Promoting the devil

by Paulo Coelho on July 30, 2010

A boy was walking to buy bread when the mayor of the city crossed the street.

‘The reason he is so powerful, is because, he’s made pact with the devil,’ – a very devout woman in the street told the boy, and he was intrigued.

While traveling to another town, the boy saw a beautiful corn field. He asked who was he owner as soon as he arrived at his destination

‘All this land belongs to the same man. I’d say the Devil had a hand in that.’ – answered one of the villagers.

Later the same day, a beautiful woman walked past the boy. A priest also saw her and said aloud:

‘That woman was sent by Satan!’

From then on, the boy decide to seek the Devil out. One day he managed to see him face to face.

‘They say you can make people powerful, rich, and beautiful.’

‘To be totally honest, this is not true’ replied the Devil. ‘You have just been listening to the views of those who are trying to promote me.’

LA GENTE VIVE PENSANDO QUE LAS COSAS MUY BUENAS QUE LES PASA A OTROS EXCLUSIVAMENTE TIENEN QUE VER CON PACTOS CON EL DIABLO Y SIN DARSE CUENTA LO ESTAN PROMOVIENDO SIN SABER BIEN LAS COSAS YA QUE LAS COSAS BUENAS SIEMPRE BIENEN DE DIOS Y POR ESFUERZO DE QUIENES LA POSEEN NO POR IR POR CAMINOS EQUIVOCADOS TENGAMOS CUIDADO DE NO PROMOVERLO Y CONSTRUYAMOS JUNTOS UNA PROMOCION POR DIOS

Estranho!Parece q li isto antes.

Haahaa…fantastic.. I thought the name of the devil woulda been used as a distraction technique to all the good work or good fortune that people may have but .. promotion.. v nice touch.. why else would he need to beg us to ‘let him help us’… combine that with the fact that alot of people are petty jealous and lazy.. and presto… a recipe for selling your soul.. Thank you Paulo xo

But the devil is never honest, so why would he tell the boy that “to be honest”? The first hole I have ever seen in a Paulo story.

LEILA TARUASHVILI September 13, 2010 at 5:16 pm

That is not the hole. Usually people who are not honest are tend to start their conversation with phrase “To be honest” , aren’t they?

Good and Evil are not opposing forces because Good in itself is an all-encompassing force and is completely Self-sustainable it is the driving force behind order in all aspects of life including the planet. Unnatural Evil is a state of severe instability, unbalanced chaos which is in sharp contrast to life and the continuation thereof and Unnatural Evil will ultimately destroy itself because it is not self sustainable in any shape or form. We need to distinguish between the types of Evil, which exist in this world. The first and best known of Evils are Satanic or unnatural evil, which is outside of the natural balance and order of the cosmos. The other Evil which is also referred to as Natural Evil is one which is part of the DIVINE and cosmic balance and harmony, it is the positive duality of Good and Natural Evil that sustains the Universe and all life. Unnatural evil falls outside this natural order of things, are not part of natural duality for it is by no means self sustainable, and does not promote progress or renewal. Good and Natural Evil cannot exist without one another, however Good in its all-encompassing way can and does in certain places exist without un-natural evil.

A warrior of the light knows his defects. But he also knows his qualities.

Some of his companions complain all the time: “the others have more chances than we have.”

They may be right, but a warrior does not let that paralyze him, and tries to make the most of his virtues.
He knows that the power of the gazelle is the ability of her legs. The power of the seagull lies in her sure aim at striking the fish. He has learned that a tiger is unafraid of the hyena because he is aware of his own strength.
A warrior seeks to know what he can rely on. He always checks his equipment, comprised of three things: faith, hope and love.

If these three are present, he does not hesitate to move forward.

Reading this makes me remember a time where patriarchal society thought it would be evil to ‘allow’ women to vote, go to university (or in some instances, take part in any schooling) if they wanted, or work outside of the home. Women did not make important decisions in most families or self-govern (where I grew up).

Thankful for choices. Thinking about oppression and the embracing of, or fear of, change.

Thankyou Paulo, Love to All,
Jane xo

Instead of devil/satan fill in god, jesus, vishnu, buddha, alah or mohammed. They have a very good promotianal team.

like there’s one theory in physics everything has got equals and opposite reactions then only things will be on balanced. well frankly i dont know who created devils or how they are formed but there must be reason for god to equalize this world of spirituality and deeds.

Everything good comes from God, God made us to be like Him. What I feel in those expressions atributing to the devil what is evidently God’s work is jealosy or the cowardice to risk and get what you want.

I really like this piece of writing, it has a really good essence in it.. or so I say.
But I then wonder, I always keep wondering, if god created everything, like everything that is, the world and all creatures, even if its because of evolution, he then also created the devil, and then believers say, no he didn’t, he created the Angel Lucifer, who later Defected to be “bad” (whatever that is) and so God didn’t create the devil, but then I read this(after trying to find an answer to this question:
“First of all, we have to be clear when someone says that God created everything. The Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth, the spiritual realm, animals, etc., (Gen. 1:1-31; Ezek. 28:13-17). But, God has not created that which does not exist. This is not a trick answer. We have to realize that God knows all things, actual as well as potential.”
So if god knows all things, and its potential, why, why create an Angel with this kind of potential. It is so confusing, also interesting though.

Anyway, I wish you a very good day :) if you read this paulo, you are my favourite writer, keep it going, I really liked the plot of ‘The Winner Stands Alone’, thanks.
Greetz.

bc God gives everyone and everything a choice. He made us to be free, not to be programmed robots. everyone has the potential to be “bad” bc theres only one God and only He is perfect. :)

Well, without darkness we cannot appreciate the light. Without the devil we cannot fully appreciate the goodness of God or indeed the goodness and the light within humankind. Light and darkness, good and evil will co-exist until we have learned what we need to. We need that frisson, that spark, that resistance, that motivation existing when the two forces opposing forces are present. Nameste :)

Hi Sarah, i was going to write that God created everything positive and negative, because one without knowing first ,can not know another. Then i read your reply and agree with you 100%.
