Father Alan Jones says that building our soul requires Four Invisible Forces, namely love, death, power and time. It is necessary to love because we are loved by God. It is necessary to be conscious of death in order to understand life better. One has to fight in order to grow – but without falling into the trap of the power that we obtain in doing so, because we know that such power is worth nothing. And lastly, it is necessary to accept that our soul – although eternal – is at this moment caught in the web of time, with all its opportunities and limitations.

First Force: Love

Rabbi Iaakov’s wife was always looking for an excuse to argue with her husband. Iaakov never answered her provocations.
Until one night when, during a dinner with some friends, the rabbi had a ferocious argument with his wife to the surprise of all at table.
“What happened?” they asked. “Why did you break your habit of never answering?”
“Because I realized that what bothered my wife most was the fact that I remained silent. Acting in this way, I remained far from her emotions. My reaction was an act of love, and I managed to make her understand that I heard her words.”

Second Force: Death

As soon as he died, Juan found himself in a very beautiful place, surrounded by all the comfort and beauty that he had dreamed of.
A figure dressed in white came up to him and said, “You are entitled to anything you want.”
Enchanted, Juan did everything he had dreamed of during life. After many years of pleasure, he sought out the figure in white. He said that he had experienced everything and that now he needed a little work to make him feel useful.
“That’s the only thing I cannot get for you,” said the figure in white.
“But I’ll spend eternity dying of boredom! I’d much rather be in hell!”
“And where do you think you are?”

Third Force: Power

“I’ve spent a good part of the day thinking about things that I should not think about, desiring things that I should not desire, planning to do things that I should not do.”
The master pointed to a plant and asked the disciple if he knew what it was.
“It’s a belladonna. It can kill you if you eat the leaves. But it can’t kill you just by looking at it. Likewise, negative desires can cause no harm – if you don’t let yourself be seduced by them.”

Fourth Force: Time
A carpenter and his apprentices were traveling through the province of Qi in search of building materials. They saw a giant tree; five men holding hands could not encompass its girth, and its crown reached almost to the clouds.
“Let’s not waste our time with this tree,” said the master carpenter. “It would take us forever to cut it down. If we wanted to make a ship out of that heavy trunk, the ship would sink. If we tried to use it to build a roof, the walls would have to be specially reinforced.”
The group continued on its way. One of the apprentices remarked, “Such a big tree and no use to anyone!”
“That’s where you’re wrong,” said the master carpenter. “The tree was true to its own destiny. If it had been like all the others, we would have cut it down. But because it had the courage to be different, it will remain alive and strong for a long time.”

The feeling of inadequacy and stagnation is a horrible feeling. It is due to living a mediocre and unproductive life. For instance, the young man who passed away and fulfilled every pleasure but wanted to be useful but couldn’t be. I also enjoyed the passage about time. As a young man, my eyes have been opened up to time, to my own path, and staying true to who I am and embracing the path that is before me. It is hard however because in youth I want everything now instead of enjoying the journey. I want to be like that oak tree. I strive to live an enriching life even within the trials of time, not succumbing to spiritual death, enjoying the nuances and the heart ache that love sometimes bring and being a master over my lesser desires which is true power, the power of denying yourself.

1st force – love – acts of love may not always look like love.
2nd force – death – too much of anything may not be what we really need or appreciate.
3rd force – power – never fall under the seductive influence of power; one always looses
4th force – time – Have couage to be different, if just for yourself

I really loved the stories. So many comments on the Love one. I am also impressed by that one. I see myself there too, may be every woman does. What Rabbi did is one of many reactions, here I remembered the book One by Richard Bach – whatever choice we make in life will bring you to a result, but there are many doors open, many possibilities to choose from, and once you make your choice – that’s it! You start a kind of a journey.

It feels like with the love story what is missing in that relationship is understanding on both sides. why does she fight? Maybe the woman is unstable and needs a form of control, or the man doesn’t seem to recognize the woman’s feelings.A fight that can eventually bring people together is good but a fight that is trivial can be emotionally exhausting. Before you tie the knot with somebody you should ask one another “I am going on this journey with you called life but where are we going?”.Hopefully there is a common path, hopefully your dreams somehow match, hopefully .

she’s arguing (not fighting) … attention seeking for recognition of her vs. his love.

a very common situation between true lovers on the long term.

Loved it. The first force resinates the most with me, especially the analogy. My husband NEVER aanswers me unles I nag him. In all seriousness, I enjoyed this.

I would add space.
Space and time are two dimensions in which we must operate and work to live our path.
so they should be five.
The edges of the usual image of the star.
Love.

PS the four forces may be seen as a cross.
Rememeber anything about it?
in Psychology Carl Gustav Jung discovered the four aspect of our personality:(in italian) sensazione intuizione, pensiero, sentimento.
the perfect man should use all the four functions (four forces) in the same way and at the right time (again space and time).

wisdom from a wise man..so glad i don’t have to climb to the mountain top to get to you! life is so precious and the struggles have a lot to teach us.i especially liked the rabbi…he took the time to understand his wife and try to give her what she needed from him. he didn’t pass judgement on what she needed.

For years I’ve been reading your incredible stories, digging deep to try and fully understand only to learn that it’s a constant unfolding. That’s what makes your writing so rich. My ultimate dream is to write and capture – even if just a smidgen! – of what you capture.
In gratitude,

Sir Coelho, you’re the most inspiring man I’ve ever witnessed. The first time I approached you was through The Alchemist, but after my eyes detected those powerful words in your blog, I knew you were far more experienced than many others. I hope your books continue to crack those portals in your books so that I may reach you and try to comprehend you in a better way.
P.S I’m learning from you and am trying to adopt a style similar to that of yours in writing and choose this as a profession. Thank you for your inspiration.

in fact those are the most sparkling and sonorous phrases and ideas i have ever heard, you are endowed with such lovely turn of phrase to the fact that you craft words and phrase that aim to the heart as well as the brain.

as a matter of fact, those components are the key ingredient that one should be aware of….

nicely done Sir

the 4 forces are the reminder for us to make our life balance and wise. That’s right life has a limitation so we should aware of every step and every decision we make. we should think wise before act! Do only something that make us meaningful and useful to others.

Very very interesting article and so true on so many levels. This life is merely a preparation, a kind of rehearsal for the eternal life…if we choose to waste our time here in doing nothing purposeful then thats how it will be in the eternal life…except in the eternal life there is no escape hence it will become our own hell…unless we do what is meaningful and useful and brings happiness to us and to others around us. only when we learn to live our best life in this worldly existence we will continue to do the same in the spiritual existence….and that will be our eternal heaven.

I was astonished with the example of the rabbi as an example of the force of love. Neither the silent treatment nor arguments lead anywhere. It’s all about Being compasionate and learning to deal with people and situations with empathy. Why does she need to be looking for arguments in the first place? Maybe the Rabbi should look into the mirror and do something about himself instead of argueing with his wife. THAT would be an act of love.

culture alone cant change anything … its settling changes everything …
although there is two kind of culture …
there is one you inject to society …
there is another one you get from it …
so as we see here the human itself processes the cultures and the culture injected human changes something …
if we try it a lot of times you can change the person and the person can change the environment ….

cool. for me consequences of those are:

It is necessary to love & to be conscious of death
because:
this is the way to recognize our connections & similarities to each other; and to each other does not just mean within mankind, but within living beings. on this level, we are all the same.

One has to fight in order to grow – and the power that we obtain is there to be felt inside & link us up to the universe.

And lastly, it is necessary to accept that our soul – although eternal – is at this moment caught in the web of time, with all its opportunities and limitations.

yes, time reminds us that we need to think how to spend our life & appreciate it. the funny thing is: if I work on the others, I get more & more a feeling of eternity … that actually makes this “little” moment on earth soooo tiny.

You are a very powerful person, just because you have an excellent taste in choosing. You make the right choices in your life. Unfortunately, I keep making the wrong ones…Sometimes I choose to be sad. But to read your work inspire me to do better.
