10 SEC READ: Teachers & students (ENG, PORT, ESPA)

by Paulo Coelho on August 27, 2010

________________________________________________
Is the bird alive?

The young man was at the end of his training, soon he would go on to be a teacher. Like all good pupils, he needed to challenge his teacher and to develop his own way of thinking. He caught a bird, placed it in one hand and went to see his teacher.
‘Teacher, is this bird alive or dead?’

His plan was the following: if his teacher said ‘dead’, he would open his hand and the bird would fly away. If the answer was ‘alive’, he would crush the bird between his fingers; that way the teacher would be wrong whichever answer he gave.
‘Teacher, is the bird alive or dead?’ he asked again.

‘My dear student, that depends on you,’ was the teacher’s reply
_______________________________________________________________

Marie-Christine

Paulo, c’est pour toi.
avec tout mon amour.

Yes, God gave us free will and everything around us, depends on what we will do… It’s great gift, but we should use it, being responsible…

What a lovely image, it conveyed a lot of positive energy.
It is so nice to have the net at home back!
The story made me laugh and taught the disciple the infinite possibilities that exist in the universe. No matter how wise or prepared we think we are the unexpected is waiting for us around the corner.
Have a beautiful day.

We all need challenges to develop – masters as well as students. Challenging one another they both can increase their abilities and wisdom.

Jojo August 30, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Reading this brings me to the gift of God … freedom, power to make my own choices. The Master, the Teacher for me is my God, and he lets me free to become as He is or not. Funny because that is how I feel now … time to “teach” in the sense of acting, living knowing that the apprentice process is done “for me”. Time to leave the bench now and put my skills at work … The power to create is given to all … but again, create has different meaning, and for this student, for me, he still has to learn … still caught in basic mental activity … has to stay a bit in class to learn to silence his Ego.

Love, Jojo.

Olta Ana August 31, 2010 at 4:40 pm

I agree with you my dear Jojo!
By the way, I m so glad that you now have opened your wings and are ready to fly. Ready to give much more of your light to the others with love. I am happy I was one of your students ;)

I think the same. If you want to learn you’ve got to be humble. How can you pretend to be above the light that made you see before you’ve experienced the path He did at least. You just can’t.
Annie mentioned rainbow’s colors and I think that all of our lights, gifts and talents are like special different lights for each of us. It might be the same for the student and the master but, still one must never forget that it is needed humility to learn and learning leads to humility. :)
But in the other hand I’d congratulate that student for the courage he had on finding such a trick for his master even though to me that was such a brilliant idea.
His first mistake was on idealizing his master. I don’t think that being a master means being unmistakable and maybe by getting above him he’d be ready to teach, by probably being better than his own master. Well… there he got a surprise…

Yes there is freedom to make your own choices, your own mistakes. A good master will show you the way, but he won’t be the perfect mind where you’ll get all the right information. I believe that this is how it works isn’t it?
That kind of master you will only find in God, but his words mostly lie in silence and signs through love to find.

Anyway lets give a brake to the student, he chose his own way even though I find it cruel crushing the poor innocent sweet soft little beautiful birdie… :’(

Challenging your master is all fine, so long as one does not think of oneself as superior to master, challenging to learn, learn some more !

master being a master, is a master not for nothing; one cannot trick a master, or can one.

so master paulo – how is your world vision shaping up. yesterday saw a documentary on planet earth, one od teh discovery series, dfeels so sad that we humans will be destroyng what took billions of years to make. humans and tehir greed for more and more. hills are being sold for mining, jungles for …./ and to TOP IT ALL< THE WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION IS BEING DONE IN THE NAME OF 'DEVELOPMENT', development of the economic status of promotors at teh cost of the fragile ecology. 'development' my foot. before humans can decide what is development, let them understand what they have.

the teacher finds a solution that goes beyond the right-wrong logic.
I see the nasty idea of the student (to crash the bird, just to be right). his answer “throws the ball back” to the student and there he sits with his nastiness and the full responsibility.

enjoyed so much reading your comments.

the whole story reflects so well a communication pattern that I have observed so often.
it is so “simple,” the dynamics look always the same. hm, to respond just in a second like the teacher… wish I was born with it :o)

Yeray August 29, 2010 at 11:17 pm

This confused me a little… my mind was full, too many things to say..

if he chose DEATH, THE BIRD would LIVE
if he chose LIFE, the bird would DIE..
PARADOX IN ALL ITS MAJESTY
now that was such an unlucky bird.. i hope it found a way to fly away..

SO, Choose life or death?? that’s the question here…

if the other chooses LIFE for us , we live their life, which is DEATH for us..
if the other choosed DEATH for us , SO he cannot have any influence on us , WE live, IT S LIFE for us, as we want it!

the Master said he would choose, a metaphor for God to give us the great power of choice to live life as we want it..

In the end, everything, just EVERYTHING IS a matter of life or death.. Is the bird alive or dead? i hope the apprentice chooses Life, and let the bird and himself fly..

Love and Gratitude

besos..

clarisa August 30, 2010 at 1:52 am

There is no need to challenge the master! I’m not sure where this idea came from but I guess some people need to feel that everything and everyone in life needs to be dominated.

THELMA August 29, 2010 at 6:10 pm

..’he needed to challenge his teacher and to develop his own way of thinking’.

It is said that a good teacher creates students that become better than himself. He gives all his knowledge and experience and he guides his students to …. develop their own way of thinking! By doing this he … develops his own skills of … mind-reading! Mind reading is usually telepathy, empathy, but a good guessing too!

The school of life
It is there to push you forward and beyond
It digs deep down to the core of the matter – your soul -
It does not need any words – it goes beyond that -
It is cosy
It is like a promise that makes children happy
It is re-assuring and comforting
It teaches you discipline-task and to believe in yourself.
It turns around your obsessions into strength.
It is humane
It is international
It breaks all barriers -religions, ages, races and genders-
It is a different kind of war.
It is the battle against the truth
It is tough
It is full of wisdom
It is plain common sense
It teaches you appreciation in the smallest task
It is simple and very fulfilling
It is the essence of being
It is you in the making
It is a gift that is appreciated.
It is the school of life.
It is a soul-searching delight.

It is a commitment.
