By the river Piedra I sat down and wept

by Paulo Coelho on September 1, 2010

One doesn’t love in order to do what is good or to help or to protect someone. If we act that way, we are perceiving the other as a simple object, and we seeing ourselves as wise and generous persons. This has nothing to do with love. To love is to be in communion with the other and to discover in that other the spark of God.

You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen.

Every day, God gives us the sun – and also one moment in which we have the ability to change everything that makes us unhappy. Every day, we try to pretend that we haven’t perceived the moment, that it doesn’t exist – that today is the same as yesterday and will be the same as tomorrow. But if people really pay attention in their everyday lives, they will discover that magic moment. It may arrive in the instant when we are doing something mundane, like putting our front-door key in the lock; it may lie hidden in the quiet that follows the lunch hour or in the thousand and one things that all seems the same to us. But that moment exists – a moment when all the power of the stars becomes a part of us and enables us to perform miracles.

Joy is sometimes a blessing, but it is often a conquest. Our magic moment help us to change and sends us off in search of our dreams. Yes, we are going to suffer, we will have difficult times, and we will experience many disappointments – but all of this is transitory it leaves no permanent mark. And one day we will look back with pride and faith at the journey we have taken.

I could have. What does this phrase mean? At any given moment in our lives, there are certain things that could have happened but didn’t. The magic moments go unrecognized, and then suddenly, the hand of destiny changes everything.
But love is much like a dam: if you allow a tiny crack to form through which only a trickle of water can pass, that trickle will quickly bring down the whole structure, and soon no one will be able to control the force of the current.
Love is a trap. When it appears, we see only its light, not its shadows.

I’m going to fight for your love. There are some things in life that are worth fighting for to the end. You are worth it.

Dear Sir,
On second thoughts.. It reads that you do not love to do good. Yes, I agree. But we also do good to the person we are in love with to make him/her happy.
Even if our love is true … if it DOES NOT GET RECIPROCATED it is going to die. Although you may always feel love for that person..there is no outcome. Your heart is again in search for that someone who can fulfill this need to feel loved.

many magical moments have taken place in my life…through the smile of a professor, the respect from an officer, from the kind words of a stranger who seemed to know everything about my life without even knowing my own name. life is indeed magical if we allow it.

Love is a strong feeling that when it first enters there is no way to take it out of your heart. It is a strange burning sensation inside your soul. Nor the distance or another relationship will be able to vanish the true feeling of love.

By the River Piedra, I sat down and wept was the first ever book by Paulo that I have bought, then followed by The Alchemist. This book is really great. Some of the lines from the book helped and encouraged me during a time in my life when I almost lost hope. The book and its content had really placed a big mark in my life during that time. Thank you Paulo Coelho for writing this book as well as other of your works that are indeed considered as food for the soul. But above all, I thanked God for always being there for us and for bringing people such like you in this world.

Dear Paulo,
As usual, the things you write are marvellous and get right to the heart. I remember the first time I wrote to you after I had read o zahir. I would like to take this opportunity to invite to Lyon (France) to take part in our now worldwide move towards more humanité called Dailogues en Humanité the first week-end of July 2011. We invited but too late this year, officially. Dialogues in Humanity also take place from October 9th until the 12th in Salvador de Bahia with the theme Brechó Eco-solidário with Deborah Nunes and coordinated by Rede de Profissionais Solidários pela Cidadania at the University UNIFACS. Here is the link

Thank you again for all those messages that I read daily.
Best regards
Sophie

you just put my life in words!!!!!

I like the following from Paulo Coelho’s blog – kind of love I am looking for (Some how Paulo depicts/understands or put in words the things I like or I experience)

“One doesn’t love in order to do what is good or to help or to protect someone. If we act that way, we are perceiving the other as a simple object, and we seeing ourselves as wise and generous persons. This has nothing to do with love. To love is to be in communion with the other and to discover in that other the spark of God.

You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen.”

Everyone has their own concept of happiness. People are as happy as they make up their minds to be. Then there are some people who are unhappy about everything. They have everything and it is just not enough. Why are so many people in the First World taking so many drugs? They want to escape so bad. Why? Also, God sees so many people doing a constant balancing act, trying to keep the boat on an even keel. People who give so generously of themselves to keep the peace at home.It is a gift to be able see Christ in others and to find something good in a crappy day, To keep up the spirit and never quit.

I just couldn’t agree with you on this sir. Love is not so subjective that it always happens just between two persons.A man loves everyone and everything else around him.And at times there might be certain circumstances where a sacrifice could mean more than love.Rather to say a higher form of love.
