Character of the week: Buddha

by Paulo Coelho on July 25, 2010

A dog is not considered a good dog because he is a good barker. A man is not considered a good man because he is a good talker.

Ambition is like love, impatient both of delays and rivals.

However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act on upon them? An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

The foot feels the foot when it feels the ground.

The tongue like a sharp knife… Kills without drawing blood.

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.

Siddhārtha Gautama, regarded as the Supreme Buddha ( The time of his birth and death are uncertain: most early 20th-century historians dated his lifetime as c. 563 BCE to 483 BCE)

I am happy to know that at least you know the birth place of Lord Buddha is NEPAL. I am amazed to see thousands of people still don’t know that birth place of Buddha is Nepal. India is lying the world. Indian media often say that Buddha was born in India which is Not True. I sincerely request you to help others know the truth.
Thank You!

Always – I repeat – ALWAYS – you say things to me just when I need to hear them the most; just when life and everything about it seems low; just when I feel like quitting; just when I feel let down by everything I ever stood for, believed in, loved, revered. You seem to suddenly come out of the oblivion and SPEAK TO ME. Whenever my heart is aching/hurting, you bring it to life. You make it alive again. I am back to BELIEVING. Thank you for being a part of my life, Paulo. Thank you for being the voice between me and Him.

Obrigada por TUDO.

Buddha tells me to talk less and smile more! No wait a minute. It was Santosh who told me this. Smiling. Nevertheless, Santosh probably know more about Buddha than any of us here. Thank you for sharing your faith with us. We Westerners needs you Easterners. Oops.. did I talk too much again.

some people are waiting for your sweet words, so never ever bother about talking more.

u westerners have given us esaterners means to live a better material life, so happy to see that now we all join our hands togather for a life rich on the outsdie and inside too. others may know more about life and times of buddha, but whoever is pure in heart ( like u are ) knows the heart of buddha, is enshrined in the heart of buddha.

Currently I am listening to Osho talk about Buddha….he was one of the greatest soul ever. The best part, he was not preachy. Moreover, his work will always remain contemporary, always apt for every generation! Thanks Paulo for sharing these enlightening words….I think I am drawn towards Buddha’s work more than ever :)…. Thanks for always inspiring us! God bless..

PAOLO COELHO

Perhaps we should begin by asking you
All the things we would know – to inhabit
One tiny piece of your immortal soul –
Lesser becoming greater, destroying
Objects of desire, by our obsession.

Consider this: whether this fate is true
OM, the culmination of life – in its
Ending, giving yourself to all, a role
Lived by few; altruism wrought new, bringing
Hope, health, new dimensions to possessions
Or is it just a dream – wish fulfillment ?

Paolo, do not spread yourself to all sides
Coelho is a revered name, world wide;
Pedestals everywhere are yours: decide.

enlightening words! Thank you for sharing them.

When I read your books, Mr. Coelho, I am amazed by how much you know about the light. What experience brought you so much insight and knowledge? Do you know many people who share that knowledge?

Maretha July 26, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Like all seekers, we are drawn to discover what’s out there without knowing yet if we have the courage to face it. Like all sincere seekers of the Light, we are also drawn to discover what’s in here (the heart) without knowing yet if we have the courage to face it. The discovery is death (that’s where the courage is needed) with a resurrection into the Light and Love(that keeps us on a path of self-enquiry forever…)

great attitude, i must say, i mean almost fitting a buddha ! but tell me does it not go against the spirit of creativity, where one allows a little discontent, a little stress, a little unsatisfaction, unthankfullness for the things as they are, then only creativity comes about, no ??

and ahha!! now we have heirarchy even in buddhahood – supreme buddha ??

for all his great thoughts, what did Gautama create other than thoughts, what great things got created, inspired by Buddha.

and what reply has siddhartha / gautama has for the new born child whom he abandoned when that child was only 1 day old. The child understands, his father like all fathers was restless, looking for this or that; but after Buddha attained, why could he not come back, completed his family obligations first and then gone back to his bunch of followers. Buddha is unforgiven !

Dear Devil’s Advocate

Buddha doesnt need our unforgiveness or forgiveness :)
As far as little boy Rahul is concerned he got initiated in teaching at such a young age and attained the peaceful state as far as Buddha’s wife yashodhara she also attained the same peace;pls put some effort to know these simple facts about Buddha on your own rather than subcribing to hesrseys..
with all Luv & compassion for your devil tendancy:)

Beautiful sayings !

‘Fa bi-ayyi alaa’ ei rabbikuma tukazzibaan ?’
(and how many favours of God can you deny ? )

Truely,we cannot even think of how many blessings the Creator has bestowed upon us.It is is only when something is taken away from us that we realise it’s worth !

So be grateful indeed for everything.

Besides gratitude multiplies blessings and happiness :)

‘Ambition is like love, impatient both of delays and rivals’.

I can remember, AMBITION has been my worst enemy when I was 18 years old!! I did not have enough patience. But to become a pianist, talent is not enough… I thought that the years in front of me with hard study were .. AEONS and that I was going to miss the … pleasures of life!! Silly me! What pleasures, since I have ‘killed’ my dream, the real ME? ;-]

Today, I AM THANKFUL for being alive, for my children and grand-children, my good and bad experiences in life and for the LOVE I feel and the LOVE given to me, by my family, my friends, you, dearest Paulo Coelho, the Warriors of the Light friends and most of all I THANK GOD and I surrender to HIS WILL.
LOVE,

Now I notice the symbol…next Buddha.Let me share my poem…
Solstice

By Alexandra Mănescu

I was eagerly wainting
The blinding hot light
But
Hows thats
Heavy snow falls in my heart?
So
I start walking on a winding path penitently
I hear the air
Singing an angelic refrain
The snow become drops of water
Tinkling
My feet feel the warm earth
Invitation to dance
Among graceful sylphid
I dance in circle
The concentric dance
Attracts me like a typhoon towards heights
I reach the peak of the Light
My dress is a white
Lotus flower.

yeah !! seeker

what we hear about buddha is all hearsay my freind, for written records were not started till much later, winners write history, my freind. please don’t tick me off so easily, i know the buddha, but accepting even buddha’s words without a ‘fight’ is not a wols way. about rahul and yashodhara, forget what hearsay or hsitory tells us, be uashodhara and be rahul and feel. at age of 12 years when it is not age even to start playing around, has not known sex ( remember buddha was overfed with sex ), what ??

desist from taking as facts what is presented to u as facts, even statitical figures can be manipulated to present ‘coloured’ facts.

I reached the same exact conclusion a few days ago dear Aditya…when I was reading another blog. Theories are just theories, so we must trust our hearts and listen to the signs the Lord is sending us. The Lord sends us signs through in many different ways and it will be up to us to distinguish the truth. Budha mentions this “Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.” I think this includes the love and relationship we develop with God.

Love and light
