On writing II

All creative processes, be they in literature, engineering, computing – and even in love – always respect the same rules: the cycle of nature. Here is a list of the stages along this process:

a] ploughing the field: the moment the soil is turned, oxygen penetrates places it was unable to previously. The field gets a fresh look, the earth which was on top is now below, and that which was underneath has come to the surface. This process of interior revolution is very important – because, just as the field’s new look will see sunlight for the first time, and be dazzled by it, a new assessment of our values will allow us to see life innocently, without ingenuity. Thus we will be prepared for the miracle of inspiration. A good creator must know how to continually turn over his values, and never be content with that which he believes he understands.

b] sowing: all work is the fruit of contact with life. A creative man cannot lock himself in an ivory tower; he must be in contact with his fellow men, and share his human condition. He never knows, at the outset, which things will be important to him in the future, so the more intense his life is, the more possibilities he will create for an original language. Le Corbusier said that: as long as man tried to fly by imitating birds, he couldn’t succeed. The same applies to the artist: although he translates emotions, the language he is translating is not fully understood by him, and if he tries to imitate or control his inspiration, he will never obtain that which he desires. He must allow his life to sow the fertile soil of his unconscious.

c] growth: there is a time in which the work writes itself, freely, at the bottom of the author’s soul – before it dares show itself. In the case of literature, for example, the book influences the writer, and vice versa. It is this moment which the Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade refers to, when he states that we should never try to recover lost verses, for they never deserved to see the light of day. I know people who, during a growth period, spend their whole time furiously taking notes on everything which comes into their head, without respecting that which is being written in the unconscious. The result is that the notes, which are the fruit of memory, end up disturbing the fruit of inspiration. The creator must respect the time of gestation, although he knows – just like the farmer – that he is only partially in control of his field; it is subject to drought and floods. But if he knows how to wait, the stronger plants, which can resist bad weather, will come to light with great force.

d] the harvest: the moment when man manifests on a conscious plane that which he sowed and allowed to grow. If he harvests early, the fruit is green, if he harvests late, the fruit is rotten. Every artist recognizes the arrival of this moment; although some aspects may not have matured fully, some ideas not be crystal clear, they reorganize themselves as the work is produced. Without fear and with great discipline, he understands that he must work from dawn to dusk, until the work is finished.

And what to do with the results of the harvest? Again, we look to Mother Nature: she shares everything with everyone. An artist who wishes to keep his work to himself, is not being fair with that which he received from the present moment, nor with the inheritance and teachings of his forefathers. If we leave the grain stored in the granary, it will go bad, even though it was harvested at the right time. When the harvest is over, the time comes to share, without fear or shame, your own soul.

That is the artist’s mission, however painful or glorious.

It is so beautiful, you’ve chosen the very right words to describe this wonderful image of the process of creating! I wanna thank you, I was looking for that kind of reminder.

Dear Paulo,

I love the way you rejoice and celebrate in the depths of evolution, These four stages are so relevant to the four stages of a human life as per the aryans, Brahamcharya Ashram, where your first 25 yrs r like ploughing, getting ready and building the value system,
Gandharva Ashram or sowing, the next where u co habitate, live in a family system, give birth….
Atharva Ashram where you watch the growth and abundance of what u sowed.
And finally Sanyas Ashram…where u harvest and distribute the produce, pass on the knowledge u attained…detaching from all u did in the last 3 stages…

Looks like ancient magic runes. There is few called seed, growing, harvest…
Share you opinion that mostly everyone has a unique & specific talent. Maybe it is not as significant, but it forces to admire.

So true. There was a time when I lived life fearlesly, embracing change, and the words came before the wisdom, but as soon as I found myself a safe, predictable existence, I lost the gift…

c] growth: there is a time in which the work writes itself, freely, at the bottom of the author’s soul …
…. In the case of literature, for example, the book influences the writer, and vice versa.

This is the item I loved to read most :o)
because, when I read “growth”, I expected that this would be the “exterior” time of growth: finally sitting down and writing.
but this “silent” phase in this creative process is the actual growth …. I wonder what this “invisible process means for the soul….
it is a time in which “the work changes the creator and vice versa.”

d] the harvest: the moment when man manifests on a conscious plane that which he sowed and allowed to grow. Without fear and with great discipline, he understands that he must work from dawn to dusk, until the work is finished.

Ha! harvest ….
it looks much more like a second “exterior growth” phase that can be quite uncomfortable …. :o), but
where, again, there is a chance of transformation and influence for both, the creation and the creator? :o)

the beauty of writing 2 is that it provides a new view for me to look at being creative, and that it weighs the stages in a different way. In this chapter, looking inside and understanding the importance and effect of the inside phase just clearly shows me how much I tried to “be creative” by just aiming for “producing”.

Thanks :o)

Sharing your own soul: a brave idea, to risk being rejected or betrayed or loved. In the natural process where is the courage developed for bravery, and where does the will come from to be courageous? How much failure and hardship makes or breaks an artist or someone who cares to love? Are you being selfish if you are selective about who you share your soul with? Should sharing your soul be a collective event or a personal matter? When we share our soul in the manner we do so, is this our way of fullfilling our mission on earth?

Thank you for this, it comes at the right time! I had similar thoughts and feelings a few years ago, when I wrote this small prose peace about the sowing season in the writing process: http://www.creavity.de/texte_fragment.html

Today, however, I think I understand much better what it means for me as a writer. It has to do with what you say above: “if he tries to imitate or control his inspiration, he will never obtain that which he desires. He must allow his life to sow the fertile soil of his unconscious.” Finding your true literary voice and the stories it wants to tell is not easy, especially when the brain keeps interfering – but I guess it must be done ;-)

this is really a gift, looks like an Easter-Egg:
to characterize the process and name its steps for us. This is so helpful for me to become more aware about the creative process and its stages.
Thanks, paulo <3

a] ploughing the field & interior revolution …

it looks to me that "negative" events in life initiate an interior revolution. this might hurt a lot :o)
maybe the ploughing is more like an earth quake, or a volcano eruption.
but I now begin to better understand why after negative, harsh events, I always have had an intense phase of creativity. Indeed, all my wrong assumptions that I had collected just fell into pieces. tough events make someone vulnerable and open – like a ploughed field.

b] sowing & which things will be important in the future

So true … . everything that I did not understand why it happened and I was discontent turned out to be important in the future.
Sometimes it looks to me that events occur as circles
that starts in life and we do not understand, but one day, it will close…. It is nice to look back with this idea in mind and see how unconsciousness comes in and suddenly it has its own beauty and "right" to exist. Never looked at it in such a way :o) I have been always hassling to work through it and pull it into the conscious realm.

The growth period is the “worst”, it’s hard to wait when we are excited about seeing the final product!

For example, as a reader, I couldn’t wait to this second part, always checking, “did Paulo write it already? will he post it today???”

Lol… it’s a matter of trust, isn’t it?

Trust in me, baby, give me time, gimme time, um gimme time.
I heard somebody say, oh, “The older the grape,
Sweeter the wine, sweeter the wine.”

Oh, my love is like a seed, baby, just needs time to grow,
It’s growing stronger day by day, yeah,
That’s the price you’ve got to pay.

Abraços, Paulo! Thank you so much, I love it!

P.S.2: hehe, just kidding…

P.S.3: not! :D

Dear Paulo I just finished my first book a week ago. I wrote it following the rules in my heart and I’m glad to see now that those rules are the same that you wrote in here. Sometimes I’m scared of showing what I wrote, but I realized that people can see there my soul and is not that bad, is actually very rewarding…

Can you, I and all who lives for it, continue to write and be allways illuminated by the inspiration spark! :)

Good luck with your book Sophie. I think it takes great courage to write and share what’s in your soul. All my life I’ve had the urge to write but I hold myself back and still have a fear of my writing being read publicly. I don’t fear the criticism, I think I’m not brave to reveal the real me.

Thank you for offering us your wisdom. I feel privileged for having ‘lived’ here together in the Blog, continuously, obsessively, enriching our .. minds, knowledge and ‘subconscious’ too. It is in every passing moment that we become a new-born soul. It is in experiencing life intensively and fully that we follow the Butterfly’s way to opening our wings. May God bless you and give you the strength to offer your wisdom through your books to as many people as possible on our Earth and then ‘HIS WILL BE DONE AS IN HEAVEN’. Amen.

Thank you for this wonderful creative process.
I have been writing on my experiences on the quest, but more so now than ever, I am seeing that everything in the universe is on its own ‘time’
Even though I’m writing on experiences I lived through, it’s not fiction, still, I feel that I had to give it some time and not be worried about writing and finishing it fast, because I cannot force such a thing, but soon I am sure I will get to the place where it will be the right time to complete it.

Thank you again, this is Wonderful to read!
Lots of love

THE CREATIVE PROCESS ALWAYS DEPENDENT ON THE DEGREE OF YOUR CONFIDENCE

Return the earth (prepare), sow (ask a good which resists prepared everything: He knows), make your heat (underground, inside where is the grain: you radiating like the sun to make this germ), baste with water “foster”, do not invade by weeds , ask an aid for the harvest : le “moissonneur” can help you , then ask his help (ask and you will get) but especially SHARE THE FRUITS OF YOUR HARVEST

RECEIVE AND GIVE – GIVE AND RECEIVE …

THANK HIM FOR HAVING SOMEONE WHO WILL HELP YOU , WHICH IS ALWAYS BY YOUR SIDE , AND BY ALL THE TIME/WEATHER (GUARDIAN ANGEL OF MY HEART! ) UNDER THE LOOK WELL ENSURING AND LOVING OF YOUR MOTHER WHO TENDERLY LOOK AT EACH OF YOUR GESTURES AND HELP YOU SOMETIMES OF HER ENCOURAGEMENT.

And I sing in my field:

” listening , listening ô my heart, do you hear the sounds new;

look , look my soul this great Light since my heart knows how to listen , i see ;

feel , yes feel ô my being the heat of that sweet fire and quench your “thirst” to this water ‘foster’ “

This is like a gift for me today; for my one goal in life since I was but a child was to be a writer. The whole passage spoke to me and has respawned itself within my subconscious mind – to help me to write my own stories and decribe what is hidden within my own soul. I am inspired to wait for the correct time to write. To forget the past stories and move forward to a higher place of thinking and writing. To write something that is worth all of the time and energy.
