As a young man, the painter Henri Matisse used to pay a weekly visit to the great Renoir in his studio. When Renoir was afflicted by arthritis, Matisse began to visit him daily, taking him food, brushes, paints, but always trying to persuade the master that he was working too hard and needed to rest a little.

One day, noticing that each brushstroke made Renoir cry out with pain, Matisse could contain himself no longer:

‘Master, you have already created a vast and important body of work, why continue torturing yourself in this way?’

‘Very simple,’ Renoir replied. ‘Beauty remains, but pain passes.’

Maybe the everlastingness is standing open if you do something with blood of your heart,
with passion of your soul and pain of your mind.

Hey Paulo, isn’t this one a bit contradictory with the one you gave yesterday about sacrifice ?….xx

Life is a Paradox!

Kayla December 20, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Apparently you didn’t get the meaning of the one he gave yesterday…

Viorica December 20, 2010 at 3:21 pm

No
cuz the one from yesterday said that sacrifice is not mandatory… love is the one that matters.
But here, Renoir painted out of love, not because he wanted to sacrifice himself.

Emmanuelle December 20, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Dearest Florence, the two stories are the same, they relate to only one thing, which is Love. For Love is the greatest which make us forget about pain and suffering. We always need to seek Love, and from there, we are free, and we won’t even see it as a sacrifice. My humble opinion and interpretation.

Rafik Adel December 20, 2010 at 1:52 pm

Beauty is around us, but we need to forget our pain for a little to enjoy it

pain passes?

Indeed, it will pass. However, people keep holding it, not willing to let it pass.
How must they be able to let it pass?
Is it only by thinking that it will pass?

Yes, beauty remains, anyone can tell that from the picture.
I’ve been subject to this strange tool of God in great doses since last year and I can say that it passes making way to a more elevated spirit and the purest of love. Thanks over and over.

Transformation.

I live with a lot of physical pain, but once immersed in doing things that I love, the magic of enthusiam drives me forward and awareness of pain disappears.
In this way, pain is a blessing.

With Love,

Thankyou Renior and Matisse!!
Another thing that their friendship reminds me of:
Forgot to mention also, pain during natural childbirth.
From the moment my children were born, I didn’t think of the pain of labour. Overcome with love and gratitude to god, for the incredible gifts.
More Love xo

La belleza pasa, la belleza cansa, pero si experimentas algún dolor, la contemplación y ejecucuión de algo bello, puede hacer olvidar un dolor y sentir que paso.

I love the reminder here about the power of beauty. I think that in today’s society, this is so often forgotten. It’s not that people don’t care about beauty, but they are so purpose-driven that they can’t appreciate it for its own sake. Everything has to have some kind of practical function. We need to remember how to appreciate beauty for beauty’s sake, and that it doesn’t need a purose outside of that. Renoir not only recognize that but made it his legacy.

I didn’t realize that Renoir and Matisse had any kind of relationship. I wonder if this was a big inspiration in the life of Matisse? He seems to have taken Renoir’s words to heart to some extent.

Acho que a beleza exterior é temporária, assim como a dor. Mas, quando vemos a beleza pelas características do espírito, do interno, ai sim, concordo em dizer, que ela realmente seja eterna.
