Would you do a list of 5, 6 or 7 things that you should do to improve your quality of life?
If I think about myself, I think that shouldl stay less time in front of this monitor. Besides that I really care about my quality of life, walking in the fields, enjoying every single moment. I would love to hear your opinion because this can be very useful to other people.
Thank you so much for sharing.

Lover’s Knot -
“Love is a bond that lasts forever,
A link of matchless jewels none can sever.
They on whose breast this sacred love doth rest,
Shall after death, the fruits thereof embrace.
For this is love and worth embracing,
Never ceasing, never ending…
Love is a bond that lasts forever..

This week’s assignment produces a lot of confusion.
1. For me “quality of life” is heavily linked to medical care and sick people, whose disease or medical treatments reduce their quality to live their life.
And I realize that other (political) external causes, such as having no appropriate medical care, no proper housing, no food to eat, abuse etc. can heavily reduce the quality of life of a person.
And I like to bow to these people who have to deal with these situations and show them my respect and empathy.
Looking at this expression in this way, I am rich. Sure, there are my problems in my life that are hard on me, but still I have the very, very basic needs to live my life. I am grateful for this.
2. This send me a friend this week – synchronicity :o)
Your attitude towards life defines not only who you are,
but the quality of life you decide to live.
3. To keep a good attitudes towards life, this is what is important to me:
- meditation
- practicing respect & loving-kindness to every living being:
– animals
– humans
– myself.
#1: so very true! Over the past few years I have watched my grandmother’s world shrink and shrink and shrink. A few years ago, she was 82 and still mowing her own lawn with a push mower. If she had an urge to go somewhere, she merely hopped in the car and went. But then came the day when she could no longer push the mower, no longer see well enough to drive the car. Still, she felt well. My uncle would take her up to the lake or I would come by and take her for a drive into town where she would go grocery shopping. But then it got to be that she couldn’t push the shopping cart anymore, and the trip to the lake was too exhausting. Still, she would roam about on her few acres, going out to inspect the azaleas in bloom, or walking down to the end of the driveway to check the mail. But then her legs came to be too wobbly and she was afraid of falling. Still, she spent much time on the porch, watering her plants, and, on her better days, would make a short foray into the edge of her yard to pull up a weed or two. But then it got to where even making it over the door-step without tripping was a challenge. So she got a walker. When she was feeling well, she would carefully make her way out to the porch swing and there sit for hours. But then, even getting into the porch swing became a problem, and outside was almost always either too hot or too cold for her. She couldn’t even navigate through the front door by herself without someone holding it open for her and steadying her as she went. So, most of her time she began to spend in her recliner. Still, she had the pleasure of getting up and making a pot of coffee or a simple breakfast for guests. But then it got to be so that she couldn’t stand up for that long. She couldn’t remember to turn of the stove or remove the pot of grease from the burner, and she set the kitchen on fire. After that, she was forbidden to cook. Still, she could at least get out of bed, get dressed, and walk throughout the house by herself. Now, even these abilities are rapidly falling away, one by one. Her world is shrinking, shrinking, shrinking, to the point where she is confined to her recliner. Soon, it won’t be the recliner; it will be the bed – one room. One small space in all the world, just large enough to hold her body – like the baby again in the cradle, helpless, completely dependent.
Sometimes my grandmother says the strangest things, like, “I can’t wait until I can drive my own car again and go where I want,” or “I can’t wait until I get better and everyone can go home and leave me alone to take care of my own house.” Her optimism is, at once, deeply tragic and yet inspiring in a way. She isn’t going to “get better” – ever – and yet, in her mind, the future is bright with possibilities.
Every day that I spend with her causes me to cherish profoundly even the most simple pleasures and freedoms that life has to offer. I move my arm, and it does not hurt. I stand, and my legs do not give way beneath me. My eyesight is not perfect, but I can see, out of both eyes, with a full range of vision. I can yet take up some physical exercise and know that, the more I do it, the stronger I will become. If I accidentally cut my finger, I can rest assured that my body will heal itself. I can eat whatever I wish, without difficulty chewing it. Even though I may not know the answers to life’s profounder questions, I can usually remember who and where I am and what I am engaged in doing. Life is full of choices, decisions, viable possibilities. Such simple things. Such pleasures! But how we take them for granted!
Quality of life is not an economical definition, even if economy is important in order to survive.
quality of life means for me the possibility to live the “Now and Here” in the way I wish.
Of course this is not always possibile, but I think we must always try to do it, and fight for our dreams.
I think this is our path.
Love
Chris
Dear Christina,
I do understand the point that you are making – that money is not what determines the value or quality of one’s life. However, I would add that “quality of life” is very explicitly defined by economy if one is living, for example, as is two-thirds of the world’s population, BELOW poverty level. It is only by the sheer fact that we are, comparatively speaking, so well off, that we have the luxury to speak of “quality of life” in terms OTHER than the strictly economic.
So many of the things which have been listed this week by many of us as constituting relevant factors in our quality of life, would be of little or no concern whatsoever to one who is dying of malnutrition or lack of access to proper medical care, someone who has no adequate shelter or sufficient, clean, drinking water. When one is severely economically deprived, buying power and access to essential goods and services is of upmost importance in terms of “quality of life.” In fact, a human being’s basic needs must be met before they can even BEGIN to think of terms of many of the “luxuries” which we so freely attach to the term “quality of life.”
Yes, there is a certain base-line economy whereat one’s basic human needs are met, and beyond that, it may be said that quality of life is not contingent upon economy. But, below that base-line, quality of life is indeed directly linked to economy, nor can it be separated from it and singled out as some abstract ideal. Philosophy, even the best life-philosophy, is useless where there is need of food.
Whenever we think of improving the quality of our lives, we must include others in our desire for continues improvement. We can not fully enjoy the quality we worked hard for if we don’t continue to work hard to contribute in any way to the improvement of the quality of the lives of our fellow humans and that of our environment…That is why wars and irresponsible loggings around the world appalls us all.. We are all suffering badly as the consequences of these killings of the innocents and all the man made disasters…
“IMPROVEMENT” does not mean that suddenly we live in the best and exclusive security guarded suburbs of famous cities in the world. In most cases, as we all know, improvement the quality of life is found in simplifying our lifestyle..If your social status is way up high the social ladder, having direct contact with those at the opposite end of the social spectrum, is actually helping them and self to realize what true quality of life really is..
To my mind, quality of life means not having to worry about being physically or emotionally hurt or taken advantaged of by others..and to my mind, this can only be achieved if others around me feel that they I am looking at them with equality..I have no desire to look down on those who think of me as above them nor do I desire to look up to those who put themselves on a pedestal high above me..If my fellow humans know that I believe that they too are deserving of material, emotional, and spiritual security i deserve and that i am doing my best to help them achieve it without expecting anything return except that they too should aim to help others when the time comes that their own needs are taken care of…
Imagine if there are no wars and no religions that spiritually separate humanity…. UNITY/WHOLENESS is the ultimate quality. ;).
sending love to everyone..oxoxoxo..

hmm..
1. find the right FIRST JOB for me.
2. think less and move more.
3. learn to accept unchangable events.
4. smile more often.
5. and yes, spend less time infront of the computer.. unless it’s work related.
I think that I have improved my quality of life just by reading this blog! It is quite uplifting to read so many positive affirmations.
Here are a few things I think to be important for quality of life today (from my own experience). They aren’t listed in any order of importance, just listed:
1) Sleep. So important to how I function during the day when I’m awake.
2) Love. Friends, family, spouse.
3) Gratitude. Realizing the things that I am grateful for everyday, no matter how small or how big.
4) Balance. Trying to find a balance in all I do. Sometimes I’m more successful at this than at other times.
5) Connection. Feeling connected, not necessarily all the time, but connected nonetheless to the people I love, to the people with whom I interact every day on many different levels, and, of course, with Spirit.
6) Health. Mental, emotional, physical, spiritual. Doing the things that are necessary to me to maintain my health–and, again, sometimes I’m more successful at this than at other times.
7) Perserverance. Knowing that in all of the things I listed above, if I’m not feeling successful at them, then I tap into my perserverance which helps by reminding me that giving up is not an option. I have to keep trying to do the best I can where I am at any given moment. There are always plenty of options, but not if I give up.
I think one of the best ways to improve the quality of life is to see the intrinsic beauty in everything. I believe there’s always something very much positive in everything, and just up to us to see it.
Another is to not be afraid to meet new people. There is a surprising amount of things you learn from others. You get exposed to people who may think differently from you, but that’s lovely because you get to see humanity’s individuality. You learn and from each other.
Thirdly would we to love deeply and fully. Love, in itself, is supposed to be deep and passionate, since it involves emotions. It’s supposed to be unconditional. And I think a lot of people are afraid of that in this rather “What’s in it for me?” society. But the very nature of love is rather irrational…but beautiful because of its irrationality.
Oh, and this is for all kinds of love — filial, romantic, brotherly, patriotic, etc.
Fourth would be to savour life. When you think about it, life is just a blip in the radar of eternity. It may be here today, but in just a matter of time, it will be forever gone. So, we should enjoy our time here as much as possible. We should be able to say at the and of the day that we truly, fully lived.
Lastly, I think we should always try something new. The world is full of new experiences waiting to be discovered like treasures in a giant chest!
I like your suggestion of taking time to “meet new people.” So true, we can scarcely estimate the riches we stand to gain in these encounters. Human beings are catalysts, one to another. Think of science: If you pour this chemical into that solution, eventually it stops bubbling. The reaction has fizzled out. So it is with out tried and true relationships. We can still learn and grow from them, but there is nothing quite so conducive to growth as to expose oneself to new people with ideas and ways of viewing the world which we have not yet encountered or considered.
Improving one’s quality of life requires more than writing a list but for fulfilling the request i’ll limit myself with 5 things.
1. Knowing oneself out and out because the inner you tells it all.
2. Clearing the mind as Santiago did the crystals.
3. Feeding positiveness to the soul.
4. Accepting oneself.
5. Gratitude.
Here’s what brings joy into my life:
1. Connecting with Nature
2. Being present with my son (especially in Nature)
3. Connecting with my higher self, angels and guides
4. Writing and sharing inspiration
5. Sending love into the world
6. Eating only foods grown and prepared with love
7. Listening to music that resonates with my heart and DANCING
8. Falling passionately in love
9. Connecting with kindred spirits
10. Following my heart
Love and peace to you!
1. Being myself;
2. Spending time with children;
3. Dreaming and having my own imagination for different situations;
4. Believing that nothing is impossible;
5. cry and laugh when I want;
6. Believing that I am not alone but the whole universe is with me;
7. Talking to nature;
8. Performing some artistic works;
9. Feeling my existance;
10. Calling my parents every other day.
1) Be in touch with my friends and family
2)play with my cats
3)make my home clean and nice
4)do liang gong at least 4 times a week
5)ride a bike once a week
6)keeping myself away from the cigarretes(11 months already)
7)take care of my little garden
sounds perfect ;o) how lovely!
My list could encompass a few pages, summing up what I like to do, and what I don’t like to do
What really matters to me is the reasons why I do, or refrain from doing, “things”. Economics show me a simple way to measure that: Return On Investment (ROI). Effort is required in order to achieve something, and there’s a (positive or negative) reward in the end. Whatever you do, is the effort you put into it, worth the outcome / result? That’s the question to be asked!
In my view, there are only two questions in life:
What value do you get from doing the things you do? What’s the ROI?
What value do you get from not doing the things you want to do? What’s the ROI?
I have one major rule for my life:
Every day is a brand new day, on which you can, and maybe even have to, make decisions unlike ever before in your life
The past is past, the future is the future, and now is now. Whatever you firmly believe, is your truth. But you know very well that your truth is not everybody else’s truth. So, it doesn’t have to be your truth either – it’s your truth alone, and you can change it, right now. Just stop believing what you’ve told yourself (a long time ago) and your truth will change, along with your life
Write down the list, you already know what it’s like. Start acting on the top 1, and slowly work your way down
Stress and worry less.
Be more patient.
Travel more.
Remember to always make time for family & friends.
And eat chocolate every day.
Yes… chocolate! The elixir of life :-D
I totally agree. Take care
Love
Alexandra
The best quality of chocolate you can find in Belgium,
then you have good readon to travel in Europe and the
pralines are very delicious!!!!
The only thing I would need to increase muy quality of life is to see the life through my children’s eyes :o)
It is so cute, so true … like the Scriptures tell, to be like children. I put that first on my list! Jojo.
1.Try to stop smoking
2.Think less
3.To be a little less demanding with men
4.Don’t get hurt so easily with negative comments
5.Do not worry too much about my family
6.Take care of myself
7.Do all plastic surgeries I would like too!
Things I do to do to improve my quality of life:
1. Laugh, make silly jokes, watch funny films
2. Make love with the person you love
3. Read a lot, even if is the back of the shampoo
4. Drink some wine with friends
5. Always thank God for everything, ask forgiveness sometimes
6. Have a good night of sleep and dream, dream, dream…

8. Keep in touch with friends, is good to have someone to call to
9. Be polite, always, even if people don’t deserve it.
10. Cry when you feel like it, it feels good!
Thank you so much for this subject. I needed so much to think about it and to become more determinate. For a best quality of my life I want:
1. to spend more time for my communication with God
2. to be present completely, with all my mind and attention in the moments when I care of others
2. more sleep, more exercises
3. less internet, more reading
4. to meet new people and increasing my breadth of view
5. to finding time for writing
6. spending more time in the nature and in silence
I should…
1….love.
Dear Mr. Coelho, I would like to use this opportunity to thank you for all great books you have been writing.
It is great honor to write on your wall and give my input on your question “on improving quality of life”.
I am probably going to repeat what you already said so many times in your books in different ways.
Words below I am using as part of my affirmations and they are powerful and essential elements in my life those days.
1. Love yourself
2. Bona fide
3. Learn something new
4. Be motivated/motivate others
5. Smile, smile, smile ……
this morning the tram was waiting for us, inside the violonist played a beautiful tune, what more can you ask hey? and the people were smiling and we had a loud laugh.
:) love and b eijos ha hee!
1. Live 2. Love. 3. Play
Good evening to everybody,
perhaps just doing things which “tickles” our soul f.e. by make sb. laugh, regular life, tidiness, sharing… to enjoy the liberty to think, and the liberty just to be yourself.. to show our body and soul that we care about them..and also feeling well in silence, without doing or thinking about something..for me that’s quality of life.
good n8
Try to follow the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:
rayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
(for spiritual elevation)
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon,
Where there is discord, I may bring harmony,
Where there is doubt, let me sow faith,
Where there is error, let me bring the truth,
Where there is despair, let me bring hope,
Where there is sadness, I may bring joy,
Where there is darkness, light to light.
O Divine Master, grant that I may seek rather
be consoled as to console;
understand that being compreedido,
love, to be loved.
It is in giving that we receive
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life …
thank you, tatiane deiques coco.
i love st.assisi since i was very small.
and i am not sure if it is true but according to my psychic, he is one of my protecting angels.
he is really inspiring.
love
Thanks for sharing, Tatiane! Like Chieko, St. Francis of Assisi is an important saint to me. I often recite his prayer (that you have quoted) whenever I feel weak or unfortunate. Then I will remember no matter how fragile I think I am, I still have the power to bring hope to this world to those that are less fortunate.
(I carry this prayer in my wallet!)
It’s great to have found other people in different parts of the world who are also inspired by this prayer.
Love,
Laucian
As long as I have a debt of gratitude to pay to god, a dream, a joyful heart and love, then living another day in this body, is essential : )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWfxuzJYNgY
Thank you… Much Love to ALL, Jane : ) xoxo
- starting my day with meditation
- fullfilling my daily tasks with a feeling of gratitude that I will learn with each task a bit more about myself and my mission on earth

-nourish my soul with a good book or film
- enjoying life with a nice person

To improve my quality of life, I started to do the following:
1. Pray more
2. Being thankful for all that I have
3. Take the week-ends off
4. Travel every other month
5. Learn a new foreign language
6. Work harder so that I don’t have to rely on other people
7. Read a great work of literature once a week
I am into Carl Jung’s correspondence at the moment. Makes me feel really Young (only 3).
thankyou.. that’s inspiring ;o)
Quality of life is all about trying to have balance in everything we do in our lives.
1. Soak up life’s little moments – that’s sometimes hard to do for me
2. Relax and enjoy life
3. Find my passion – maybe I’m overthinking things?! Should it just happen?
4. Be a better person
5. Do something to give back to the world or someone I know or don’t know
6. Thank the big guy for everything I have everyday
Hugs

be patient (with your self)
be trusting (in your self)
be gentle

be persevering
Love your list!
Come Chocolates
Duerme más
Permitete sentir las emociones, no las bloquees
abraza mas a tus seres queridos
Haz un jardin y cuidalo
disfruta de los bebés, si son tuyos aun más
Wonderful lists! I am noticing a common theme with getting more/better sleep!
– listen more
– trust the universe
– love without holding back
– give thanks
– enjoy the moments while they are here
This is tough.
Ordinarily i would say exercise more, however whenever I do exercise I usually find away to stop. I do not enjoy exercising. To improve thte quality of life I would have to start with eating a well balanced diet. So that will be first.
1. Improve my diet. i already eat well but there is room for improvement.
2. Explore new music. I recently discovered Egberto Gismonti and Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Arvo Part and have enjoyed them tremendously.
3. Find new places to explore. Visit parts of Maine that I have never seen before. New experiences invigorate the mind.
4. Continue reading literature from around the world. Each novel is like a universe waiting to be explored.
5. Continue writing. I have already completed two stories and have almost finished a third. I have also written countless poems and lyrics.
6. Try new food and beverages. Who knows what I might be missing out on.
7. Continue watching films from around the world. Culture in the eyes of others is very entertaining and educational.
8. I know you said seven but i had to listen to my doctor and include exercise more often on this list.
Thank you.
Here are my five things
1. Writing: getting your thoughts on paper, without a censor, to really discover who you are and who you want to be. Publication is not necessarily a goal.
2. Research: It is one thing to read, it is another thing to explore. Exploring helps us see what other perspectives are out there, what we have in common with them, and how we can construct meaningful lives, ourselves
3. Party. There should always be a party going on, even if it consists of a bunch of mothers taking care of their children together. Community is key.
4. Some form of self-affirming spirituality. Life is more than just the empirical. I have found that those who truly believe this are happier than those who do not. Buddhism, as a personal example, helps me explore myself in ways that allow me to take chances I wouldn’t have before I became a Buddhist.
5. Exercise. This is pretty obvious, but you don’t have to work too hard. The goal is to feel healthy and strong, not necessarily to win an Olympic gold medal. Keep that in mind.
>walk a little slower
>eat without haste..enjoy every bite of it
>live in the present moment
>feel every emotion and not try to escape
>smile a lot
>be able to laugh at myself :)
I guess this times forum not just helps others…but oneself too :)…I never listed my to dos…did that today will stick it on my wall…
Yes… good ideas!! ;o)
Счастье – не награда за добродетель, а сама добродетель; не потому мы наслаждаемся счастьем, что обуздали свои страсти, а наоборот, наслаждение счастьем делает нас способными обуздать их. – Б. Спиноза
