Be like a river

by Paulo Coelho on March 4, 2010

Paulo Coelho

“A river never passes the same place twice,” says a philosopher. “Life is like a river,” says another philosopher, and we draw the conclusion that this is the metaphor that comes closest to the meaning of life. Consequently, it is always good to remember during all the year to come:

A] We are always doing things for the first time. While we move between our source (birth) to our destination (death), the landscape will always be new. We should face these novelties with joy, not with fear – because it is useless to fear what cannot be avoided. A river never stops running.

B] In a valley we walk slower. When everything around us becomes easier, the waters grow calm, we become more open, fuller and more generous.

C] Our banks are always fertile. Vegetation only grows where there is water. Whoever comes into contact with us needs to understand that we are there to give the thirsty something to drink.

D] Stones should be avoided. It is obvious that water is stronger than granite, but it takes time for this to happen. It is no good letting yourself be overcome by stronger obstacles, or trying to fight against them – that is a useless waste of energy. It is best to understand where the way out is, and then move forward.

E] Hollows call for patience. All of a sudden the river enters a sort of hole and stops running as joyfully as before. At such moments the only way out is to count on the help of time. When the right moment comes the hollow fills up and the water can flow ahead. In the place of the ugly, lifeless hole there now stands a lake that others can contemplate with joy.

F] We are one. We were born in a place that was meant for us, which will always keep us supplied with enough water so that when confronted with obstacles or depression we have the necessary patience or strength to move forward. We begin our course in a soft and fragile manner, where even a simple leaf can stop us. Nevertheless, as we respect the mystery of the source that gave us life, and trust in His eternal wisdom, little by little we gain all that we need to pursue our path.

G] Although we are one, soon we shall be many. As we travel on, the waters of other springs come closer, because that is the best path to follow. Then we are no longer just one, but many – and there comes a moment when we feel lost. However, as the Bible says, “all rivers flow to the sea.” It is impossible to remain in our solitude, no matter how romantic that may seem. When we accept the inevitable encounter with other springs, we eventually understand that this makes us much stronger, we get around obstacles or fill in the hollows in far less time and with greater ease.

H] We are a means of transportation. Of leaves, boats, ideas. May our waters always be generous, may be always be able to carry ahead everything or everyone that needs our help.

I] We are a source of inspiration. And so, let us leave the final words to the Brazilian poet, Manuel Bandeira:

“To be like a river that flows
silent through the night,
not fearing the darkness and
reflecting any stars high in the sky.

And if the sky is filled with clouds,
the clouds are water like the river, so
without remorse reflect them too”

Russia: March 24th – Teacher’s Day & Agni (Fire) Yoga day (teaching of N.Roerich).

***
D] Not all stones should be avoided…

ELEVENTH TEST: “In one of the seven valleys there is a village on the top of a mountain where Pilar and her companion sat at the spring and chatted. Later on, Pilar will go down to the river Piedra and weep in sadness… The important thing is that in this village lives a Witch of the Cathar tradition whose house caught on fire and she came out unscathed.”

The day an Angel arrived from the river Piedra with the glass and some oranges, he told me of the Cathar Witch who revealed her magical secret to him… SO, I got to know it, too.
Jaqueline Peyrot catched my hear and stopped me in the Melk Abbey… I was not able to understand her while someone translated a couple of words she said to me: “REAL???” she asked – “Of course, I’m real!” I laughed. “Magnificent!” she replied — & Nothing more.
Near the fountain of the Abbey the Witch talked to me again and asked the same, and AGAIN I could understand just some words…
When I arrived home, I didn’t expect to meet her again. This time she came in my dream – there where no [language] barriers exist.
“Speed ships… create waves… fog and storms….*so on*,” she said, “AND STAND STILL.”

***
Did you see two fishes in the fountain of the Melk Abbey? No one saw… I’m sure, these were two Koi fishes…

***
Thank you for the evening. Thank you for the lesson. Thank you Cathar Witch for the blessing! Love

I heard this song for the first time yesterday and it immediately reminded me of this post!

A Certain Someone – Red Hot Chili Peppers

Floating upstream I’ve seen
The spider and the snake
A trip without pause
When I saw my mistake

And it sounds just like Celeste by Donovan:

In my crystal halls a feather falls
Being beautiful just for you
But that might not be quite true, that’s up to you.

For fun, I remember once in high school we had an important test in Literature. I wrote what I thought, the fact was it was my favourite poet poem. Was about a little spring that become river than went to sea and all the passing through fields and mountains was a metaphor of human life. Interesting when teacher came and said only one student saw that metaphor(allegory better), i.e. me…from all the high school. Memories…

Life is not a long quiet river as so aptly the title of a film. It’s amazing to discuss the Water for life in an age where it becomes increasingly a source of conflict between countries for his possession as she becomes a “wealth” rare !
In view méthaphorique, I think the negative aspects related to water we can learn about what we really are and the strength we have to face the challenges that life imposes on us. We can decide to let us spoil by difficult events, but we continue to believe that life is a wonderful challenge … all in the eyes of our heart.

How did that not come into my mind before?
My name derives from the name of a river HOLDA. I defenitely like my name Olta less when I remember this fact, but I think I should see that river. :D Even though I don’t like at all how this name sounds.
The first time I asked my parents why they choose this name and they told me they’ve been looking in some books and they found this name for me.
You see, in my country my name is a common one, not very common but there are a lot of people who has this name.
At that time I didn’t appreciate much their “try” since I look always for the best, but now my name makes me feel always about the blue and the water. And Ana the one I chose lately makes me think about red and energy.
My favorite combination. Blue&Red :D

All this because a river… Oh my! :)DDD

Manuel Bandeira… beautiful verses.
Water is an element which I love, without knowing why. It just makes me feel like at home and inspires me. It is so magical and pure.
I think haven’t thought about a river this way because I have been too busy on admiring it. :)
Definitely, nature is the reflection of the wisdom of the Highest Creator, but you have to see it. It speaks through its actions and colors. All we have to do is see it, open our mind and let the language of the heart and nature talk to us, so that our mind will know a new thing, a new secret, which was always there in front of our eyes.

But from all of them I just can’t find peace in me especially while reading D], but maybe I know why I’m having troubles with it.

Today I was thinking about the sea and swimming. I was imagining my self swimming in a calm sea and I started thinking about how these waters look like a Divine hand, like God’s. But you have to learn how to swim to be safe and to enjoy it. You have to trust the water and have no fear, so you will learn to be in peace and you’ll be trained by it in many ways. It is just the same.

I can’t wait till summer comes for to go and enjoy the sea. I love it. I love summer…:DDDD

I once could watch a mother who taught her baby swimming. she put the baby into the water, then it drowned and started swimming under the water like a little dog and came up again. the mother always touched her and showed her that she was close. later in the summer, she just throw the child in the water (she liked it …) and the little one always swam back to her mother still like a dog.

Olta,
water feels to me the same as you describe… watching that mother with her girl, I started to wonder whether it just reminds me on my “paradise” days in the womb … :o)
looking forward to next summer, too …..
-k
p.s. I like the wild creeks up in the mountains. one can always here their sound while hiking in a quiet forest – especially in the middle of the day when it is hot … this sound always talks about coolness. and then sticking one’s hot feet into the ice-cold creek after a long hike …

I had read that passage before and gave it a lot of thought prior to leaving, I found there was so much truth in it.It makes sense once again.
Is it because we know deep down that this place will feed our soul when we need it the most and if you are familiar with the place then we can be more authentic?.It helps to cope with the situation you found yourself in better. I found that this has been true for me, I had to come back to find out who I was as the situation I was faced with was deteriorating my whole make-up (DNA) and “yes it is true that “even a simple leaf can stop you”.. I can vouch for that.
Thank you so much.

can be a different, may be a novice try of the sounds from the rivers:)that i heard..

I just wanted to share ;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGSJZwB9DDE

I recorded the sounds years ago with a simple mp3 player, while i was playing a small guitar. After a time, i become the slides from anyone(i dont remember who has sent it to me, that was a forwarded mail). and sticked them to each other! vertical rivers with the horizantal rivers! sticked from another river! hearing and watching from another rivers! river , everywhere!… at a very where… anywhere, the living magic looks like ordinary?

Always the river has a great effect on my spirit, is alive, beautiful, and is amazing watching the green silver thread with birds around, trees with wind passing through their branches… I cant stop remembering quotes of you, dear Paulo, and that make my day.
Must mention all the idea of the river strategy, being flexible, I read also in Chinese texts, while studying martial arts.

Hola Maria Eugenia,
Esta es la página web de Paulo Coelho:
http://www.paulocoelho.com.br/engl/faq.shtml

English:
This is from Paulo Colho’s website:
http://www.paulocoelho.com.br/engl/faq.shtml

” What is the RAM Order, which appears in “The Pilgrimage”?
Regnus Agnus Mundi is an ancient order with Catholic origins, founded in 1492, which studies symbolic language by means of an oral teaching system. In fact, master and disciple are merely labels used to organize the apprenticeship, which is carried out through tasks in which each person seeks out his own answer. The RAM Order has no headquarters, does not possess any occult knowledge, and its founding principle is that one only learns by taking a step forward. ”

I too feel that need for freshness !! while this thought echoes in my being, another thought eneters, a contemplation of age old practice of rosary. every culture / releigion has it in some form. the rosasry counting is based on another view, while u repeate teh same syllables over and over again, it kinda gets boring. there is teh challenge to not get bored and maintain the same enthusiasm while counting nth time, as was the enthu the first time, or as will be if we ‘remember’ that it may be teh last time. in that situation, in order to maintain that ‘feeling’ one has to become more and more aware, grow in conssciousness. my eduperience ( education + expereince )says this ! desire for freshness should not be because of running away from ‘sameness’.

for somethings i am thnakful to ‘tradition’, repeating the gayatri mantra a certain number of times, minimum each day was part of our upbringing, seeing nothing wrong in it, i have tried to keep that promise ( afterall pareents organise such a huge yagna, give a feast to whole villages, they day upnayan ceremony is held ) least i can do in return is do that ‘japa’ sincerely.

somethings are wrong with releigion, does not mean religions are wrong !

Water is so magical! :) It sounds like a pleasant noise. It can relax. But now I was thinking that water it isn’t totally neutral, Scientifically speaking. heheh There isn’t only H2O, but even some other molecules HO, which makes it dangerous with electricity close. heheh It Attracts other more, as it attracts our the energy we have accumulated inside and we were supposed to give it away, so that’s why we feel relaxed.

I just realized how much I’ve missed studying chemistry, and how much I have forget from what I’ve learned. Shame on me. :PPP

It is so cute when you see little children learn how to swim.
Last summer, at the place we were having our vacations there was a big family with a very little boy. OMG! He looked so cute while swimming. We had so much fun with that little smart boy, and he only wanted to swim with my sister. heheheh

Summer time ehhhhhhh!!!

aaah! chemistry. love chemistry … could never understand those who studied it :o) to difficult for me. respect, Olta Anna!
hehehe. giving up energy? funny. it feels grounding & containing for me. but you know: high humidity in the air IS draining … so, chemistry works well in this case :o)

yeah … the sound of water … the drippel, the loud noise of a waterfall, the bubbling sound when a creek goes over little stones, the quietness when it just flows in a large river, waves crashing against the beach, rain …

when I lived in TX, we got sometimes “left-overs” from a hurrican. the rain just pored and there was a strong wind. on those days, you could just wear rain gear, umbrella: you always arrived wet. as if the rain came from the bottom, too.
then there were dry river beds, places that would fill up with raging white water all over the town. living in this town, you knew after some while which way you need to take to get home to avoid those raging waters.
you drove on a road and parallel to the road was the raging water running through trees.
loved that :o)
and then it was warm … so being wet all the time: did not matter at all :o)
summer ….

Beautiful description dear Clary, thank you!
Loved it! I didn’t knew about the changing colors of the river after the hours of the day. Interesting!

Love ;)
