Dear Paul,
the same song? Wouldn’t be a bit boring?
For example personally i don’t even sing you don’t want to hear me trust on that?
I thought that the beauty of life was that diversity.
What do you think about?

What about singing the ‘Ode to JOY’, dear Paul??
But even if ‘we would not sing the … same song’, there would be ‘more peace & harmony in the world’, if we could at least sing ‘in tune’ and ‘in accord’; something like a Fugue or the Ave Maria .. you had put us here in the Blog once..

The bird is rooted in Being, rooted in the peaceful wisdom that comes from the heart, not in the limited square that is the mind…

May we all remember we came also from that pure space, for that is our destiny…True Freedom!!!

Thank you Paulo for this wonderful quote, you inspire me not only with your books but with this blog! :)

Blessings to all!

Grettel.

P.S. I have a question for you, hope you can answer it:

When did you realize you were Truly Free?

Reply

Catherine September 23, 2009 at 9:12 pm

i can recall my moment when i felt i knew inside how free i was… looking into the eyes of a soulmate…
but i wish i could pin point what it was i understood..
but language of the heart is like double dutch !!

Namaste,
When I started writing, I wanted to know what I truly believe deep down away from judgmental eyes. I offered myself a setting and a topic and just wrote flow of consciousness for weeks. Then I went back and edited, adding some ideas and deleting other ideas. The more I wrote, the more I felt that I knew myself for the first time. I have no answers, only questions… but now I have my faith.

Love to you

Elaine,
I adore that parallel. For me, the first step to my road of recovery of who I am started with writing. I have been doing it now for almost 9 years. Each morning, what is there for me this morning, and continue writing. As I wrote, what was without hope, despair transformed itself. I compare the writing to the singing. I really love where your comment brings me. When I continue writing about what is there for me, making a place to it, telling it, it becomes a song of faith, a song of dream possible, a song of love for myself and my God. Jojo.

Reply

Jennsy September 23, 2009 at 12:10 am

A bird just sing because it is the way to express his happyness and his natural way to live. A bird sings his song because he is the answer.

Reply

Daniel September 22, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Ask the bird why he sings. If he doesn’t have an answer it is because he needs no reason, even if there is one. I am loving this quote.

Reply

Johanne Mercille September 23, 2009 at 2:15 pm

He would say “Well, never taught about it … Maybe because I am a bird? Well, is it just there, natural, who I am.”
Jojo.

Marie September 22, 2009 at 10:31 pm

It’s interesting this quote because I like very much to hiss as a bird but I also like to have some answers in my life if answers are not out of necessity questions that I settled. But it’s normal because I’m not a bird ! ;-))

“If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Throughout the scriptures, the desire to please God was often accompanied by great personal costs. Commitment doesn’t come without a costly price. When we choose for certain things we choose against others.

…………………..

maria-dove September 22, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Does a bird need to have an answer to sing?
I think the quote is all about this.
As a bird gives his best to sing- his life purpose-, not caring to have an answer.
In fact he doesn’t need any for him to sing, so he just does what is natural, what is concetraing his existense.
A bird sings with all his heart, voice and soul.
The bird of the quote can teach us to be persistant, to give all our energy even if we don’t have the answers.
If the answers come it will be as a result of not giving up.

Late one night, a burglar broke into a house that he thought was empty. He stealthily crept through the lounge and was stopped dead in his tracks when he heard a loud voice clearly saying, ‘Jesus is watching you!’

Silence returned to the house, so the burglar crept forward again.
‘Jesus is watching you’, the voice rang out again.

The thief stopped dead again. He was frightened out of his wits. Frantically, he looked all around. In a dark corner, he spotted a birdcage and in the cage was a parrot.

He asked the parrot, ‘Was that you who said Jesus is watching me?’
‘Yes’, said the parrot.

The burglar breathed a heavy sigh of relief and asked the parrot: ‘What’s your name?’
‘Ronald’, said the bird.

‘That’s a stupid name for a parrot, ‘sneered the burglar.’ What idiot named you Ronald?’
The parrot said, ‘The same idiot who named the rottweiller Jesus.’

Male birds sing to delimit their district and to signal their revals “Split, this is my place!”.

well, for the dreamer in you, when a male bird discourages the rivals is because he wants the female bird all to himself. that is romantic!

Catherine September 22, 2009 at 9:14 pm

jejeje! ;o))

earlier i tried adding a comment on songbird tunes… it never entered/showed up…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/programmes/radio/dawn_chorus/

i’m glad to be back home in the UK.
;o)

Catherine September 22, 2009 at 2:08 pm

I often recall to my mind an incident from childhood – of my brother attending school in the Uk after we have moved back home from living abroad.
His local school headmaster obviously liked to be alpha male number one, or something…
because after some time, he began bullying and mocking my brother – who was only aged 7 at least.
I think the headteacher saw my brother as someone who knew too much… my brother could answer the questions posed to the school class pupils… my brother had interesting experiences to recount..
and the headteacher obviously was aggrieved and so had decided to knock my brother’s confidence and spirit down.
my mum tells me of every school afternoon after class, of having to calm my brother down who was crying.

what was worse, was when my mum went into the school to discuss the situation with the head teacher in question.. she saw that on the map of the world, the teacher had clearly marked where our family had lived and been burgled.. with the newspaper article.
ie: he was intent on humilating my brother.

this event always stands out in my mind for me, because though i was not bullied in childhood.. i was often ignored or mocked just for being someone who had something to say…

and so this quote is quite poignant really…

it i saying to me..
don’t judge and thus mock thy neighbour..
just because in your mind you think they are trying to be better than you.. to be the one to answer everything, etc.
try to remember that we honour life as humans… we tell stories, do art, sing….
because this is how we praise God and give thanks.

…..
So i cherish my brother… who was only giving thanks and doing a natural things.. such as singing praise, with His love…

;o)

Catherine September 22, 2009 at 2:11 pm

p.s. the other point i would add is this..
we are not all journalists or writers etc…
and can not easily express ourselves
like professionals on paper
with out thoughts…

so always try to listen to the melody and its vision.. not to the equation or the process…

The person who told me this keeps birds in cages, he had two birds male and female in the same cage and they didn’t sing at all, the female escaped, and now the other male, sings (very beautifully) all the time.

Needless to say this became a very funny joke…

He said to me :”Look how happy he is now”

The best singers are not those loudly and often heard – like the sparrows twittering every day in the streets.
It is the nightingale singing his sweet melody when all the world is dark and quiet. He sings for the lovers and sleepless dreamers out in the night. He gives no answers, but the sound of his voice enters softly your heart. You cannot resist – the lovers answer with tender kisses, the dreamers with hopeful longings.

The song of the bird – Anthony de Mello S. J.

The disciples were full of questions about God.
Said the Master, “God is Unknown, the Unknowable. Every statement about Him, every answer to your questions, is a distortion of the Truth.” The disciples were bewildered. “Then why do you speak about Him at all?” “Why does the bird sing?” said the Master.

The language of birds is the “tongue” of Secret Wisdom. Its vocabulary is myth, but its grammar is symbolism. If someone can understand it, he/she can talk to God. Birds may give an answer…

The last year I heard the song of a bird: “Lil gal, lil gal, teeth, teeth growing”. So joyfully!!! …Very soon the third molar tooth (wisdom tooth) appeared in my mouth. “Oh,” I said “’Little girl’ is getting older…” And that is not so joyfully. :D

a favourite tune for me is the Song Bird
sung by both Eva Cassidy and again by Fleetwood Mac

“for you, there’ll be no more crying.
for you, the sun will be shining.

And the song bird keeps singing
like they know the score…

and i love you, i love you,
i love you.
like never before

…………………………….
of the bird, the song bird…

here is something interesting quoted on the species..

This ‘bird song’ is essentially territorial in that it communicates the identity and whereabouts of an individual to other birds

and also signals sexual intentions.

It is not to be confused with bird calls, which are used for alarms and contact, and are especially important in birds that feed or migrate in flocks.

Sr. Paulo,

I can hear the birds singing outside my windrow right now!
It’s so beautiful, like sweet melodic music. Yes, that sentence is most true. They have a song in their hearts and they sing it to the world, creating beautiful music for us to hear.

Life wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t have any birds singing and making beautiful music.

In analogy, this is true too, we do we write, we say, we dance, because there is something in our hearts and by sharing it, we expand it.

There’s a story… a legend, about a bird that sings just once in its life. From the moment it leaves its nest, it searches for a thorn tree… and never rests until it’s found one. And then it sings… more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. And singing, it impales itself on the longest, sharpest thorn. But, as it dies, it rises above its own agony, to outsing the lark and the nightingale. The thorn bird pays its life for just one song, but the whole world stills to listen, and God in his heaven smiles.
The thorn birds.

I think that we all search for our .. ‘thorn tree’ our .. LOVE.

Makes me think of art and the artist (whether a visual artist, a writer, a musician, or whatever). It is possible to create art that somehow serves as an “answer” but it is difficult, if not impossible, to create this sort of art consciously, intentionally. If one attempts to create art that is “activist” or “politically motivated,” for example, it often seems contrived. It might send the message, but it hardly qualifies as “art.”

The bird sings because it has a song. The artist creates from within. There might be a message embedded in that song – an answer to some problem which the world faces – but the bird is not conscious of that answer when it is creating its song. It is just singing the tune which bubbles up from within.

Laxmi,

You say that You don’t ecpecially understand caged birds (the people who keep birds caged. I ask, should there be a difference?

And what difference is there, if the caging is physical or mental? how many people are there who try to keep us mentally and our spirits under control. How many are there, who seed fear in us, and we live our lives as we would live in a cage, but actually we live in a free world.

And why especially birds? How about other animals? And animals in zoo… etc. etc.

Sometimes I’m the bird.
Sometimes I’m questioning.

But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core,
But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings –
I know why the caged bird sings.”

Thanks for sharing these beautiful poems. I for one can’t stand to see birds caged. They were not created to be that way. I don’t feel so strongly for other caged animals as i do for the birds for some reason.

Compare the width of the sky and the whole earth to make their home to the width and expanse of a cage – what a torture!!!. I know some so called ‘ animal lovers’ who do have caged birds.

True bird lovers (my neighbour is one) just keep a bird feeder in their garden and grow trees /plants that sustains these beautiful creatures. This way they enjoy the beauty of the birds without having to cage them.

love,
Laxmi

Forgot to say:
More “CRUEL” is to put a female in a locked MALE’s cage on one side of the room, and a male locked up in a FEMALE’s cage on the other… THEN the Bird start singing.

Annie, love playing, lil gal? :D
Ok. If BEEthoven was a BEE, then the song of bees should be the European anthem: BEEthoven’s Ode to Joy (for those who do not believe in happiness, just in pure joy… :D)
And I have to tell it to my father! He is a beekeeper. Hmmm…. if bees listened to “ode to joy”, probably they would produce more honey…
Love!

Picasso once got to talk to a passenger on a train, a photographer who was insisting his pictures gave a more correct images of the landscapes they were passing by on their journey, than Picasso’s paintings. The photographer even took out a photo and showed it to Picasso and said; ‘Look, there is a man standing there and a tree, just exactly like it is in the real world’ Where Picasso, with an embarrassed expression said; ‘Oh, isn’t that man a tad short and pretty flat’.

Love and Admiration,
Heart

Don’t believe everything men tell you Annie…we know they love to exaggerate in these matters.. I just noticed some ‘workshop’ for couples by an Indian guru, they have to have sex with the man in lingram (limp dick, not aroused) to take away this constant performance pressure for men…and as you probably know, with our g-spot just inside the opening of vulva, a lingram will do just fine at times, and even be an advantage for women who might get hurt when a man stuff a fully aroused cock in her. (God what do we call these private parts to be decent?)

Sorry,,, off topic yes!!!

I’m TRYING to think of a way to get this back on topic, but alas, I can not! I think it belongs in the forum though: Sex as exercise.. not sure that one has been covered yet! Not exactly sacred, but at least it has a purpose!

Dear Catherine,
thank you for the post, I just have read it. There is also a second reason mentioned for bird’s singing. I will quote here (you can read all in the link above):

“The second reason for the dawn chorus is to advertise a mate. When doing this, males sing songs that are longer and more complex than their repetitive ones used for territorial defence. Singing is an honest indication to a female of the males quality and fitness because it is an energy intensive activity. If a male has the excess energy to sing a long, loud, complicated song after a night without food, he must be a good, strong forager and live in a productive territory. This is what the females want.”

well my mum took him out of the school… it was destroying my brother too much.. he would be in tears after school each day ;o/
we all went for long walks to cheer him up after school.
but yes, hes a resilient boy ;o)
still gregarious thankfully to this day.
apparently the headteacher died prematurely some years ago.
i dont know how these types became teachers to begin with… perhaps it is because they are completely asexual?

it’s insane… all the teachers being bullies…
do they think it is in their job description??!!!
i dont agree with fear in teaching…
people learn if they are inspired.
i hope parents will always speak up if the child won’t.

even i wonder, does nobody notice that they have a major FAULT?i was bullied by my teacher too, she physically hurt me, but i was a kid and kind of ignored it completely as i grew, she then bullied my little brother but he was older then, my brother told her upfront, that he won’t take all that crap and will give it all right back to her, she understood him nicely i guess, she stopped bullying him after that, and now another teacher has started bullying him…so…it all is a part of this wonderful life…

Dear Liina,
There should be no difference , logically thinking, about feeling strongly between a caged (physcially caged) bird or animals….as i said for some strange reason, a caged bird affects me more ..feels very unjust. Maybe I am biased towards birds ;).

Thinking a bit more about the unexplainable/strange reason, it maybe because the caged bird represents to my unconsious mind the ‘mental’/'spritiual’ caging by society, by the ones we love and by those who say they love us. The kind you talk about.

Maybe because i subconsiously want to be a bird ..free to fly as high and wide but still if i want land on earth and be one with the other creatures

And..maybe so that i can sing a song whenever i want to and don’t have to give an answer to anyone ;)

love,
Laxmi

Laxami,
great reasoning.

Btw. I just read that sentence of my own ‘should there be a reason’. I actually wrote it wrongly. I meant it in the way that SHOULD THERE BE A REASON TO DIFFER, WHICH ANIMAL IS IN THE CAGE. Or perhaps that if the cage was mental or physical.

It was my wrong expression. But You answered to the question.

Anyway, thanks for replying.

Love,
Liina
