Quote of the Week

by Paulo Coelho on January 25, 2010

I decided to pull a Buddhist monk and keep a smile on my face till 31/01 ( always have deadlines for my promises…). Smiling non-stop works, makes you and people around you feel better, and it does not blind you to the problems around that must be solved. Try it. Smile now.

Dear all,

-Smile is the medicine of all human sorrows, you just need the recipe for the way to use it.

-What makes the sun smile? Maybe it is an illusion.
What makes the moon sad? Maybe it is also an illusion.
What is the difference? Maybe it is also an illusion.

-We have difference culture, race, religion, caste and creed but smile remain the same in all drivers of humanity.

-No promises are broken in HIS book. We are just following the scripts already written. Nothing else.

-Move on, Smile, Cry, Feel the way you want to feel simply because it does not matter who you are or where you come from, it does not matter what you will do or how you will behave, it does not matter, if someone will break your heart of you will break others, it does not matter.

God bless you all !

Thank you Thelma for posting this video of Paulo Coelho in Davos.
It is inspiring to see him talking of the main Social Issues of our time! I’m very glad that he posed the basic question: “Are we doing enough…? Food for thought!

Yes Thelma, second time I see this wonderful clip this morning. So, How can we move the world to become more responsible? How do we find our mission in life? And, are we doing enough to transform our life into our mission?

Good questions.

On the path , I gived my sufferings ,and, in return, I have received the love and the support of God: a beautiful exchange that we have done here = i took my suffering and he has given me His love.
SMILE

I thanked God to give me a life of joy without suffering , and I have requested Marie : I gave my prayer of my soul with my deep appreciation, and I have received a second time The “saint esprit” in my body = what a wonderful exchange we have done !!
SMILE

I requests and i defer my path with acceptance in their hands, and I receive the inner peace: what exchange.. servant to give and it is me who receive !!
SMILE

Today I understand so many things that I did not know , i feel a world so near and so pure of infinite love . I want to testify , in order to say: this is possible , EACH can live

I gave up to put on smiles or a laugh. they were not just my smiles and laughs then. I sometimes got the feeling that I got muscle cramps in my face.
I deal with my attitude and let it work on my smile and relax.
It is easier for me.
I get the feeling that the PC-blog has its own effect on my smile. it just stays longer with me over a day :o)

Smiles & laughs can be different. Some people smile like nutcrackers: they want to crack me like a nut.
One of my friends inhaled when he always laughed. I feared that he would suffocate… But he finally changed his laugh. at the end he exhaled and his whole body moved when he laughed.

Another friend, actually he was from Greece, he had just a beautiful laugh that it tickled all of us and we all had to join. Making with him vacations (in Greece of course) resulted in having permanent muscle cramps and sore belly muscles.

The joy of the moment is expressed in a smile and a laugh. One can hear it. But — look into their eyes … they say it all.

And it is so true, the combination between a pair of joyful eyes and a smile or a laugh are irresistible, contagious.

Ajahn Brahm in Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung?

“The very next morning, I dragged myself out of bed and staggered to the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror. “Urrgh!” It was not a pretty sight. A natural smile was a nonstarter. So I took my two index fingers, placed one on each corner of my mouth, and pushed up. I then saw this young guy making a silly face in the mirror, and I couldn’t help grinning. Once there was a natural smile, I saw the student in the mirror smiling at me. So I smiled even more. The man in the mirror smiled even more. In a few seconds, we ended up laughing together.

I continued that practice every morning for two years. Every morning, no matter how I felt when I got out of bed, I was soon laughing at myself in the mirror, usually with the help of my two fingers. People say I smile a lot these days. Perhaps the muscles around my mouth got kind of stuck in that position.

We can try the two-finger trick any time of the day. It is especially useful when we feel sick, fed up, or downright depressed. Laughter has been proven to release endorphins into our bloodstream, which strengthens our immune system and make us feel happy.”

It is easy, no pain and gives results.
I’ve tried such thing too. Making silly faces in front of the mirror, especially whenever I used to feel sick, tired or upset. I’ve always ended up laughing…
I think everyone should try it.

A smile to give each day, a smile to share each day, a smile thanks to the LIFE , HAS ALWAYS KEEP AND TO GIVE : THE SHARING OF MY HAPPINESS AS A GIFT TO EACH , AS A SHARING OF LOVE OF LIFE
Even if you do not know yet : smile , it is you smile and be happy; smile is to share a bit of joy with the other , it gives the joy and sometimes restores life ( i know some of my patients as it rushes in my office for the rehabilitation –why? To working? Not for having the happiness of smile together and in the joy work ..to treat themselves )

I think back to you Eric , the final stage of your cancer, i read you your book on the angels , i was always a joke with you (i’m thus, thank God): this gived you a lot of “good” , to me also Eric , thank you … and I thank the patient who have laught with me , because without the knowledge , they help also my suffering …

now I do not suffer , I am well and I still continues to smile , and i smile each day in tasting the present: ” CARPE DIEM AND LOVE ” is the smile of God in my life
:-D

sido66 January 26, 2010 at 1:06 pm

I have always smiled , AND i have always liked other , and that, since i’m young: Thank you, Lord to help me to always keep the smile , and to love again and again: when i’ll see YOU( not yet …”i want to stay here , I first want to learn them to love” , i said , on the day of the feast of St Paul.. ) I you enjoy and I will be the most happy…i’m coming later …said with A LARGE SSSSSSSSSSMILE

I agree, to smile give some strength. It exists near to me a man who often makes the charity. Every time I cross him, I say hello with the smile and by looking at him in eyes. Naturally, it no résoud the problems but it’s simply a way to recognize him as human being even if he is not “correct” in our society. There is a human being with a soul…as me! :)
Poem and music because I love smiling :))

A smile

A smile costs nothing and produces much,
It enriches those who receive without impoverishing those who give,
It only lasts a moment, but sometimes his memory is eternal
Nobody is rich enough without it,
Nobody is poor enough not to deserve
It creates happiness in the home, it warms the hearts
It is the tangible sign of friendship
A smile gives rest to the tired,
Give courage to the most depressed,
He can neither buy nor afford, nor steal,
For it is something that has value only from the time he gives.
And if indeed you meet someone who can smile moreBe generous, give him yours,
For no greater need of a smile as one who can give to others.

Yesterday… I/we decided, with the woman that I love and indeed have loved for the last 26 years… we decided to break all contact… (our story is somewhere on Paulo’s blog) because the pain of not being able to be together and still to have contact (I have young children with my wife) is to great… BUT I am still smiling!! as I know what love is… I am happy in knowledge that I have experienced pure (sounds corny huh?) love in the briefest moments… that however painful it is not to be together that we know we love each other… and that my choice to raise(and protect) my children is the right choice, for them… as it will have a far bigger impact on their lives.

Reply

Lukom January 26, 2010 at 12:33 am

Curious. Don’t you think that you do your children a disservice by not exposing them to life’s challenges which ultimately bring happiness by being with the one with whom you are in love? As a child of parents who stayed for kids, I am none the better. In fact, I find myself repeating my mother’s mistake.

A friend of mine was facing serious problems feeling almost suicidal. Disturbing memories kept coming back and he couldn´t find a way out. He is an English man and on impulse he drove to the icy fields of Avebury to cry out. As he is a deep thinker, watching the trees he realized that these had no parties or worries. Like the stones trees just watched the seasons come and go, standing in glory. Then a profound thought burned into his brain. He realized that all the sadness in his heart was part of his own darkness, and his way of viewing things. He went back home, started a huge bonfire in the back garden of his house. He destroyed the past cleasing his surroundings. Buying new furniture, new closes, changing the colours in the rooms, using new sheets and new pillows, putting a SMILE on his face he started a new life!

Smile tho’ your heart is aching,
Smile even tho’ it’s breaking,
When there are clouds in the sky you’ll get by,
If you smile thro’ your fear and sorrow,
Smile and maybe tomorrow,
You’ll se the sun comes shining thro’, for you.

Light up your face with gladness,
Hide ev’ry trace of sadness.
Altho’ a tear will be ever so near,
That’s the time, you must keep on trying,
Smile, what’s the use of crying,
You’ll find that life is still worth-while,
If you just smile.

Paulo, I love this quote!
I love it because smiling, is what I love the most. If you want to share some love to others even to strangers, give them some smiles and the day will be better.
Look I am smiling in my pic. hehehe
Smiling can make us and others happy, smiling is what we all need. I smile every day, and keep doing it so most of the time I feel happy, cause I’ll see that people who have encountered me would start smiling and have a few minutes of happiness more during their day, but for me that means almost the whole day.
When you start smiling, you will find your self thinking positive most of the time and wanting to be so. I am not saying to be flying on the clouds but as Annie says: “Head in Haven feet on Earth”
The more you smile the more you heal your self. I was saying to my friend today:
I think I am going nuts these days. After a week we start the period when we give our exams and I am only thinking about having fun. I will be studying of course but I don’t feel stressed at all.(as usual) hihihihih

Smile people smile!

One years ago , I remembered so much that I was waiting one of my dearest friends who went outside and can’t talk with me by phone , I missed him very much and cared much, he had told he ‘d given me call as far as he return back! I trust him! Till the right day I thought he should have been back then I called him , nobody answered, I fell terribly bad and afraid he had made some wrong , I only know one of his friends, so I called her and I know he have returned back and talked with her! I feel hurt that’s like a betray! I remember I was driving my car and the tree is turning green and I told myself: don’t forget smile , don’t forget breath…… Even one year later I still can feel the pain but everything is gone the only thing I should remember is always: don’t forget smile! And smile is one of the useful way to draw myself to the present and keep me away from the useless worrying and fearing! Nowadays I always reminds of myself: smile smile smile is the most beautiful dress to a woman!smile Is spring! Because no matter how hard , it can be gone!

Smiling is the manifestation of our approach to life, is a message we send others. It shows that we live our present and we are ready to receive what life gives us and so being open to life makes us open to other people and more sensitive to their problems.
Smiling must be the result of a positive vision of life that allows us to believe that something beautiful might happen in every moment of our existence.

What really counts is the smile of the heart…

jitatmanah prashantasiya paramatma smahita
sheetosheena sukhdukhesu tatha mana apmana yo
(this is a sanskrit shlok from the hindu scriptures Bhagwad Gita)
it means:
for one in whose heart god resides he is unaffected by hot or cold temperature,or happiness or sadness, respect or disrespect, and only he can be the one who can be neutral in all phases of life,

seems MrPaulo has already reached that stage, and infact he also inspires his readers to believe in God,

Strange I so the same thing, (I do like buddhism too) but smiling at people relaxes you and it evokes a mirror neuron response in people who look at you… some people get unnerved when you smile at them but that tells you more about their inner state than I think they care to show… very good post… I smile even when sad… as I feel happy even in sadness…

You have to be strong for your dog, confident in your love for this creature. I’m sure that you filled and will fill the life of this dog with enormous love and affection and this is the most important thing for you and for her.
Anyway take your time to find the way to go beyond this difficult situation. Sometimes we need to stop and take our time to realize what happens to us and how to face it.
You’re not alone
love, Alice

Yes, Annie is sooo.. right. Smile to your dog. Smiles are able to make pain vanish. Especially when you have to deal with ill people or animals. They all need it, like someone who is thirsty needs water.

Alexandra,

I know how bad the illness of a dear friend can be. Just think about the great times you two have had together and this should give some comfort to your spirit and hers too.
I posted an old e-mail a while back in regards to why dogs move on so quickly, even before we do.
Just think she loves you so much and has taught you the power of infinate love for a friend.
I pray you find comfort….
I lost my first dog when I was 8 and that has been the worst loss of my life…..

Love

Monica

You are right, is not good she notice I am sad, but tears just fall…But really I smiled, because mom did same as me, and I felt that was weird, like we cry in duet…But I try to think positive, maybe after a bit I find the balance I need. Thank you.
Love to you too, sorry I was sad, but the smile will be , now or bit later, promise.

Thank you dear Alice, I know is that way life, sometime we must accept, but we hope that moment never arrives or later. See, is as for humman, I went for a small problem her one ear ached, but there the shocking news. Now I smile…I understand why people avoid doctors, they afraid of what might hear.
Hope I learn to cope with this, I try.
Thank you so much
Lot of affection

Thank you, Annie. I’m not familiar with Gibran’s quote; I’ll try to find it! It’s true in life, sorrow can turn into joy and joy into sorrow!
I think Hanh was probably meaning that smiling can be used as a kind of therapy!?
Anyway, let’s try everything !!!

Thats the bad idea, that she might suffer. I know dog never live too much, not as us, so one day the part, but is harder if we had great time. I think is that my bad point, being always afraif of losing a dear person, or my friend. But now I thank you all for your kind words, really helps a lot, I am sorry I bothered you all with my problems, now I try to make here days easier, guess I spoil her bit…When we walked in the morning she was happy, I was too, she played as when was baby.Again many thanks to all of you!!!
Much love

I don’t know whether this is a “bad point”? <3
I think it is human and being alive. even elephants weep and have funerals when one of them dies ….

all the best for you both. maybe she feels good now because she feels that you know it now and can better understand her?

Roger Caras had a nice farm with a kind of private humane society organization. he took in all kind of animals including cats and dogs. In one of his books he described how he and his family deal with a death of an animal, since he has so many and exposed to it again and again. He just described that he tries to think not that an animal is gone/died but that it had a good life and could enjoy it.
big hug, you both

That’s really true! I’m one of those people who avoid doctors…but I recognise that sometimes It’s better to know than remain unaware because it gives us the chance to find the way to cope with.
I embrace you love, Alice

Thank you again, all is so great reading kind comments, a great support. I just try now to find things best, natural, if theres no medicine…I am cooking nice heatlthy meal, with all things I read is good against ilness, hope will help a bit.
I remembered a lady I knew, sister of one of my neighbour, was living near our house. Before she made hats, for women. She greeted me always:” Up your head, be proud…”Sure all with a real smile, the interesting thing is that even after, when was very very old, alone, she couldnt take care of herself, was the same greeting. I think she was unbeatable.
Again I thank you everybody for every kind word and understanding, and for Paulo because he brings us togheter.
Much love

Some days all the sunshine is going away, all the smile disappears.
There is no light without darkness, no smile without tears.
The smile on the face is useless without the smile in the eyes.
Today I can’t but for sure tomorrow I will have the yellow light of the happiness around me.

Today, all is just fog, like in this city around…….the sorrow is also mine.

Dear Gabriella,

Yes there are days like these.Fog is all around,in the sky,in your mind and in your heart..but then the fog disappear and you can see your way again. It’s perhaps a human condition to feel that way as we are so many.Don’t worry days are never the same.I wish you well and that sorrow will soon and fog will soon be replaced by the the brighest joy and blue sky ever.

Much love

Candie

The smile on the face is useless without the smile in the eyes.

agree :o)
I also like to go with my feelings. I learned it is better for me to stay with them. I got too much conditioned on good behavior :o)

yeah, today it is so, tomorrow it can be different: I love myself with a smile and without it….
it’s ok.

I have changed over time by using this philosophy. I used to be more unstable with my smile. right now, nothing really works well: friends and family are very sick or old, I need a job. it looks all so extreme. but still, I feel centered, recognize the beauty of things and the moment. and then when my cat wakes me up in the morning looking into my face …
I am not losing my smile. it comes from the inside.

yeah, this is great when people laugh so loudly :o)
a kind of funny, how much a laugh can affect the body, its movements and the use of its muscles :o) and then at the end one is exhausted in a good way.

to be serious:
Greece is in my mind for a long, long time.
There are places in the world where I feel I belong to.
Greece is one of them :o)
