The feminine face of God

by Paulo Coelho on October 12, 2009

Since 1989, when I did my second pilgrimage, I discovered the feminine face of God. But for most religions, God is a man.

I believe that God has a masculina and a feminine face, rigor and compassion. So, I’d like to hear your opinion on The Feminine Face of God, or The Goddess.

Thank you!
Paulo

GOD is definitely Female. GOD on Earth is Mother…
She is always for her kids, be the kids Good, Bad or Ugly, she loves then unconditionally, so does say the definition of GOD.
So GOD is definitely female and that Mother.

God is male,
God is female

He is the great I AM that I AM.
He is whoever and whatever you want him to be!!

What is feminine?
I have a very crude answer (and sort of funny when I think a lot about it).

The sun is often referred to as a he, because of its constancy, it is the same shape and same brightness at the same times of the day. It is active, the source of light and energy. A Giver.

The moon is a she, because she changes with time. She could appear and dissappear in the day sky or night, her shape changes with the number of days in the month, and so does her brightness. We have full moon, half moon, crescent, and moonless nights, so many things affect her form and appearance. She is not a source in herself, she merely reflects what is thrown on her. She receives.

Males and females are states of being.
Each with a design of its own.

Perhaps God is claimed to be a He because of the same reason of being constant. The Omnipresent, Omnipotent, All Knower cannot be the one that changes form with time. He remains Everywhere and Anywhere and Above All because He is constant. He is the Source, and the Giver.

Mr. Coelho
I do believe that god is what we describe to be male and female. It is difficult for many to accept this, of course. However, on an interesting note, the female or femininity of what we call god is placed in a very unique position. A position that is strongly tied to our way of communicating to each other, particularly our use of language and ideas. The female aspect is always on the “left” hand, side or whatever and the male aspect is alway on the “right” hand, side etc. Now tracing the words left and right in our languages we find different connotation and emotions tied to these two words. In Latin, for instance, left means sinister and the right means dexter (skillful. In Christianity (correct me if I am wrong) “the son” (Jesus) is on the right and “the holy spirit” (Sophia?) is on the left. This is all food for thought–please let me know what you think.
To end, the male and female dichotomy in god I think needs to become less obvious and polarized. The problem is patriarchal socialization and language usage in our human civilization. Who says that power is male or that endurance is female? So, once we remove such obstacle (a herculean task at that too) it will be easier for all to see that god is parent (not only a father or a mother).
I hope this make sense…

Every force has an equal, complimentary force. This can be illustrated by Taoist beliefs. whether we describe these forces as male and female, dark and light, Yin and Yang, it really makes no difference.
The feminine aspect of God is readily present, both overtly and subtly. In the Bible, God is described as a king, judge, fire, but also as mother, midwife, woman in labour, housewife, wisdom woman (Sophia), mother bird, compassionate womb.
There is much evidence of God having a feminine side, a consort, if you will, and She is ready to be acknowledged. We just have to start looking for Her.

As a kid and until now I always talked to theoon as a female part of god a mother. The opposite to the sun. Even being eased catolic in Brazil at a school called Sao Bento I never told this to anyone as a kid. I did not really shared it until my late 20′s
What is funny is that now that I am 38 I felt comfortable talking to my mother about it. She wrote a book called the sacred feminine. It’s not a novel but more like a study book about women in and religion in society through the ages. That made me realize it was ok to talk to her about it. After that I felt it was ok to talk to her about the fact I believe god has a female and male side energy.

My belief is that God at once transcends gender and is inclusive of both. I believe that Jesus came to us as God as human, in male form. The Buddha is a also a male figure. Hindus worship “Allah”, or father, and so on.

I believe that God sent these male ‘proxies’ of himself because the cultures existing at the time were male-dominated.

Sophia
The feminine face of god- the trinity is Father Son and Holy Sophia (feminine) . Have you studied Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual science of anthroposophy? He has written about the feminine aspects of spirituality, the Madonna, Isis and Sophia.
Yes, the church took away the feminine aspect as well as the human free will aspect when the body, soul and spirit became just the body and spirit. The need to be connected to the church, to connect with god through a priest and/or the pope, this decision to take out the soul aspect represents the disconnect of man’s direct relationship to god and spirituality. The church is not necessary for one to have a relationship with god. Though spiritual communities, fellowship and brotherhood are helpful, more important is the individual’s inner life, spiritual work, and morality.
Anyhow- thank you for all you do. I am beginning to read all of your books again for the 2nd time.
Peace and Love from San Francisco :) Are you coming to CA soon?

salam sir,
well can any one really prove the masculine face of God so as to turn to the feminine side and start explaining it??? if the former is proved, the later would get proved automatically as God is perfect in its manifestation; neither masculinity nor femininity could exist exclusive of each other in God.

I think the problem is trying to equate god to something earth bound – God is a man with a beard, God is a woman with many arms, God can only be worshipped in a certain building. Of course we’re going to try and make sense of it using things we know.
I believe our attempts to describe what God really is don’t even come close.
Yes, it is masculine & feminine but it is everything in between as well, it is genderless and every gender & every race, every black hole and every hot dog and everything else in the cosmos that we have yet to see.

E se Deus for literalmente tudo?
Estou enlouquecendo.

The feminine face of the divine is one of compassion, care, intuition and dreams. It is in the essence of all women who are proud women, free of sexual shame. Feminine is, in my opinion, far more sexual than male. Desires and liberation of those desires are part of the feminine side; which at the moment is abused and put to shame in so many countries and regions, where this feminine energy is feared and wanted to be kept under control, because i am sure with it comes an understanding that is essential to the world and has potential to change the modern societies. (this does by no means exclude the male divine and the need for it)
No matter what, we need unity among genders, to find a way to combine the masculin and feminine in our lives, in us and embrase that we have both in us and around us. And both are needed for the world to be in balance.

I am not clear as to what should be the correct answer regarding the gender of God. Why God created man first and not a woman? Why He is called ‘Param Pita’ by the Hindus and the Divine Father by the Christians? Why Islam refers to Allah as masculine? The Hindu concept of “Ardhnarishwar” is quite acceptable to me personally. Yet, for me, the question remains unanswered.

I think that the God both have a feminine and masculine side.,

Now I’m confused, how did He thought of Adam having Eve?,
Where did He get the idea that what He first created was man and not woman?, Where did He get the knowledge of things having opposites.,

God, is a entity in many religions. Now if you are talking about overall, no one can be sure, for no one can certainly say if a deity of some form or fashion exist. In my own believes, I am Roman Catholic, I view God as multiple entities. Jesus, who was born a male, could have been, or could be now, male or female, for Jesus was the only one born of human body. God the Father, who takes the image of our “father” thus leading for the thought of a male image. The Holy Spirit, who being a spirit, has no form or shape that we know of. God is whomever, whatever, everything, and nothing. Male, female, are descriptions that we humans have put upon creatures in order to describe their roll in reproduction. God has no need for these titles, we were created by him. The only valid reason for defining God as a single gender, is ease of speech. It would be difficult switching between, she, he, it, in common speech when talking about the same topic, thus causing confusion. It is just easier that way.

Hello!

People say there are four kinds of forces Gravitational, Electromagnetic, Weak Nuclear, and Strong Nuclear

I am also told that Ardhnareshvar, which is half male and half female entity of lord Shiva and Parvathi is actually the only force. Some call it Yin and Yang or Male and Female energy.

I feel it is present in all of us, it’s just in males the female energy is kind of suppressed and in females it the male energy thats weak or supressed.

when I see Lord Buddha’s images or even Jesus Christ’s photos I see a presence of meminity in their image/photo.

I don’t know how to swim and why am I telling you this is because when for the first time I was in deep water (5 FT), I just surrendered myself and to my amazement I could float. Now I feel it was the most easy thing to do that I never understood and kept trying other ways thus never succeeded.

I feel maybe it is something so simple to realize presence of these both male and female energies within us that we try in so many other ways and fail.

Surrender can also mean something different to different people, so its all…..MAYA

Regards

Poonam

God in his eternity has no face, HE manifests himself in us and things around us. Where ever you can see or feel it is filled with HIM.

In Bhagavad Gita, the Ancient scripture of Knowledge in India
it says
“I am the inner self, present in all the elements. I am the beginning, the middle and the end of all beings. Non-cruelty, equanimity, contentment, austerity, donation, fame, disrepute, these feelings of all beings arise from Me only according to their nature.”

It seems we see the different faces of God because it is our own nature reflecting at that moment.
