1 min reading: Manual for climbing mountains

by Paulo Coelho on August 11, 2010

Espanol> Manual para subir montañas
Portugues> Manual para subir montanhas

Aosta Valley, Montblanc

A] Choose the mountain you want to climb: don’t pay attention to what other people say, such as “that one’s more beautiful” or “this one’s easier”. You’ll be spending lots of energy and enthusiasm to reach your objective, so you’re the only one responsible and you should be sure of what you’re doing.

B] Know how to get close to it: mountains are often seen from far off – beautiful, interesting, full of challenges. But what happens when we try to draw closer? Roads run all around them, flowers grow between you and your objective, what seemed so clear on the map is tough in real life. So try all the paths and all the tracks until eventually one day you’re standing in front of the top that you yearn to reach.

C] Learn from someone who has already been up there:
no matter how unique you feel, there is always someone who has had the same dream before you and ended up leaving marks that can make your journey easier; places to hang the rope, trails, broken branches to make the walking easier. The climb is yours, so is the responsibility, but don’t forget that the experience of others can help a lot.

D] When seen up close, dangers are controllable
: when you begin to climb the mountain of your dreams, pay attention to the surroundings. There are cliffs, of course. There are almost imperceptible cracks in the mountain rock. There are stones so polished by storms that they have become as slippery as ice. But if you know where you are placing each footstep, you will notice the traps and how to get around them.

E] The landscape changes, so enjoy it:
of course, you have to have an objective in mind – to reach the top. But as you are going up, more things can be seen, and it’s no bother to stop now and again and enjoy the panorama around you. At every meter conquered, you can see a little further, so use this to discover things that you still had not noticed.

F] Respect your body: you can only climb a mountain if you give your body the attention it deserves. You have all the time that life grants you, as long as you walk without demanding what can’t be granted. If you go too fast you will grow tired and give up half way there. If you go too slow, night will fall and you will be lost. Enjoy the scenery, take delight in the cool spring water and the fruit that nature generously offers you, but keep on walking.

G] Respect your soul:
don’t keep repeating “I’m going to make it”. Your soul already knows that, what it needs is to use the long journey to be able to grow, stretch along the horizon, touch the sky. An obsession does not help you at all to reach your objective, and even ends up taking the pleasure out of the climb. But pay attention: also, don’t keep saying “it’s harder than I thought”, because that will make you lose your inner strength.

H] Be prepared to climb one kilometer more: the way up to the top of the mountain is always longer than you think. Don’t fool yourself, the moment will arrive when what seemed so near is still very far. But since you were prepared to go beyond, this is not really a problem.

I] Be happy when you reach the top
: cry, clap your hands, shout to the four winds that you did it, let the wind – the wind is always blowing up there – purify your mind, refresh your tired and sweaty feet, open your eyes, clean the dust from your heart. It feels so good, what was just a dream before, a distant vision, is now part of your life, you did it!

J] Make a promise: now that you have discovered a force that you were not even aware of, tell yourself that from now on you will use this force for the rest of your days. Preferably, also promise to discover another mountain, and set off on another adventure.

L] Tell your story: yes, tell your story! Give your example. Tell everyone that it’s possible, and other people will then have the courage to face their own mountains.

Ascension is more interesting than reaching the top… “don’t pay attention to what other people say, such as “that one’s more beautiful” or “this one’s easier”. You’ll be spending lots of energy and enthusiasm to reach your objective, so you’re the only one responsible and you should be sure of what you’re doing.”Thank you, Paulo. I love you.

As human beings we tend to be performance oriented : WE WANT TO REACH THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN

but, THE LONG ROAD TO FREEDOM RUNS THROUGH MANY VALLEYS OF THE SHADOWS OF DEATH UNTIL WE REACH THE MOUNTAIN TOP OF OUR DESIRES.

and once we have reached the mountain top, there will be more valleys of the shadows of death and more mountain tops….. till we die.

if we are truly courageous, we will honour the dark nights of our soul. we can only find new light in the dark. let us validate EVERY experiece in life : valleys and mountain tops.

UPON THE DARKEST NIGHT,
THE FLAME OF LOVE STARTS BURNING IN MY HEART………

The highest I’ve climbed on foot is about 3500 Meter, a mountain in Iran, the name I unfortunately forgotten.

Our guide took us to that area and asked us, if we would like to go up, otherwise, we would just stay at the half of the mountain and make a light round tour. Three of us wanted to stay, because they are not so young any more. My husband and I decided to go. So we rested at the half of the mountain overnight and broke off the next morning. On the whole way, our guide, a local, leaped in front of us like an antelope, and we both followed slowly and silently. Although the mountain is not steep, there were no real road, and if we speak or go too quickly, our hearts began to beat crazily and we would be short of breath. But slowly and silently, we reached the top, where snow exists even in that hot desert weather.

And 2009, we were in Tibet, visited the Mount Everest base camp, which is over 5000 meter high.

We were taken there by car. Coz as tourists, within such a short time, our bodies won’t get use to the height for any demanding physical sport.

So all I could remember was sitting in the car, watching the endless mountain road going snake like upwards, repeatedly facing almost bare stone walls (with that altitude no big trees would grow.), monotonous and boring, this was very depressing. And for hours we couldn’t get any clear view of the mountains at all, because we were IN the Himalaya mountains. Only once, as we stood on a look-out (a platform on a peak), we got the panorama view of the whole area, which is breath-taking.

And as we arrived the base camp, the Mount Everest looks much smaller and gentler as I imagined, although the snow peak was still very fascinating.
The reason, I guess, is that we didn’t look at a 8848 Meter high Mountain from the sea level, instead, we looked at it at a height of already over 5000. However, if somebody is not careful enough or didn’t respect his body signal, he could already be terribly sick or even die from high altitude syndrome at this level.

It somehow reflects our ways in life to achieve goals, or conquer difficulties.

Sometimes the road seems repeating itself’;
Sometimes you have to go back in order to go forth again;
Sometimes you can only see walls;
But if the direction is correct, you always get closer.

I have done a lot of things in my life that surprised me. Went on a missions trip to Nigeria and preached to strangers while a translator translated. Sold books door to door in New York less than a year after 9-11. Fostered my niece and nephew when they were taken away from my sister. Bought a house during the recession, then remodeled the entire house with my husband with solely our 4 hands, and then sold it for profit (still during the recession). Now I’ve made myself into a professional blogger even though other people thought it was a crazy idea. I do crazy stuff. Stuff I wouldn’t expect myself to do. Because I believe in myself. I climb mountains.

There is another moving essay written by Samuel Ullman (1840-1924) about youth where he says that ones age is not the age of the body but of ones heat and soul.

My mountain was so scary I thought I would never see the beauty and success it had to offer. I made it to the bottom a few years back and wanted to give up so badly but by that time my fighting nature was enhanced by the many messages the God was sending me to get up and climb. “Climb ,, climb like you have fought to get here. If there is one thing you have shown me, he said, was “you have the fight in you, now let me show you the beauty, peace and love you battled so hard to win.”

Yes I climbed the mountain the hard way against all odds. My determination kept the bread on the table for my family and others if need be. My struggle came fruitful having put my children on the right path and give them the best of education and work. Seeing me helped them to learn not to give up their dreams and pursue them at all aspects till the end. My strength and acceptance of all odds that accompanied my journey for the last thirty or more years, put me on where I am today. Yet I can’t say that all my mountains were mounted. At my age, still more to come and still climbing them with strength and hope. It’s a long journey, eh!

I couldn’t agree more

Paulo, I so love all of your works! It’s my first time visiting this blog but I have been reading your books. I always save a little amount of my money just to collect them. They’re worth buying than clothes and vanity stuffs.

By the way, I’m so moved by this blog. I am a journalism student but I stopped and work and about to lose my spirit and passion with my greatest dream- to become a broadcast journalist/documentarist. I am from Philippines. Life has been so tough to me that I had to stop and earn money. I had to work even if it means danger since I’m working night shift from sun down to sun up as call center agent. I just enjoy life every payday but the rest of the day sucks (you know.. taking calls). I want to graduate but I’m losing hope. I want to write a novel but my schedule hinders it. I sleep at daytime and stayed awake at night. I am nocturnal by profession and I hate it. They say, life is what you make it but not on my case. My father made this choice for reasons I cannot understand. I want to have a share of your inspiring words. Please email me sir. : (. If I cannot hear any consolation from my father, may I hear it from you before I surrender my passion.

Abrazo
