What kind of revolution do you talk about? Like Che and Castro revolution? I think incremental change is better than revolution. I think that the international system is so complex and intertvined today that I cannot see how one can solve anything with weapons. I think the revolution has to happend in peoples heads, and not through killing eachother. And I do not think you can get rid of the capitalist system overnight. If the capitalist system is overthrown and the international economic web is destroyed, economic and social disaster will follow – I’m afraid. But some kind of changes have to take place in order to help lift people who live at the bottom of the social ladder in poor countries. Today 1 000 000 000 people do not have enough food to eat – every day! People are starving to death. Children are orphans and have nobody to take care of them. An ecological disaster might be on our hands in a few decades. Of course – we have to do something. Living in a democracy I do my share by voting for people who I think will work to change the world. I pay money to several different organizations who work for people in the third world. And I work locally with refugees. I know you do a lot in order to change the attitude of people, and also support poor people in Brazil. If I can do anything more, please let me know!

I think by doing all these, you have become who you always wanted to be. Of course, whether these acts please people or not is nothing to be worried about.
The revolution has already started. I also support many foundations and are amazed at all the foundations that are helping people all over the world. I am grateful for all the people who have the courage to help others. For example, Water for People build wells so that children can have clean drinking water and are assisted by the volunteers from Engineers Without borders who build the wells and help train the people to maintain them. Everyday I can walk to the sink and get me a clean drink of water and I think of all the people in the world who can’t do that. Juanes a Columbia singer puts together concerts and helps the people in Columbia… the list is long and I have met some of the Lost Boys of Sudan who are building clinics in Sudan to help the people there… Room to Read, Grameen Foundation, Adelente Foundation. People are opening up their hearts and their minds and are making tremendous changes in the world. I salute them all!!!

we were able to jointly practice as a blog empathy and show heart. probably for many of us 1-in their currency will be manageable but it creates a larger amount, probably not enough to eliminate hunger and problems for children – but it would be different to not doing anything at all.
This an excellent quote – it’s a shame it’s often so hard to stick to. Wy is is that other’s opinions have sunch a bearing on our lives? I try to function as this quote suggests and get so far and then i find that nagging voice in my head once again and i seem to take a few hundred steps backwards.
I just want to say, that this quote is very good if you are alone. It is very easy to say that. Words only words. What is the price? What happen with people around you, wife, sons. I don´t mind what happen to me. But i don´t want to see them suffering. They think different than you. What to do ? I´ve been taught that we must live without cause any pain to the others. if you are with people, you are under their expectatives. If not, suffering will come soon.

For some time, I listen to more my inside. It means that my choices are mine and not those the others. I noticed that to reassure my circle of family, it was necessary to convince them of my choices for not to let me invade of their comments. The second thing which I noticed, it’ss that the close circle of family can be the worst to become that we wish to be. Under the bad pretext of the anxiety or the love… on behalf of tenderness, certain members of my family would wish the other thing for me! According to their opinion it would certainly be better that what I wish for me! I hate this genre of relationship where the pressure is real but the persons master their aggressiveness backs their smiles… I would prefer a frontal shock but I do not like the conflicts then I say yes but I continue my road! I suspect that it’s not the best way of behaving. I grow and it takes time! :)

Why? because conflicts create tensions that provide the energy (voltage) needed to progress and be creative.

I wish i had known this quote a few years back when i stuck between pleasing my mother and my husband!!!. It was like being stuck between a rock and a very hard place.
When i realized that all it took for me to be out of this situation was not to care about pleasing them, it changed my life dramatically. Amazing what a new perspective can do to old problems.
But there is a huge difference between being selfish and not wanting to please others. It’s not the one and the same, so it’s important to be aware of that and draw the line appropriately.

When I was 42 I had to do a severe, major operation.. I had a shock, depression afterwards and an … awakening! I clearly saw that even if I would die, the World would go on.. Even my … things would live longer than me! And the sun and the stars would continue their way.. So I stopped doing and being what others wanted me to be.

It is very true to most of us, most of the times we are pleasing others even being aware of the fact that we really are or are not. It does not matter,
-No one can please everyone and not everyone is pleased by a single one.
-Even God could not possibly please all of his disciples how can human please other human?
-We can motivate other human, we can teach other human and we can embed moral, ethical and social dose for paradise but we can never make them satisfied.
-Life is not in showing who you are to others, life is in learning from others who you could be.
-Let us decide to jump from the mountains and fall into the lakes, because if you will fall in lakes there is higher chance that you will die, it is also obvious that if you will not jump you are going to die, so do what you always got to do.

Everything I’ve already done brings me here to now. I will say, that I found out that when I lived my life only to please everyone else, I was the one that wound up being miserable. I never really knew what I wanted for myself because I was so busy worrying about what other people wanted or expected from me. This kind of mentality wore me out emotionally.
Now, I try to remember to please people, if that’s what pleases me to do so. I won’t say that it always works but I do try.
Aw, the road less traveled…being yourself, and I bet it would actually end up leading to that pleasing of others that we seem to instinctively go towards. How do we get there… trapped in a system of needing money, health insurance, car payments… sigh… one step at time.
I cannot say that I wasted my life in the past. All that suffering, and most of it from my part as I see it today. I never lived in the past for myself when I thought that I was doing it for myself, because I thought that that was the way to be done. I do not hold regrets or have bad thoughts anymore against mother, father, ex-husband, the situations, etc … because of them and because of me I was put in front of the last path to take … the path of my centre, the path of my essential, the path of my true essence. And I went and became a revolutionary … for me. That revolution brought someone happy, free, creating with passion. And I must be honest … even if that road is good, has a taste that is wonderful, it is also a road that has brought me to go see the dark side of me. Yes, the nice Johanne, the one that gave it all, that forgot about herself in order to be loved, accepted, recognized … well, that tells it all … The revolution of love, true love, for myself that enables me today to be there for the other without the fears and the needs … just sharing, loving, listening, smiling for the joy of sharing, loving, listening and smiling. My habitation is now standing on rock and no more on sands, a result of the territory conquered. With affection, Jojo.

A new revolution… How about this…Do not stay any longer than you want in class, at meetings, at work, at dinners, at parties…
Let me give you one example. Today I attended a meeting, where we all received the agenda in the beginning, plus pens and paper to take notes. The meeting made a lot of sense to me, and I was glad I had decided to participate. About half way through there was a 10 minutes break. By then I had gotten the drift of how the entire meeting would keep going, and with the agenda, I didn’t feel I needed to stay for the last hour, to be able to make use of the content. So, I told the leader of the meeting, Thank you so much for this great meting, but I would not return after the break, as I had to leave. The meeting leader looked disturbed at me, as I offended him, by not ‘obedient’ staying the entire time, or as if I hadn’t been happy with the first time of the meeting, and in his frustration he told me he needed the pen back! I gave it back to him, and thanked another time and left.
Was I wrong to leave early? Or was he wrong to get upset that participants leave before the meeting is over?
My experience in life, is…I love to take part in so much, but I hate to have to be forced to sit to the end, to a certain time.
This I revolt against, because to fulfill my dream I must not keep myself in a boring situation.

And I think this is what I wanted to be from the start. And everytime I made them happy, makes me feel happy too from within.

But first we need to understand who or how do we really want to be? We let other people decide for us, we become lazy and don’t want to think too much about our life and the path we should follow. It is a lot of work after all, to make decisions. Just like when we build a house we expect the builder to take all the decisions for us instead of us letting the builder know what we want out of the job.
Depending on where you all live, in Latin America, parents micro-manage our lives and like Michael Jordan (are you the player?) mentioned, our lives are shaped from very early in age. However we should by no means judge or blame our parents for being the way we are. The past is gone and we can learn from it, but the present is ours and depending on the decisions we make now we can shape our future. So, in reality the revolution is not against the world but against our selves. Have a lovely day!!!!

Hay una revolución posible querido Paulo pero no la veo viable mientras premiemos la injusticia, las copias, los celos… por temor a complicarnos la vida. El ser humano parece que puede ser sincero con aquellos que no le interesan o no corren el peligro de irse. Pero cuando temes perder a alguien o partirle el corazón es muy difícil ¿verdad?.
Jesús nos enseñó a poner la otra mejilla para que no perdamos el tiempo en discusiones, rencores y enfados, porque ahí es donde el ser de luz se encontrará en el terreno del maligno, ahí se perderá y su corazón sólo verá a los monstruos que nombra el hermoso poema de Íthaca que a usted tanto le gusta ¿por qué ocurre eso? porque el ser de luz dejó de tener la vista en lo más alto. El verdadero ser de Luz, debido a su humildad, se sienta en un segundo plano pero es feliz, en el verdadero significado de esa palabra, porque Dios le habla cada dia. No necesita ser agradable, ni ser desagradable, sin embargo todos creerán ser más que él y lo verán como fracasado porque es capaz de renunciar. Desde niño intuye que la alquimia está en el espíritu y que la piedra filosofal es la obra de Dios. El ser de luz no persigue un sueño, sólo cumple su misión. Dios le acompaña, y eso es tan grande que vive en un sueño cumplido durante toda la vida. Algo que no le perdonarán los que buscan a Dios en la riqueza.
Esa es mi reflexión, con todo respeto y humildad. Usted es un ser de quien he aprendido lecciones importantes.

True, in the circumstances when we feel that in all cost we must be liked by others, or please others so (and if this is the only way) we would feel needed. Pleasing also in the meaning of ‘forgetting who You really are, to be liked’.
But if we wanted to be so (not out of fear), to please people, out of our love for them, while not getting out of our skin, so to say, then we can keep pleasing. :D Pleasing in the meaning of ‘being who You are and doing good while being so.’
(I am addicted to this blog. It feeds my brain with food of thought and doesn’t let me go hungry. And I keep coming back. Yet, we all are not just net-o-holics – we have life outside the blog aswell. Lets remember that.)

when we are speaking of / wishing for revolution, let’s see what mistakes were made earlier, and see if we can do something about it. although i suspect paulo is spekaing more of individual revolution than social one, but a social revolution is also in the making. look at teh dsparities, rich are moving towards being filthy rich and poor are filthy poor.

As a teacher, I can confirm how much it distresses when a student finds your class boring/uninteresting/unsatisfying. Teachers are highly vulnerable people;-)! On the other hand, they are so concentrated on their work; in planning their lessons they try to predict what their students’ reaction might (no – MUST) be. So, when the actual reaction goes against their plan, they become truly frustrated. They take everything too seriously and become narrow-minded and limited. They fail to interpret the other’s attitude and react personally, thinking only about themselves, thinking that the reason for your leaving is their bad performance. And as a teacher, I tell you: you did the right thing! It’s absolutely correct to take what is necessary and not to force more information into you just because it’s not polite to leave. By doing so you risk to spoil what’s good this teacher has given you.

A teacher, leader of a meeting, host of a party… should be fully pleased people show up and fully pleased when they themselves choose to leave. When I say that I do not like the conflicts, it’s that sometimes I would wish more serenity. One day my mother admitted to me that she had never felt me and that she didn’t understand me. It gave me to think about the link between my mother and me and about the weight of the education. I think that I have my road to be made even if my mother do not understand her and I cannot take a story which is not mine. We thus try to put footbridges between our two sensibilities and it does not go without clashes…sometimes I’m tires a lot and I feel empty. It’s necessary while I take back ” my breath ” to take back my road. It generates changes in the speed of the snail ! Maybe that in 90 years I would arrive there better:))

You said the exact words ” positive conflicts ” although all the conflicts are not positive! I remember the year when I took my high school diploma. I had made a deal with my parents. If I obtained my high school diploma, I left with my boyfriend during 2 years on a boat. If I failed, I stayed. My mother was put under stress to know that I was going to leave. The conflicts were daily. After discussion with my parents, I left revising at my boyfriend’s. I obtained my high school diploma. I left and I cut ” the cordon ” with my mother. Later, I understood that our sensibilities would not modify profoundly. So, we buried ” the battle-axe ” and we have create bridges between our two sensibilities. It does not mean that one made a success every time :)) we “just eased” our characters. Maybe that we shall be how of checks ” chamalows ” when we shall be older!:))

For sure I didn’t mean that one have to seek conflicts for the sake of conflicts. But equally one should not shy away from them..
How many times it take us to go through a conflict to be able to make some vital decisions like leaving ones who are hurting us, changing some bad habits or do what we were postponing for long time..
Yes, conflicts are (painful) part of our life but to make from them a positive or negative experience is up to us..

I was thinking the same thing when I read this post, and almost responded; In Sha Allah…just to show to me it’s ok if you are a Muslim, or a Catholic or a Jew. So, I met a lady this morning who is a Jew and she told us we must read; ‘conversations with God’ and that Jews don’t believe in the concept of Hell, and there was this other lady, who is an expert on Hebrew who said she recently left the church because the churches don’t admit to all the mistakes in the bible. So, she gave us a card to join a group where she believe people are much more open minded. We were talking about books, so I asked them if they had read anything about Paulo Coelho. None of them had heard of him. I wrote down his name and ‘The Alchemist’ and told them he represent a more inclusive view on things, and we talked about alchemy, and I mentioned the sungod Isis, where the hebrew expert burst out; ‘Oh that is PAGAN’! And I just told her, I have several pagan friends with very big loving hearts, and I believe that is what it’s all about. Both of them pretty much just gave me the looks afterwards.
Isn’t it weird in 2009, how narrow minded people still can be?
