A reading from the commentary of St. Gregory of Nyssa on the Song of Songs

A prayer to the Good Shepherd

Where do you pasture your flock, O good shepherd, you who take on your shoulders the whole flock, for the whole of human nature which you take on your shoulders forms one sheep? Show me the place of green pastures and the restful waters, lead me to the grass which nourishes, call me by name, so that I who am your sheep may hear your voice. Give me by your voice eternal life. Speak to me, you whom my soul loves.
This is how I name you, for your name is above every name and cannot be uttered or comprehended by any rational nature. Your name which reveals your goodness is the love my soul has for you. How can I not love you who loved me, even though I was black, so much that you laid down your life for the sheep whose shepherd you are? Greater love than this cannot be conceived, that you should purchase my salvation with your life.
Show me then, she says, where you pasture your flock that I may find the pasture of salvation and be satisfied with heavenly food, that food which a man must eat to enter into eternal life. I shall run to you, the fountain, I shall drink the heavenly drought which you pour forth for those who thirst, pouring water out of your side like a fountain when the veins were opened with the spear. If any man tastes of this he becomes a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
If you feed me with these things you will make me lie down at noon, when, sleeping in peace, I shall rest in light that knows no shade. For everywhere at noon there is no shade when the sun shines over the peak upon which you make to lie down those whom you pasture, when you take your children with you into bed. None is thought worthy of this noonday rest unless he has become the son of light distance from the shadows of the dawn and of nightfall, that is from the beginning and the conclusion of evil, that man is made to lie down to rest at midday by the sun of righteousness.
Show me then, she says, how I must sleep an what is the way to the noontide rest, that I may not lose your good and guiding hand and be brought by ignorance of truth to join the flock of sheep who are strangers to your flock.
This she said when she was anxious about the beauty which she had been given by God, when she wished to learn how her loveliness might remain for ever.

We want love – a love religion, or a love revolution something that spreads the LOVE. We don´t want hate – we have had that for a very long time now. I say let the LOVE win over hate!

Hey Paulo, I read something the other day that I thought was so profound…it said “No one believes the sincere, except the honest.” I think this should be your quote next week. It’s by Khalil Gibran. I think this one quote has enlightened me so much and I’d love to hear what other people feel about it.

This is how the novel Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts begins -

“It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured. I realised, somehow, through the screaming of my mind, that even in that shackled, bloody helplessness, I was still free: free to hate the men who were torturing me, or to forgive them. It doesn’t sound like much, I know. But in the flinch and bite of the chain, when it’s all you’ve got, that freedom is an universe of possibility. And the choice you make between hating and forgiving, can become the story of your life.”

I am aware of some people who hate me.. whether they are ‘confused admirer’ of mine or not, doesn’t bother me at all…

Dear hazel v.
This are two different reasons. In your case you hated because you had a precise reason, but I think that in this quote it is meant about hate without a real reason. The kind that we start feeling very naturally. Hating someone for being so perfect, beautiful, etc.

It is up to us to not hate and forgive, but it is not possible to make other people hating us.

hello. i totally agree with this quote. some people are just full of negativity that they are blinded by the good of other people. this type of people hate others because they envy the qualities the other possess and that they want to have those same qualities for themselves.
if only we look into the uniqueness of ourselves and invite positivity to enter our lives wouldn’t this be a better place to live?

So hatred because of love & jalousie.
Now I m imagining this as an chemical equation.
We got LOVE+(the right conditions for generating JALOUSIE)=HATRED.
Sooo weak!!! Hatred is such a weak “creature”!

If we lose our time on heating others, we risk losing the “admiration” for someone else. Our selves.

For me, Love and hate are the one and same. They always exists together. Whenever u love something, definitely u hate the opposite. Lovers and haters, both are confused admirers. Thats y many love breaks and many past loves unite. Everything is in time and how u see. U cant decide any action as good or bad. Becoz u dont the impact of it in the future, bascially its hard to predict. i say, its a mystery. So u decide the actions as gud and bad by ur small mind for now. But u maynot know the impact of it in future. So u may love it in future. So both are confused :)

I think there are a lot of people that hate it when someone holds up a mirror to them. I think its just a subtle shift in thinking that is required; from “I haven’t achieved the potential this person has” to “this person is showing me how I can stop letting myself down”. If you don’t make that jump then you get caught in a cycle of envy and jealousy.

With love, Daniel

Do not agree. Yes, hatred is a strong emotion, emotions are bindings, but binding does not mean admiration, if I am chained down I accept the presence of the chain but do not like the feeling.
I would be happy to get rid of my hatred but I definitely do not admire and no I am not confused at all regarding my reason for hatred.

Dear Santosh, I agree with the last part of the first sentence, but for the beginning I have some difficulty. “Whatever I am doing is not real, whatever I did nobody will care.” And if what is done is done out of love and what I did was done out of love, that action of love is not real and nobody will care???? What I do becomes reality the moment I do it and what I did will leave an impact, be it negative or positive and at least one person will “care”, no? Need your lights here. Cordially, Jojo.

I think it is the reverse: some haters pretend to be admirers! or probably, some (that are not haters) are just surprised by the admiration that one receives, so they try to describe it, or find a cause-and-effect mechanism, just in the same way that a biologist explains the scent of a flower as some chemical and molecular reactions (which is good but just for biology books, but not to describe human enldess feelings!). once one our wise men in Iran said: “the beauty of a flower`s petal is blighted under the knife of microscopist”.

I don’t agree with this quote in some ways. I have hated a few people in my life. I hated them for their hurtful actions that either hurt me or my loved ones. There is no ‘confused admiration’ in these cases.

There are unfortunately so many other kinds of hates in this world, that is racial , gender , religion etc which also cannot be explained by this quote. These hates are so strong enough to turn people into suicide bombs and kill mindlessly.

This quote may make sense when someone ‘hates’ you for no apparent reason or for any specific action because the have judged you wrong. (I put ‘hate’ in quotes here becasue i don’t think this is hate at all)

I have sensed hostility towards me with some people who after a few conversations have turned friendly. Some of them have come out and said that they had judged me negatively and i’m so differnt from what they expected. These must be the confused admirers.

are we being generouus towards our haters or simply declaring them as fools !! surely u don’t include all critics in that category, as Tina has said hate is a strong word. let’s not call our critics as our haters, just unhappy lovers.

while speaking about haters, a wol has no haters, just critcs, and let’s remember what that mediaval saint Kabir said about critics – he said ” nindak niyare rakhiye “”" sparing u hindi in roman script what he said was ” keep your critics near u, they cleanse u of your grime without u having to apply any soap and water”.

I will not judge the hater for what he is doing. I would be doing the same, and the act of judging is in my book not to be accepted but recognized as a mean to defend oneself. Someone that shines will be cause of blindness for the other who is in the dark. I am so grateful that I am able to be more detach of the act, or falling into the same pattern as the other, of being able to “see” underneath more and more. As someone that is viewed as a leader, that possess that energy around me, and as the creator and leader of the place of work that I started, collegues fall either in “idolizing” me or “attacking me” … at the beginning I was not able to receive all those compliments, signs of how I was a figure of courage, force, value, etc … for some as I was not able to be witness of attitudes, words that came from a certain person. With time, I understood that her resistance to be part of the group and to recognize my ideas, etc, was talking about her and not intended to hurt me with a conscience. I today am able to see that as how I “talk” to her, “disturb” her, because I am who I am, developing my forces, working on my weakness, being more and more in line with my essence, more and more in the light. Now, today, and that was not there like a year ago, I am able to stay in relation with her, hear her, accept where she stands and no more defend myself, explain, justify, and even lower my energy in order not to disturb her anymore. I have to be who I am. And when I am there, like now as writing, I feel tears when I think of her, how she is not free, in a judgmental mode of thinking for herself that at the exterior reflects in judging the other, rejecting the other. I am able to listen to her, be sensible to her, and still listen to myself and be sensible to myself, and that brings me to do what I have to do, to pursue, letting her free to leave or stay …
Cordially,
Jojo.

Haters? I do not know them as such, are people “lovely” operating guided by fear, as we know if love is “all” has not opposite, but in different ways of looking at it, fear and love are different ways of assessing life, to see the truth of things, may be this is the best easiest wao to Enlightenment…
If I act in or with fear, I feel separate, if I act with love, I feel joined, and I recognize that “all & everybody around me is my mirror” and that “we are all one”, that “hate” same fear that has created the masks of the Ego: hatred, mistrust, guilt and the trial … Paulo thanks for sharing light

It makes me think about the alst week quote: stop “pleasing others” and start being yourself:
I’ve met a true hater in my life, and somehow, I think he hates people who are loved by many others because he thinks they are untrue, that people true to themselves can only be hated by others! Crazy!
But deeply these people are indeed “confused admirers”, because it unconcious, they also would like to be loved but they forgot it, yet they still know it inconciously.

Then there are all kind of people in the world, and haters are usually passionate, reactive and radical people, who can hate you one day and die for you the next day if you’ve touched their heart!

Reply

Liina.L November 16, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Possible.

But I do not understand the concept of hate. Hate in fact is quite blind way of acting at (most) times. Why to sent out feelings of hatred to someone who You (if admitting the truth) often do not understand. This I mean towards maybe famous people, or people in media, or critiques as a profession etc.

We also send hate towards to people who have commited a crime. In this way the hate is hidden – we wish for justice/payback. We act out of hidden hatred. Feeling “glad” and relieved if they have got their revenge when caught and punished.

I understand (the reasons) behind this way of acting, but I wish we wasn’t so full of hatred. It is a dead circle, and after misjudgement or after jealousy or the need to feel supreme (in our opinions) it will not do us any good to be in this circle, and if we don’t try to break out of it, it will eat out all the good from us.

~*~*~*~

‘Haters are confused admirers who can’t understand why everybody else likes you.’ This quote offers that the hater is jealous of all the attention this person is getting who we are hating. A lot of media uses this when creating stories, also every day people in everyday life. Wether they are famous or not. Wether they are talking about a famous person or not.

While this is correct, it yet gives me a feeling of selfadmiration.

~*~*~*~

I think it’s the same thing with believers and atheists. I think atheists are funny – they put all this energy to deny of the being of ‘nothing’, as they claim.

~*~*~*~

The sad thing is, we often judge others acting this way, even though we ourselves act this way also. If we do not start from ourselves (M.Jackson ‘Man in the Mirror’), nothing ever will change.

If more people understood that hatred is a neverending circle and trying to break out of it, living without it would change our lives termendeously to a better, healthier way. Without using our energy to “useless” matters.

Love,
Liina

I do think you right, and when I feel bit jealousy, I try to change, because I can find a great friend in an better person than me. So why feeling hate? We must struggle a bit to see all, not only one side. Sometimes we feel jealousy towards people we think they have a great easy life, but behing the glitter there must be a heave background, dramas we dont know.
Much Love

Dear Johanne,

“What I do becomes reality the moment I do it and what I did will leave an impact, be it negative or positive and at least one person will “care”, no?”

Well, First I am just little more curious to know- what is the reality? Is the reality living in this world physically in flesh and blood or Is the reality in having the beliefs about higher power (faith, love and hope)

I am trying to understand the “reality” in much higher sense. :)

Let us imagine, Whatever we are perceiving in the reality might not be real. But again, it depends on how we think and define reality.

You said it right, “doing” is an action. An action produces “results”. As you said, “positive or negative”. (This is how the current world works based on the principals of “duality”)

But-

I said the above quotes simply because I defined the “real” in much higher perspective similar to the “faith, love and hope”.

I hope reflects some light… But again,I am ready to convince you if you do not find it satisfactory, I am ready to put more words to make you satisfy.

Thank you :)

and

God bless you !

Jojo, I think what you do actually ceases to be reality the moment you do it. Where did it happen? When? Can you take me to this reality? If you believe in Karma then all that remains is the cosmic weight of the intention behind your action, the love, and that is the reality, not the action that happened in a fleeting moment.

With love, Daniel

You are so kind for replying. I have read about that way of “seeing”, of that spiritual courant … I know that spiritually I am not all there, at the top, am in process. No need dear Santosh to “convince” me and I am satisfied for the moment. Will reflect more and am sure that Life will make me experience what I need to experience to bring me where I need to be brought. With affection, Jojo.

I know that what I do ceases to be reality the moment I do. And I know that it is part of my reality on Earth for me and not the other. I believe that all that remains is what is behind the action. Now, I understand the word “reality” in that context. The action does not display the “reality”, the “real thing” … Must tell you that I read many works on that philosophy but I must say that many times the way it is written I am not used to … no, that does not correspond to my fashion of expression. I appreciated the time you took to put some light and with your wording I caught a ray. With affection, Jojo.

Hay Alexandra… I think that it means that life is a game and we are all players. Much like the idea from the Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare

Antonio:
“I hold the world but as the world, Gratiano,
A stage where every man must play a part,
And mine a sad one.”

Dear Annie,

As a “player” in the game (life) …

… “I know that spades are the swords of the soldier, I know that the clubs weapons of war, I know that diamonds mean money for this art…but that is not the shape of my heart..”

Heheheh. After I left that comment I thought that maybe I wasn’t that clear, but you got what I meant. :))
HATRED needs LOVE to exist.

Nice idea the one of red hats. But will that make stop them hating us? :PPP :D
Imagine if it could… That would be a great invention, for all humanity. (It is my imagination who started talking. heheheh)

Maybe you should stick a stamp on or smth like that which says :
“I LOVE red hats, I HATE nobody”. Maybe they’ll stop looking at you weirdly.

But now I m seriously wondering : Annie’s idea, has become that famous already? Wow! Or was it the power of gossip? heheheh
