I got Brida last week from Els, who is dying of cancer so that gives some load to the book it doesn’t deserve. Some people you just loath and yet have to deal with them. With Els i have had to deal for 25 years and only now that she is turning into a life skeleton can i open my heart to her, but oh well that is not the point:
the point is that there is one line in the book that really touched me. It is where Brida enccounters the voices for the first time when she has to sort out her clothes and it says that things on the outside are far more difficult to change then things on the inside.
That is so true!
God how true is that!
We all look for the ultimate love and are prepared to give our soul to our other half but all hell breaks loose if he doesn’t clean up his socks in the bathroom.
Der Teufel ist im Detail - indeed ;)

I dont want search love all my life. Its just few years of happyness, and then goes sacrifice, pain, misunderstanding, betrail. What is good in that? The man which i loved once almost destoyed me,when he just left for searching better life, better country.I cant love man the way i loved him,and i reallky dont want to…Why is so important for everyone to find the soulmate?Maybe he is not exist! So why then to be sad and depressed about this?

If there’s one thing I truly believe in, it is LOVE. I would do anything and everything to find it. But as we grow up, we realize, love isn’t all about being happy, gushy, mushy and all. The truest essence of it is Sacrifice. We may love but if ever there will come a time that we need to set the person we love the most free, even if our hearts temporarily stop due to severe pain, we have to do what we must for their happiness means more than what we feel. And that happiness may no longer include us anymore. Yet we continue to give them what they want and suffer on our own. :)

hi chris, i agree with you. im wondering if someone in relationship do not want to sacrifice and give in to one another. I’m sure if people who really love with us want and will make sacrifices for us, even though it hurts and makes him suffer all his life.
but, im thinking if brida is exists or not? i mean in her life.. i just read brida one time and actually i want to read it for the second time.. :) but, overall. i really in love with the book. what a masterpiece!! :)

Dear Mr. Coehlo,
I am now in my late 30s. It has been a problem for me to sense for my soul mate. I understand that there is a unique feeling a person would experience being with her/his soul mate. And, I think I had actually met or been with him. But, he was gone… Just like Brida and Magus, they believed or discovered they’re soulmates to each other but had to sparate ways. Why would soul mates separate ways instead of living together and enjoying the rest of their live forever… Will there be another one to come for a person who he/she thinks that a soul mate had already came only to pass.

I BELIEVE THAT ALL OF US IN THIS OR THAT WAY EXPERIENCED SOME MYSTIC THINGS HAPPEN. THE BIBLE SAYS EVERYBODY HAS HIS OWN PATH IN THIS LIFE AND HAS TO FOLLOW THIS PATH.BUT SOMETIMES ITS NOT SO EASY TO FIND THAT PATH-SOME PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT THEY NEVER DID WHAT THEY REALLY WANTED TO DO AND THE OTHERS JUST FOLLOW THEIR PATH WITHOUT EVER THINKING MUCH ABOUT IT.BRIDA IS THE ONE WHO LISTENED TO HER INNER VOICE AND SO MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE. WHO IS YOUR SOULMATE? THE ONE PREDICTED FROM ABOVE, I BELIEVE.AND YOU HAVE TO LOOK FOR HIM,TO WAIT..WHEN YOU MEET HIM YOU JUST KNOW ITS HIM.ISNT IT A MIRACLE?!

Namaste,
Brida’s the catalyst for change. She makes a wish… I want to learn magic… Of course there is something unique about her, but then there is something unique about anyone who is a catalyst for change. In truth it is herself that she changes the most, but that journey she takes shakes the foundation of those who surround her as well, as we all do when we move our personal mountains.
I noticed her name as well as being like Brid or Bridget who is both a Pagan Goddess and a Catholic Saint. Perfect. She is the Goddess of Art as well as spring… Renwal… which Brida was for Wicca and especially for the Magus.
Her vision was most interesting. I know the history of that crusade against the Cathars. “Kill them all and let God sort them out!” was the battle cry. Sad. Memories provoked by Wicca of the burning times affected me deeply as well.
Again, a strong female lead character. I read in one of your old blogs that you wouldn’t talk about why men love women because you thought you’d be considered sexist, but honestly, your female characters are all well developed independent thinkers. The hardest thing to do, in my opinion, is to write the opposite sex realistically. I am currently reading The Winner Stand Alone and all that’s left from your library for me to read after this is The Pilgrimage, so I can safely say that as a feminist who is hypersensitive to slights, your women have never struck me as demeaning in any way. In fact, I find your discussions of the Sacred Feminine to be bold and powerful for which I am grateful.
Love to you

I lived an entire life while reading Brida. the experience of reading this book has been unique in many ways… the silence I’ve experienced within me, the energy I felt floating around me, the visuals that my mind’s eye could see, the sound of the void I could hear, certain mysteries would just reveal itself… I wish I could explain in detail… but I can’t as the experience has been so mangnimusly subtle- that I am speechless. I am now going to read it for the second time for some new discoveries…Brida is with me all the time, in my bad when i travel , on my bed when I sleep, on my desk when I work. The journey has began..
Thank u sir for what U have shone light onto…

Brida, Brida..
an adventurous soul…
but maybe seeking too much.
How can she seek something with the magus and then turn back around to be with lorens. surely something was lost in that ‘turning away’.

I love and look up to Brida.
She is strong, charming, decisive and in some ways she reminds me of myself.
A lovely character that made me love the book.

Dear, Coelho!!
I bought “Brida” today.
I read 8 page including prologue until now.
I have a question.
Is Brida just imagenary person or real?
When I read a prologue, I thank a real person.
Is connected Brida story with the tradition of RAM?
Teacher and pupil.

Hi, Paulo-
I loved Brida’s story of bravery, courage, and faith. The power of choice is such an integral part of life. To commit to a path and bravely follow it to the end, without being overcome by fear and doubt, is the very essence of vitality. Thank you for helping me to arrive at this important, new awareness.
Blessings,
Carol

Brida - Her story is resonating with me deeply. While reading the beginning (I am only half way through), I kept pulling to a memory of meeting a stranger in a pub in Dublin and spending 2+ hours talking to him. In the end, he gave me his necklace - an old piece of black wood with an Ogam on it. I still have it, and I still find myself oftentimes wanting to speak to him again. That meeting, changed the course of my life in many ways, but I am only now able to see it. I hope he knows how very much I am thankful to him for sharing with me that evening. Like Brida and Magus, the time spent was enlightening, even if it was only for a short time.

I love Brida, the character, because I could identify with her quest to inquire deeply into the magical side of existence. I love to contemplate the mystery and the magic that surrounds our every breath. I was enthralled just by reading about magic. I loved the idea of a bridge between the visible and the invisible and that Wicca explained to Brida that we each in our own way have a connection to that wonderous bridge. Mystery and Magic exist in us and around us as ordinary people going about our lives, each of us in a unique way. Each of us with a unique purpose in life. I loved reading about soulmates and the characters brought life to this desire we each have to find our soulmate and the idea of how a soulmate connects us to a part of our own soul. You are truly a wonder filled person,Paulo Coelho, and it is a great journey reading your books because through your writing we get to share with you a world that lives inside of you. peace and joy, aliza

My first reading of Brida happened this year. It seem like Brida never made it to my country when it was first published but Paulo Coelho decided to re-release it, and I gladly got my copy.
I felt like I could relate to the character, Brida. She was written as a person introducing herself to magic and the unseen world. It is a stage which we all go through when we want to follow the path. Seeking information, hanging out in bookstores, and looking for the right people to talk to. It was nice to read about a female character with a strong connection to things mystical, and a desire to follow the world of signs. Brida inspires and will give certain readers the feeling that they are not alone.

Yes, very interesting choice Brida for the characters name. Bride coming from Brigid, The Exalted one, she was an Irish goddess of fire, poetry and smithcraft.
Imbolc is celebrated around February 1st. It is a celebration time of growth and renewal. Preparing the way for Spring. She was converted to a saint, St. Brigid which in Christianity is known as Ground Hog day. Some also say she was a midwife to Mary when Jesus was born.
It’s also a name for a Cheese… Bree.. coming from the sheep’s milk.

I also loved the fact that her name is Brida. I thought Brida was a celtic godess/saint?

I loved that character, and for some ways she reminds me Athena, from the Witch of Portobello. The writer, you dearest Paulo, was able to transmit the feelings, sometimes, or almost all of the times I was able to live the story. Lovely the Romantic scenes, both with Lorens, both with the Magus. Brida could be some part of me. I was so sorry when the Magus sent her to Lorens, and Brida had tears in her eyes…
Loved her courage, the night spent in the forest alone. The way she felt is same as mine, strong emotions, sensitivity.

Whilst I loved this book entirely, as an Irish woman, I feel compelled to say that the name ‘Brida O’Fern’ put a broad smile on my face.
;o)
Maybe only other irish people would appreciate the accidental (or deliberate?) unbelievablity of such a name and it’s therefore comedic value.
Or maybe the intention was to make it overtly fake sounding so as to emphasis the idea that this is a real story and the real names have been changed to fake ones?
Anyway…it is a minor point.
