The Warrior of Light knows the the old Arabic proverb that says: “God judges a tree by its fruits and not by its roots.”

recognize ourselves
yesterday is the root
now is the fruit which is the root of
tomorrow is the fruit

It seems that there are many ways of interpreting this proverb, and all very interesting. Diversity is such a wonderful thing!
The thing that this quote reminds me of is a subject that has come up, for some reason, in several conversations of which I have been a part over the past few days. That subject is: how one’s diet does or does not affect one’s “holiness,” “purity,” “worthiness” (whatever term you want to use) in God’s eyes. If you are Jewish, for example, you wouldn’t dare eat a crawfish. If your Muslim, no pork. If you’re a Yogi, you’re likely a vegetarian, perhaps even a raw-foodie. Just a Hindu, in general, well of course, no beef. Some even say that foods such as mushrooms, garlic and onions, or heavy spices, are “dark” foods that will taint your soul and inhibit your ability to progress on a spiritual path. Still others maintain that anything that is not organic or free of artificial ingredients will have the same detrimental effect.
The thing is that there is no consensus. And no matter what set of rules we name, there is always an example of an obviously advanced soul who did not follow them in his or her diet. Rumi drank loads of wine, although those of some other tradition might claim that wine would prohibit one from attaining any sort of spiritual gain, much less a state of spiritual ecstasy. Numerous saints and sages throughout history ate beef and pork. If spicy food inhibits one from being spiritual, then it must be that few people in Mexico are very spiritual at all! And if we want to get into scripture, then we must also take into consideration the Manu Smruti, chapter 5 verse 30, which states: “The eater who eats the flesh of those to be eaten does nothing bad, even if he does it day after day, for God himself created some to be eaten and some to be eater.” Mother Theresa was not a vegetarian. Gandhi, though a vegetarian, was not a raw-foodie. Jesus was neither; he also drank wine.
Then, at the opposite end of the spectrum, we have Adolf Hitler, who did not drink or smoke and who was not only a vegetarian but strongly believed that vegetarianism aided in spiritual purity and progression.
So, it seems to me that it is one thing to say that this or that diet is more healthy or even more environmentally conscious and thus choose to eat it. It is wholly another thing though when we start touting a particular diet as more “holy” than others.
This is where I make the connection with the quote: “God judges a tree by its fruits and not by its roots.” God judges us by our works (namely, by the way that we treat others) and by what is in our heart - not by what we eat or drink. Of course, the body is a temple and should be treated as such. And the earth, too, is a temple. But just as there are many ways of keeping a house, there are many ways of keeping a temple. What is good for and works for one will not necessarily benefit all. Whatever diet we keep, we should not judge others as “worthy” or “unworthy,” “spiritually advanced” or “spiritually defiled,” based on what they eat.
Of course, this is just my opinion.
Thank You!
Savita

And thank you for your wise words, Savita. I abslutely agree with you. There is no such thing as ’spiritually advanced’ or ‘defiled’. We’re simply people with different views on life and on how to cope with it, the best way we can. The only thing that sets me off, is when people refuse to take responsibility and think for themselves. I know that patience isn’t one of my best developed qualities, I’m still working on that one …. Being a teacher makes me kind of passionate on that subject :) So thank you again and god bless everyone here,
Ingrid

You are absolutely right Savita! Every individual knows best what his or her body needs.
What we choose to eat does not determine who we are although of course it does affect the body and the mind. Take sugar vs. garlic for example, one increases the blood pressure and the other decreases it.
I don’t believe it’s a matter of ‘holiness’ at least for me it wasn’t. When I became a vegetarian I had many reasons. Mostly influenced by Hindu and Buddhist philosophies and because I needed to renounce everything in order to find my path. I needed to detach. And as a way of honoring God, sacrifice, discipline, will, restraint. To connect to higher realms through meditation, for enlightenment.
Keeping a calm still mind during meditation is much easily achieved with a calm clean body. When an animal is killed, slaughtered, it retains and traps the energies from its time of death in its dead meat and when we eat it, those energies get transferred in our bodies. A similar concept exists in Judaism traditions on Kosher foods. Islam calls it halal and Armenians use the word ‘halal’ in connection to food, say if someone chokes on a piece of food while eating, we say halal meaning ‘be blessed’ or ‘blessings’ or ‘bless you.’
I still don’t eat much meat, I don’t have a strong taste for it and didn’t have it as a child either, although sea food I love! Salmon and Halibut and shrimp and fried calamaris from a sea side restaurant in Greece, with some white grape village wine, or French wine, Mmmmmm Yammy!
Interesting read Savita!

Old Arabic poems rank highly, for me, and this one certainly is ‘as beautiful as it is simple’…
most of all… it is God who judges, not man ;o)

“God judges a tree by its fruits and not by its roots.”
this should not be taken to mean that end justifies the means, that if the end achived is good then it’s ok to employ unfair means.
god judges the tree by its fruits and not its roots, for god can look at the fruits and know not just the fruits but the roots as well. something of the root is present in the fruit. if unfair means are employed, then the result achived cannot be fair, it cannot be good, however much it may appear so.

I take this quote to mean the individual is not guilty of the wrongdoing of his family but rather the right doings of himself. Some people tend to get tangled in their “roots” which can be very important, but not everything, and never bear their own “fruits”. The metaphor here is a powerful one that seems to tell the individual that you are not responsible for where you came from, but you ARE responsible for where you are going, how you are “growing”, and what you produce in your lifetime…That one will be judged by the choices one make about things that are in one’s control.

For me, my fruits are within my personal legend, in my sincere desire to make of this journey on Earth a personal progression, a personal evolution, and to learn the power of love for myself, the other and the Universe. For me, my fruits is to develop my inner potential, its power, to free my soul, to give me freedom and to attain the true meaning of Love. For me, my fruits are those of all the conscious actions to respond to my desire to live the truth and not a lie, to myself. For me, my fruits are to be shared with others and transmitted in a community sense of thinking and acting. For me, I know deep inside that I went further and up, that I responded to my inner voice, even if fears were there at first and strong. For me, I know deep inside that I was able to show humility and honesty upon myself. For me, I do not fear, because I put all my hearth and all my soul and all my spirit to get closer and to “act” and “be” in my path in His Path. And I know that the journey is not finish, for I have to learn more and experience more. Each learning and experience done with this sincere desire to understand the true meaning and my conscious willingness to put them in action, to recognize the power of His Love and to act contrary to what would normally be my reaction just in the name of faith and acknowledging his wisdom are fruits. And when people approach me and sense me they sense the fruits that I have accumulated and that are always there, since the seasons have no more effect. In winter, in summer, in spring, in autumn, the fruits are there. Even now in cold moments, in dry moments, my fruits that were cultivated and grew are there to help me develop another. Love, Jojo.

The fruits of the tree are actions..
The same was said by Jesus, but regarding ‘judging people’.
But again I think that this applies for a ‘judgement’ adjusted to human perception and logic.. Because who can blame or judge some one’s actions - fruits - if his roots or the soil it has grown are not healthy? Who can blame a Soul if everything around was evil and dark from the minute of coming on to this Planet? Usually children mimic their parents, teachers, ‘idols’ and friends, and act according to their perception and mind’s abilities.
So, I think God, who is our Father will not judge us only from our fruits but from our ..capacity to love and desire to find HIM and HIS WAY.
LOVE,
Thelma xxx

Yes, I believe so too, that we ll be judged by our “capacity to Love”
ALso God knows that no one is impeccable.. bu we strive for our perfection, as we are the image of Him/Her..
For me the only sin there is, is one, as i call it, the impeccable peccadilo, which is Not to Love

my two bit on this great stuff from the arabic people comming to us from paulo and an equally great understanding of it by our dear thelma.
Thelma - let me see it ’scietifiaclly’ now.
if soil is bad, roots are bad fruit is not responsible, Ok.
as i see it goes sends us all with a default soil condition, root etc, and we are the fruit. god judges us by seeing how much could we modify, enhance the qulity of our fruit by our own efforts, by our own choosings. and in gods’s eyes things are simple, everyone who makes an effort to be more loving, is loves by HIM.
we are part of te same universal consiousness, presnetly incharge of a small territory called our own life now, God sees what best use we make of our territory, hwta is our definition of best use.
some random thoughts, please bear with me.

i think that god is not going to look at our roots when the time to judge us come but rather at our fruits. even though it is true that during one’s chilhood; children are influenced by their evairoment (parents, close relatives, teachers etc.) it is during one’s teenagers years and young adulthood when a person discover new ideologies. only them the person choose what ideology he/she indentifies her/himself better with.
It is something “in between”-THE WAY,as Dostoevsky suggested, that all treasures in the world are not worth one tear of a child.

The proverb is of huge comfort and also the responsibility of pleasing god by doing what I love and loving what I do, a mission humbly, joyfully and graciously accepted. Thank You Paulo, love to all xo

We are rich in the others. When I take care of me, I pass on some love to the persons. The well rooted tree pass on the sap in its fruits, thus the life…
It is as with the children or the friends, the one does not replace the other one… It is only our heart which gets bigger so that each is its particular place.

This proverb makes me think of the Bible verse: Luke 13:7
“And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’
I always try to keep this verse in my mind, because I want to produce good fruit.

Dear Adyta
In the Bible, Marc 11:12-14, Jesus is hungry and he sees a “figuier”, goes to see and does not find see much. He got closer and only saw leaves, because it was not the time of the fruit. Speaking to the tree, he said: “Nobody will never eat your fruits anymore.”
After, in Marc 11:20-26, Jesus comes back to this moment and teaches his disciples to have faith and to believe in the power of the words, of the prayer.
Also, this is part of Matthew 21:18-22. As Jesus was coming back from the city early in the morning, he got hungry. Seeing the tree, he came closer and found only leaves. And he told the tree “Never you will hold fruits.” At the moment as the words were spoken, the tree became dry. His disciples were astonished. And then Jesus said: “If one day you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what I just did with that tree, but even if you say to that mountain get out of there and throw yourself in the sea, it will happen.” All that you will ask in prayer with faith, you will receive.
So, when I read the proverb for which you wish to have precisions, for me, that proverb brought to my mind that “parabol” of Jesus. Hope it helps you. Jojo.

I also went to see Luke 7, the parabol about the steril tree. There is also the person in charge of the tree that says: “Master, give me another year, the time for me to work around it. Maybe it will give fruit at the end of the year. If not, you cut it.” Is is funny it is like if an angel was speaking to his Master about someone who was achieving something and that angel, guardian angel, that asks for time to help the tree. Sorry Adyta for the two other verses that were not related to this one, but it is always good to read those parabols. Sincerely , Jojo

thanks for replying and clarifying. I don’t know much about bible and various christian fables, they ideed are a great source of wisedom, the fables that is. why have i not yet looked theremyself, firts let me do some justice to what i am surrounded with then i will get into the bible.
I asked because i really wnated to know the background, things attributed to zesus have many laers of menaings, one is supposed to go on discovering as one persists.
looking neutrally, action attributed to zesus, appear quite ungodly, no, afterall what is the sin of the tree if it cannot bear fruit or if it is not teh right season, what is this punishment even without a trial !

Dear Adyta
As for me “today”, I consider the Bible as a writing that has great source of learning, meaning I read and reflect on what that means to me, put it in the light of my present vision, perception, path, etc … I was educated in catholic manner and then, during my journey, was for some time with evangelist. Both of those groups, meaning the leaders, well, they transmit “their vision, their perception, ect …” but not in liberty and love. Meaning if you do not believe or do as they transmit, you are judged, etc … The persons who attend have that strong desire to reconnect to the power of Love, the power of God … You see, I stop here because my words could be interpreted as judgment, or other, and I do not want to go into that. I come back to the Bible, I am aware that it was manipulated, as many works were and are to keep people from the Light. The Bible were in the hands of powerful man that chose what was to be there or get out, that is what I believe. And again, I do not want to get into that. The importance for me when I see a verse, I just see what it means for me, if it speaks deep to me. If yes, thank you God. If not, well, not for me for today but I keep it in memory and stay open that maybe one day it will be light for me, and maybe not. If I do not comprehend all of it for now, well, I do not, and I continue on my path with other matters. You know, Adyta, some chose to not follow consciously and chose to hurt and exploit, and abuse, and for me well I think that those could be the trees that could be cut “one day in a space and time terms that are not ours.” In Sodome and Gomorhe, when God decided to destroy the city, He was asked if he could spare if there was ONE person that was good, and God said yes, for that person, he would not destroy. Meaning, the love of God is patience, hope, putting everything for the soul. He is life not destruction. What is judgment and eveil in ours eyes is not for Him, and sometimes what is love and good for us is not for Him. So, be it the Bible, or any other writing, those are accessories since everything is within ourselves in relation with God and His City and Celest Citizens. Accepting and living our legend as humans, grounded on the earth, and as spiritual beings, connected to the Source, living here what is deep inside our soul which knows and lived in the Celest City. To end, the judgment is God’s or the decision or whatever. The important thing for me is to walk and live as for today I believe is my path and God’s Will. The rest is not important and I trust his Divine Plan, even if I do not understand it all. I better wait for his personal learning that start to give force to everything everybody says, for I did that a time and was confused and insecure and dispersed. So when I cite a verse of the Bible, or any other, it is because that speaks to “me” and suddenly makes sense … and that same verse another day suddenly makes another sense or goes deeper. Many faces to a verse … With affection Adyta, Jojo.
