Why do we need to look younger?

by Paulo Coelho on November 9, 2009

There is nothing wrong with beauty, but, why do we need to look younger then we are? Botox, silicon, gyms… Gyms are ok if you want to make some exercices but… body building? I have some friends that spend hours in the gym just to pretend to be younger.

We can be younger at heart and if you accept that, with age comes some changes in our body, we should be very happy, because we are getting older. The other option of getting older is to die.

So, i’m looking for your opinion on why do this world ask to societies to pretend everybody is younger then he/she really is.

Thank you,
Paulo

it is weird that people measure life by how long you live it,
and not how you live and enjoy it? or how much you produce or give to humanity?

Its so sad to know that our society dictates us that is important to be phycically beautiful, and this beauty comes with age.

in my opinion i thinik people want to look younger so other people think that he / she has a lot of courage.

The mystery of ageing – for wines and humans – is to remain young whilst ageing and developing your personality.

Lately I am noticing even more than ever, features. The faces of my friends. They do not try to look younger, but still, look young. A glow, radiance from inside.
SO beautiful!!

There is a very deep rooted perception lingering among people that beauty attracts all. Its one of the easiest way to attract attention. Everyone is fighting for a mark in this world and as they say “a moment of recognition is better than lifetime of anonymity”.I have so many of my friends as to what they look for in a partner and they do admit that good looks comes as a stepping stone to initiate any further action.I have seen my parents worrying about mark, etc that might directly/indirectly effect my appearance. We also associate old age with being fragile, dependent, loss of life. But i feel basically its the forever acceptance of people that drive us to be young.

I really agree with what you said “the forever acceptance of people that drive us to be young”. What is this fear of not belonging or not being accepted that is driving so many of us to live chasing what we had?
I feel that finding that inner strength in keeping peace can be hard and maybe a smile and kindness to your self is always a good starting point…

when we were young, we always wanted to grow up.n when we started getting older we started worrying. Its just because we are not used to be of being contended with what we are.our life would become a lot easier if we start accepting what we are in present

because people loves beautiful things. If you are ugly no one’s gonna give you attention. As if you don’t exist That’s the harsh reality of life. How much more when you are old. So, in order for people to give you attention people need to look younger and beautiful. sad isn’t it?

because the same society has made people think that when you get older you lose power and you stop being the center of attraction. Society is nothing like before when age meant wisdom and succesful accomplishments; just a few enjoy the pleasure of understanding the benefits age gives to a human being. Those who are obssesed about getting physical procedures done or by any other mans should try to embrace age with joy and be thankful, and should work on their phyche.

I think it is because most people think that old are invalid, so to feel young and to show that is to trying to prove that i am not invalid.
