Character of the week: Rumi

by Paulo Coelho on September 2, 2010

If in thirst you drink water from a cup, you see God in it. Those who are not in love with God will see only their own faces in it

All day I think about it, then at night I say it. Where did I come from, and what am I supposed to be doing? I have no idea. My soul is from elsewhere, I’m sure of that, and I intend to end up there.

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.

Silence is an ocean. Speech is a river. Silence is the language of God, all else is poor translation.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you; Don’t go back to sleep. You must ask for what you really want; Don’t go back to sleep. People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch. The door is round and open. Don’t go back to sleep.

“When I am with you, we stay up all night.
When you’re not here, I can’t go to sleep.
Praise God for those two insomnias!
And the difference between them.”

Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.

Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Balkh, or Rumi (30 September 1207 – 17 December 1273), was a 13th-century Persian muslim poet, jurist, theologian, and Sufi mystic.

. .En fin dejo mi huella escrita.

I find it somehow distressing all these arguments whether Rumi is Persian or Turkish!
As everybody can read in Wikipedia he was born in a town in what today is Afghanistan some say in Tajikistan, he traveled the whole middle east.
Most of his writings are in Persian, though there are some in Arabic, and he spend most of his time in what is today Turkey..
I am sure he himself would not have liked to limit himself to a race or nation as one can clearly see form his wonderful universal message of love that shines from all his writings..
Rumi and his spirit are without border and belong to all of us, to all humanity..

Who’s a Turk and who’s a Balkhi?
Who’s a *Zangi and who’s a Rumi?
Where did I come from?
Where did all this poetry come from?
Yet somehow,
These poems are breathed into me.
And all this poetry,
Is simply pouring out of me..

Such truth and beauty this man found within the depth of himself,
as is possible for all of us.

Here is yet a quote from Rumi:

Humankind is being led along an evolving course, through this migration of intelligences, And though we seem to be sleeping, There is an inner wakefulness that directs the dream, And that will eventually startle us back to the truth of who we are. – Rumi

I found my favorite Rumi poem (which my father always encouraged) on the NY Subway.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
doesn’t make any sense.

(Sufi Poet Rumi)

Thank you for being you,
Anthea

This line especially stayed with me:

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

Because this is what I often find myself battling. What to let go of and what to keep for protection. Who can we trust but ourselves and can we even that?

Rumi & Sacred Love Poems

One Whisper of the Beloved

Lovers share a sacred decree
to seek the Beloved.
They …roll head over heels,
rushing toward the Beautiful One
like a torrent of water.

In truth, everyone is a shadow of the Beloved
Our seeking is His seeking,
Our words are His words.

At times we flow toward the Beloved
like a dancing stream.
At times we are still water
held in His pitcher.
At times we boil in a pot
turning to vapor
that is the job of the Beloved.

He breathes into my ear
until my soul
takes on His fragrance.
He is the soul of my soul
How can I escape?
But why would any soul in this world
want to escape from the Beloved?

He will melt your pride
making you thin as a strand of hair,
Yet do not trade, even for both worlds,
One strand of His hair.

We search for Him here and there
while looking right at Him.
Sitting by His side we ask,
“O Beloved, where is the Beloved?”

Enough with such questions!
Let silence take you to the core of life.

All your talk is worthless
When compared to one whisper
of the Beloved.

But why would any soul want to escape from the beloved?

My favorite lines:

“When I am with you, we stay up all night.

I thank God for the motive of that insomnias… What can I say… He’s my best friend and yes… I love him!

He is a Turkish sufi poet, a real master in Persian and Arabic languages.
Be with those who help your being.
Don’t sit with indifferent people, whose breath
comes cold out of their mouths.
Not these visible forms, your work is deeper.

A chunk of dirt thrown in the air breaks to pieces.
If you don’t try to fly,
and so break yourself apart,
you will be broken open by death,
when it’s too late for all you could become.

Leaves get yellow. The tree puts out fresh roots
and makes them green.
Why are you so content with a love that turns you yellow?

Hope u like this, too.

I had all those barriers and finally found some1 who helped to pull them all down and we experienced the most wonderful friendship and love until like the flowing river came something that disrupted the peace,I could get use to it like u said Mr Coelho but he couldn’t and left ayear ago today. How do u make someone understand that love is not always goin to be peaceful.I hope he is listening to the silence instead of keeping himself busy with work. A year of sleepless nights-how to stop this,I don’t know.

Dear Paulo,
your books have not changed my life, but the way I view it as a whole, & for that I grant you great thanks.

In addition, I believe that maybe if the world had a bit more of those like you who take the best & most pleasant of the others & present it to the world, maybe then we’d be living in that ideal loving world we were meant to preserve once it existed. To that too, thank you.

I really hope you read this.

I think he is a great philosophical, always loved his poems, amd I must confess I mostly heard about him since following Paulo Coelho. Is really one fo best poets in my opinion.I love the sentence:” Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it”.It fits to the former topic of the blog, ”By the River Piedra I Set Down and Wept”.And to many of us…
And I tell you that Saturday I viseted mom in country side, where she now lives. We went to walk on the fields, and at once I said to mom and niece: Stop bit, listen to that silence! Seem an oxymoron, but really it was a silence one could hear. The wind slowly blowing through the grass…
So I think is true : ”Silence is an ocean. Speech is a river. Silence is the language of God, all else is poor translation.”
