I’m not mad

by Paulo Coelho on April 25, 2010

Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possibility of cheating. It is either good or bad.
Have no fear of perfection-you’ll never reach it. Mistakes are almost always of a sacred nature. Never try to correct them. On the contrary: rationalize them, understand them thoroughly. After that, it will be possible for you to sublimate them.

The first man to compare the cheeks of a young woman to a rose was a poet; the first to repeat it was an idiot.

The difference between false memories and true ones is the same as for jewels: it is always the false ones that look the most real, the most brilliant.

At the age of six years I wanted to be a chef. At the age of seven I wanted to be Napoleon. My ambitions have continued to grow at the same rate ever since. Every morning when I awake, the greatest of joys is mine: that of being Salvador Dali. There are some days when I think I’m going to die from an overdose of satisfaction.

I do not paint a portrait to look like the subject, rather does the person grow to look like his portrait.
Many people do not reach their eighties because they spend too much time in their forties.

The only difference between me and a madman is that I am not mad.

The honesty of the art, the drawing. It speaks to my soul this thought, in a way that I wouldn’t describe now, it would be like a segmentation of the feeling, because of the so bitter explanations. Just filling with the truth of this thought.

“The only difference between a madman and me, is that I am not mad.” I read this years ago in Bruges, in a Dali’s drawing exhibition. It is something that I liked to remember, smiling everytime about it, and I liked to tell from time to time to the others, I still do, if you don’t mind, together with the other things I found, once again answering to my present needs. It is true you know, we are one. Some of us, anyway. You speak about my life in the most immediate way. I remember a video on the internet, something also funny, the power of the thoughts, a man who was looking in a book to an elephant, dreaming that one day he could reach to see a real elephant, and in the next minute an elephant appeared for real in his small room. What would be our world without this delays between the thinking and happening? was the next sentence of the commentator. Will you be my elephant Paulo? I am also walking on an elephants road, did you know that? I am the lost baby elephant seen many years ago on the Discovery channel.

Painting portraits without following the exact traces of a face it happened to me, persons important for my life, for the moments I was living or for the future, coming out from the canvas, the pain in an eye, a palm forbiding, black lashes and white horses manes, pale lips and sorrow, spoked about me. Mistakes are of a sacred nature indeed.

There are days I feel not real – I feel surreal.

In his own words to Alain Bosquet : “I am a supreme swine. The symbol of perfection is a pig.The pig makes his way with Jesuit cunning, but he never balks in the middle of the crap in our era.I feed my crap to the Daliists. Everybody’s satisfied. All is honky dory. Actually, those climbers are the finest imaginable.”

The master even in dialogue. To those who find solace in their own sanctuaries to “regurgitate” the pious sanctity of those who admire their own erections of the ego, you climbers are the finest imaginable. In his own words of course.

The hardest working man in Show Business isn’t “Butane James” It’s “Dali”

Ser você mesmo é a maior ambição. És o próprio troféu. Ser uma pessoa única, não uma única pessoa. A ciência unifica, a arte personifica..

Paulo, trust me we all are mad :), but there is this quantitative difference among all of us.
I also believe that the most passionate people are the most mad ones too…So, recheck if we are mad or not?

Mankind has always been driven, always looking for a leader or a leader, gone are the days of conquerors, leaving only creators. And again we are looking for someone to go. Maybe we crazy?
