the way out; on the other hand, I have never become involved and wanted to get out right away,” was his answer.

  • Dear Paulo,

Is it possible to help us out again with magic? We would be very grateful.

  • Patience et vitesse…mon casse-tête chinois ! Je dois souvent me freiner. J’ai au moins compris une chose ! Qu’analyser une situation pour en comprendre les différentes voies possibles ne veut pas dire passer à l’action rapidement…c’est dur pour mon tempérament mais j’apprends à composer par petites touches…comme en peinture ! J’y arriverais…!

  • Don’t despair, there is no last love.
For each and every love of yours give everything you have.
just don’t poison your heart with lies.
And don’t despair, there is no last love.

  • This is so wise and clever. Speed and patience, kind of a paradox together?! Finding the balance is a fine art and takes real effort. Thelma you should be good at this… balance ;) I can relate this to my writing. Sometimes when I get writers block, I can’t bring myself to write and so I just sit and wait and the more I wait the more blocked I become. Coming here on the blog and reading Paulo’s words and everyone’s comments help me to jump start. But my point is yes this is important in my writing, and in situations in life, although it takes skill, and the more we practice it the more we hone that skill. Paulo you’re on a paradox roll! ;)

  • One word “NOW” cancels two other words:Patience,Speed.

  • When I first read this today I just smiled.. I remembered a friend of mine we used to go together to concerts and theaters. After the big earthquake in 1999 we had in Limassol she was so frightened and obsessed, that whenever we had to go to a concert she used to check where the EXIT signs were!! ;-]

RUN SLOWLY =Σπεύδε βραδέως, is another wise Greek quote!! You see dearest Annie, our ancestors have put their wisdom in just two words!

    • It seems that today i should remember for some reason (i still havent discovered it!) that i should ..run slowly! (Σπευδε βραδεως)..Today all the Universe cries out loud to me this phrase!
Paulo mentions it with this patience and speed post, then you mention it, a stranger in the bus today mentioned it…there is something that i should get..but i dont ..
Maybe i lack of patience, (yes, i think that i do)or i misjudge situations, and i should learn when to wait and when to grap the opportunity..

    • Run slowly ??

hope humanity listens to this before they finish this whole human expereiment with their obsession for speed. going faster and faster but to where, no one seems to know. let’s stop celebrating those countries which acive double digit gowths, let’s penalise countries which are persuing 7-8 % economic gowth, let those countries which are using energy more than global average, reduce their consumption e.g just have load shedding in new york from 8-10 PM everyday, let people once agin discover the joys of living without electricity. let’s look at this mad rush and stop for a while catch our breaths.

annie – impatience is a problem not only with you but with 99 % of us now a days, fast food, fast life, no one seems to have any time. the excerise suggested by paulo, looking at a blank wall or better still looking at a candle light for 10-15 minutes a day, can do wonders for improving one’s pateince, and yes after those 10 – 15 minutes of staring one can just spend another 2-3 minutes with closed eyes, not thinking about anything, just being with one self and one’s god!

  • These words seem particularly poignant for me today. (Synchronicity, again!) Just yesterday I won a battle, but this is only one battle within the context of a much larger struggle. The winning of this battle also has its consequences: now, timing is everything. From this point on, I am locked into a time-frame – I have precisely 63 days to successfully complete all of the other tasks that will make my dream a reality. Of course I am excited by this victory, and now I want everything to happen today! But this cannot be. If I act prematurely, the whole thing may fall apart. PATIENCE IS NECESSARY. But similarly, if I act too slowly, time will run out – it will be too late. SPEED IS ESSENTIAL. Finding the balance between these two – between patience and speed – is crucial in this moment.

At the same time, there is a “way out” of the whole thing. I know this because I studied the fine print before ever signing my name on the dotted line. The thing is, I don’t want out, and I don’t expect that I will want out anytime soon.

    • I m so happy for your (mini)victory..you did it!! this smaller thing is an indication that you can do win the bigger part too, and frankly I m sure you will
You have all my best wishes, dearest Savita

  • Yes. To continue my thoughts on the domestic violence situation. What should a battered women do? It’s often recommended they make an action plan. First step to help them is to give them a telephone number to a shelter where they can get help, and make them list down their own significant family and friends, where they can go for help. The woman herself has to plan what to bring with her, if she has to rush out of the home, to avoid getting hurt. She would need her ID’s, her children ID’s, any birth certificates and important documents. Does she have a cell phone? If not, make sure to hook her up with one. Often, changes means we have to save up some money. How much money do we need to move to a different location? All these things needs to be considered, and planned, and at the same time make a judgment about how dangerous the situation is. If one feel life is threatened, it takes a different exit strategy, than if this is not the case. To split from a relationship, is very, very dramatic most of the times. Most divorced people get to see sides of their partners they never thought could be there. So, yes balance between patience and speed, to make the best way to a new path.

    • I totally agree with that. And then, once she is secured, I believe that she need to undercover why she got in that relationship, meaning what emanates from her, her responsibility so to not fall under that same energy, influence … attraction and system need to be demystified. Affection, Jojo.

  • Thank you for sharing those thoughts. For me, it is clear that to act accordingly, to capture the moment, is to be conscious of my forces and also my weaknesses, those will help me direct my attention. And most of all, it is important for me to chose the battle or I prefer determine with my spirit and soul my purpose of this life for me at the time being and in the present environment. Since everything evolves, my mission, my environment, etc, may also evolve. Not to forget why me I am here and the different stages that I personally have to travel through to acquire skills, liberty and creativity. For me, to develop communication and relation with God and it’s Celest Army, or Celest Family, is a priority in which I have to discipline myself to be in accordance with my soul’s journey. Spontaneity is important so to seize the moment, but without forgetting the force of the rational mind that works now in communion with my purpose of this life, that puts its force of logic, analyzing, structure to make sure that my action will have a result that is satisfying the needs of my soul. For me, being ready to participate in the Big Plan is of help if I before clean the path of my soul in the domains of love, security, recognizance, acceptance, of developing my capacity of listen with my soul, to develop affirmativity, to free my soul and then I can create. For me, part of this life was to prepare myself to be fully aware of who I am and of battling my own battle. As I did that, I grew more and more aware of what made sense for me and what position I occupy in the Big Plan, and accomplish the mission that flows. The moment I accept that mission, I enter and follow that path, making decisions that will help me accomplish it. Before receiving or pretending to go to bigger “battles”, I have to accomplish the small ones. The Bible says that if I am responsible with the little battles I will be ready for the big ones. So, the first battle for me, to recuperate power over myself and then I’m ready and solid enough, and humble enough and honest, to put the amor, take the glaive and accomplish the mission and occupy the position that was destined for me, having confidence that my colleague his doing the same, occupying his position and staying in alignment with his own purpose.
Patience and speed … patience is faith and speed is aware of the present moment and of who I truly am so to take the opportunity of the present that flows.

  • That is a middle way. So he studies the situation…means uses not only intuition. Thanks for sharing.
