Tradition of the Moon

49 Responses to “Tradition of the Moon”

  • I am currently undergoing an extreme and tumultuous spiritual journey. I have sought guidance in the wrong places, distractions of all kinds, a constant yearning and harassment by the need to find some wisdom and contentment.

This is proving difficult because I live in the public eye and am so consumed with my own drive and ambition but also my equally prevalent laziness, that I find myself often overwhelmed with a sense that I am achieving no progression.

I have been reading lots of Paulo Coelho, Terry Pratchett and other interesting modern literature such as A Million Little Pieces lately that leave me with a sense of clarity but also an even greater need to possess the wisdom I so desperately yearn for.

I would like to explore the Tradition of the Moon and I would like to do this with guidance. How do I go about finding a Magus to facilitate this growth of my soul and subsequent spiritual needs?

I thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

    My kindest regards,
    Jeff

  • I found Brida near the Spring Equinox, or Ostara, of this year. It was on Beltane that I had finished reading. It then took me until just last week to follow up that reading. I went to my local library in search of books. I did find one that I quite like, but I wonder if there are any suggestions of books and resources. Blessed be.

  • Namaste,
I see the Tradition of the Moon as a metaphor for religion in general. When we study a religion, we have more apparent structure and externally based organization to our path. It offers more defined tools for facing the Dark Night, perhaps.

I’m aware of the teachings of the Tradition separate from this metaphor, but I think it holds meaning even for those who are not interested in magic and its path… but since I see life as magic I can’t imagine anyone not interested in magic. LOL Anyway, I read this with great interest.

    Love to you

  • How an I learn the tradition of the moon?

    [Reply]

  • Brida did not stay with Magus, cuz they’re soulmates, Magus needed to learn what he learned from Brida, and vice versa, its was written, destined, she had to show him a way or say, teach him something and he needed to show her the way and teach her something, they had to meet-it was destiny, he will have her and she will have him, they didn’t part ways forever and Brida said that she will learn the Tradition of the Sun from him, and he will teach her that, and they will meet again for sure be in another birth, love is not to hold on to one person, be possessive, its about letting go, that’s what the Magus did with Wicca, and that’s what he learnt from Brida…Brida loved him, and will love him forever and she will love Lorens too, the Magus will love her back too more than anybody all the time not even knowing it in next birth maybe, but his soul will know…And may be they will meet in some other life and get married have kids evolve spiritually and be happy…Its wonderful how people realize things…It all happens so neatly, faith.God bless.

  • The Tradition of the Moon made me remember a poem about the things that veiled are more clear to us that the unhidden things, because the hallo that sorounds them, as is the case of Moon , just show to us what we need to see, maintaining the magic . Maybe I love that how it sounds, because of my Romantic nature, and we know Romantic poets writers love Moon.

Hello Alexandra! so true, I am familiar with that quote and for the life of me cannot remember it.
Yes, love the Moon, I think I am more with the Tradition of the Moon than the Sun… But I would say it varies, when the Sun is out, it’s the Sun and when the Moon is out, it’s the Moon! ;)

  • In my opinion ,The Tradition of the Sun is the way of common people. Everybody can have access on it, as Annie states above. I don’t think that it condemns fear because all of us feel it and it’s not healthy to deny it, but I think it encourages us to go on in spite of it. And to me, no doubt , it celebrates love which is the greater force that keeps us heading toward the unknown. In order to follow it it’s necessary to have faith as Paulo beautifully describes Saint John of ths Cross’ Dark Night. I also understand that if it’s the way of ordinary people it has to do with the awareness that are simple things that are worth it, that we should view the world in a simple way and humbly accept that we’re here to manifest God through our Gifts. I know it is developed through different stages which I think are the four paths mentioned in The Pilgrimage. However, it must be like that for us Christians, but there must be something similar for the the other religions because the spiritual quest is more far-reaching than religions. Furthermore, to me , many people follow it without truly realizing it, the same way many found the philosopher’s stone without having ever heard of Alchemy.

  • I believe that the Tradition of Sun and Moon are one of the different means to the same end. What I would like to post here is about the Dark Night. The way paulo coelho puts it made me realize in my Darkest moments of life, that it is not the first time that I am in Dark, I have been through it, travelled along it before and I can do that Again, Again.. and Again.. gave me the courage to proceed with my Life. Thanks, to Paulo.

The main thing with Dark Night is ‘Faith’ to lead the life and realise it. I feel to take either Tradition of Sun or Moon and continue through it one must have Faith, without it one is lost.

  • I must admit that I feel a little lost in this discussion of the two traditions, because I know nothing of either. The first time I ever heard of them was recently, in reading Brida. Even at that, I would probably have to reread the book to get it all straight in my head, as I was so completely focused in the first reading upon the subject of Soul Mates.

At any rate, I would have to say that the Magus’ path just naturally appeals to me more than the path which Wicca taught. I can understand the forest, the elements, the various aspects of nature as teachers. I think I could just sit and watch the rising and setting of the sun and moon for months, and in that simple act, gain some understanding of the Mysteries of the Universe and my own soul. And even man-made objects, various situations and circumstances that arise in daily life…(as silly as it may sound) even the furniture in my house and the way that I interact with it, this becomes a revelation. But when I think of rituals and ceremonies - all the things that seemed to be a very big part of Wicca’s tradition - I suppose I could engage in those things, but I don’t think it would come very naturally to me. I would have to work at, very hard, and still I’m not sure that I would be able to stick with it.

So which was which? I have to look back at the book, because now I’ve forgotten which was the Tradition of the Sun and which was the Tradition of the Moon - which was Wicca’s path and which was the path of the Magus?

    Carolena Sabah Reply:

Savita, I don’t really understand it clearly myself. I remember Wicca being in the Tradition of the Sun and the Magus that of the Moon.

Although I thought that at any point in ones life, a person can go through either or, depending what is suitable to them at that time. Is that so?

I am also gravitating towards the tradition of the Moon, although that of the sun seems fun sometimes. Ok, i’m just speaking out of intuition here because I do not fully comprehend the two traditions. Won’t someone enlighten us?

    Carolena Sabah Reply:

    Dear Rosa de los vientos,

Wicca is rather a Very new religion, founded just around 1940’s based on the Old Religion. The word Wicca means Knowledge yes, and is based on worship of the Moon, and why it is knowledge is because in the olden days, the Moon revealed many things, not only was time measured by the revolution of the Moon, one revolution around the earth equals a Month. Moon/Month. But also because it helped farmers know when it was the best time of the year to plant and harvest, to fish, to hunt and heal with herbs and such.

Wicca is Neo-Pagan, new pagan religion. Pagan religions are Earth or rather Nature based as in the olden days, they had the Sun and the Moon the Stars and the Skies to guide them.

    Our Calendar is based on the Moon although not very accurately. Each day of the week is based on a celestial body;
    Sunday- Sun day
    Monday - Moon day
    Tuesday- Mars
    Wednesday-Mercury
    Thursday-Jupiter
    Friday-Venus
They were named based on the seven heavenly bodies visible to the naked eye, whichever was more prominent on that day.

Why does everyone dread Mondays, Blue Mondays… well, in the olden days, Mondays was a time of going back inside the home, of cleaning, and preparing for the week and taking care of internal necessities. Nowadays it’s time to go back to work, it didn’t used to be Blue Mondays. It was rather a good day to cook, clean, regroup and such. Anyways, I’m getting sidetracked a bit.

So, that I’m aware of, but as with any Pagan belief, each has it’s own set of certain values… and so I want to know the specifics of the Tradition of the Moon and Sun that Paulo is talking about in Brida.

    Thank you!
    love,
    C.

    Hello Rosa,

I’d love to tell you more about Wicca, but I do not belong to any covenant, so I do not practice according to any specific doctrines. I am just a free soul, who believes in the Universal Power, God, Love, Goddess, everything intertwined. I follow the Earth and the plants and the Sun and the Moon. That’s pretty much it. If you know anything, I’d also like to know.
    Thank you Rosa.

  • I am also very interested in going deeper in these subject matters, reflected upon in the book. I feel more connected to the moon in general, but I agree with what was said before, that both traditions complement each other…polarities are inevitable, huh?

Looking forward to further discussion..and thanks for the initial insights!

Looking forward to discussion too, Cema! Any initiation of it will provide some answers in the end…
I think polarities ARE inevitable, because we live in the world of polarities: Sun-Moon, man-woman, day-night, good-evil, +/- and so on.
In conflict, we usually align ourselves with one of them, pointing at the other as the opposite, or even antagonistic, often jumping from one extreme into the other and back.
It takes a bit of bravery and a good will not to let ourselves be thrashed onto rocks at each side, thinking we are unable to do anything. In fact, we should just raise a bit above both of them and perceive them at the same time.
Acting that way, we always spot the safe passage in between, manage to reach the holy ground, having learned a lot in the process, because we have understood both - our reaction and the reaction of the opposite side.
I use that way to learn, by being aware of both of my own opposite sides, or me vs someone else. If we learn the lesson of the moment, we have won each battle, no matter what it looked like to the other people around.
After living and acting that way, being AWARE during such moments, we eventually adopt the fact we can benefit from all our inner adversities, and learn how to hold a team of black and white horse by the reins, to drive us further.
And, by the way, if there were not “+” and “-”, we would not have electric current, for in order to make electricity flow, we need both of them…

    [Reply]

    Hildegarde Reply:

Yes…to raise above both of them and perceive them at the same time…the sun is the moon is the sun…and their differences makes it possible to raise above both???

    Hildegarde Reply:

…and when you raise above the Traditon of the Sun and the Moon what is becoming visible then…the Tradition of the Heart?

  • On my path, I have discovered that Tradition of The Sun suits me better, because I find it being easier not to depend on rituals.
However, there are people following The Path of The Moon I am in contact with, and seek guidance when got stuck on my own path.
In my own experience, both traditions complement each other, like man and woman or Anima and Animus inside each of us…

  • Ohhh. Please share more. Bit more about RAM . I remember a quote I already copied from “The Journal of a Magus”, where Petrus explained the meanings of each letter form RAM. Was only at a second reading that I was aware of that part. I loved the explanation.I read the book not in English, so now I wont risk a bad translation of my own. Take care

  • I feel an instinctive lure to the Tradition of the Moon, and have been reading up on it over the net lately. I have a few books on Wicca, but as I also am interested in Advaita and Buddhism, I am wondering how it all “fits” - for me that is. That is only a question I can answer for myself obviously. I feel rituals, symbolism and mysticism only point to a deeper truth, a deeper understanding, a more spiritually enriching existence. Ultimate truth is indeed a “pathless path”. It is the final leap we make into the unknown.

But often, subconsciously, even in my artwork, I notice recurring themes of femininity, psychic power, otherwordliness, the Goddess (Greek and Egyptian esp) emerge and so have this semi-remembered link I need to explore.

A fascinating subject…thank you for Brida!!

  • About traditions of the sun and moon.

One thing popped up in my mind:

We need the balance between them.

I also wish that I knew more about them.
But I also think we have the key inside our own heart, whatever tradition we choose.

We just have to listen to our heart whispering to us, and sometimes we can need some help how to do that.

    Annie Reply:

Is these traditions (of the Moon and of the Sun) the other practices of RAM that compliment those of The Pilgrimage? This was what I understood..Am i wrong??

    [Reply]

    Paulo Coelho Reply:

RAM basically teaches the Tradition of the Sun (experience). The Tradition of the Moon is knowledge + rituals.

    Annie Reply:

So does the Tradition of the Sun compliment those practices mentioned in the Pilgrimage?
And since RAM basically teaches the Tradition of the Sun, that means that everyone has access on it! SO is it a simple Tradition in comparison with the Tradition of the Moon?
But I wonder,is this Tradition of the Sun learned only when one begins to walk his path? and Is this tradition learned only when we have faith (i m referring to the dark night) in us and in the Universe, despite heading towards an unknown territory? is this a tradition that condemns fear (of the unknown or failure) and celebrates Love? Maybe i m wrong again!

And can someone experience both the Traditions? as the Magus learned the Tradition of the Moon , but taught the Tradition of the Sun?or one is best to follow one of them?

Excuse me for the many questions, dear Paulo ..
