“When you reach the end of the novel and reflect on it, you realise that the sublime place that contains all lives and all universes is not just in its pages or in the title of the book. In literary terms, Paulo Coelho’s novel is, itself, the Aleph.”
Pilar Obón

“When I was twenty-two, I devoted myself to the study of magic. I followed various paths, walked too close to the edge of the abyss, slipped and fell, gave up and returned to the path. I imagined that by the time I reached fifty-nine, I would be close to achieving the paradise and absolute peace that I think I see in the smiles of Buddhist monks. However, the search for peace has its price, and I ask myself: just how far am I prepared to go?”

In a frank and surprising personal story, which draws the reader in from the very first page, Paulo Coelho reveals how a grave crisis of faith caused him to go in search of a path of spiritual renewal and growth. In order to get close to God again, he decided to start over: to travel, to experiment, to reconnect with people and the world.

Between March and July 2006, letting himself be guided by signs, he travelled to various continents – Europe, Africa and Asia – on a journey through time and space, through past and present, in search of himself.

As the journey progresses, Paulo gradually emerges from his isolation, sheds both ego and pride and opens himself up to friendship, love, faith and forgiveness, unafraid to confront the inevitable challenges of life.

In Brasil, as soon as it was released. ALEPH went directly to # 1 in all major bestselling lists, and kept the position for several weeks.

ALEPH will be published world wide during 2011

    Dear Mr.Paulo Coelho,
Being a citizen of India, i do believe in re-incarnations, karma and life after death. But how do we know the moment when we meet the person who was important in our past life??

  5. shekh says:

    Dear Paulo.
Thanks for such inspirations.I am 25 now and till 24 I never ever experienced any novel. I believed that people reading novel are mad or wasting time. But after reading THE ALCHEMIST , I dont know what happened. It helped me to bring my energy back.I am fond of your novels.Although I am still a busy soul but I arrange some time to read any good novel. Now a days I am experiencing THE ALEPH. Want to say thanks.

  6. Sun says:

I lost my dad three years ago..He committed suicide . I had been struggling over his death. I knew that my sadness and clining on to the memory of my dad is not going to help at all. But I just can not forgive myself and him as much as I love him. After I read Alpeh I forgive myself..and him.. also pray for his soul, his sprit.. and hoping in someday in the next life or future, I will meet him again and return the love he gave to me. I am still in the process of healing, but this book initiates the healing process. I forgive and am forgiven. Thank you.

  7. Shrikanya says:

    Dear Mr Paulo,

‘The Alchemist’ is one of your first book that I have read. It helped me during a time of despair. Even today, whenever I feel depressed, I read this book. ‘The Manual of the Warrior of Light’ is another that I am quite fond of. Thanks a lot for writing for writing such marvelous books which inspire us to follow our dreams and the deepest passion. I am yet to read ‘Aleph’. But still wanted to convey my thanks. Those books mean a lot to me. I would like to meet you at least once in this lifetime :)

  8. tony S says:

Its a great feeling to know that there is someone out there that can experience all the wonderful signs that God has placed at your disposal. I hope your next book will be a sequel to the Aleph. You raise doubts, questions, theories and appear as humanly possible to your readers. Its fantastic to know that readers can connect to you and your thoughts from your first line to your last line in your book. Congrats and God Bless! Tony from Singapore.

  9. Elif Bakiler says:

  10. M.R. says:

Hi Paulo. I’m a 23 years’ old student of Medicine who has specias “habilities” such as premonitions and talking to the death. I have had to stand some “negative energies” sent towards me and my soulmate, and as you were one time, I have been in a psychiatric diagnosed in my case of bipolar disorder. Even though my family and friends think I’m really crazy, I have your books and the fact that you also know there are other dimensions and that the space-time barrier is inexistant to stand still.

I’ve read el Aleph, and as I saw some things similar to what you saw in your trips to your past lifes, I think I may be one of the eight girls.

  11. M R. says:

Hi paulo. I’m a Spanish girl who has read all your books, books that have helped me develop my “habilities” I as you was in a psychiatric for one month accused od bipolar disorder and have the capacity of predicting the future and talk to the death. I have fought the most i have been able to be with my soul mate, and nowadaysan and after having been to past lifes and having read el Aleph, I really think i could be une of the eight girls, who knows?

  13. Tinny says:

    Dear Sir Paulo,
I’m so happy that I can leave a comment here.
I am so fascinated by your writings..
    Especially The Alchemist..
You wrote it as if I can fly into the story..
And I just can say “wow”.. You wrote it in the way nobody could think..
Thank you so much sir for your inspirations.. :)

  14. Namrata Das says:

I’m not an adult yet, but I really like the depth you have in your novels: you write so well. I mean, The Witch of Portobello was the first book of yours that I read, and it has been several times that I have read it, and every time I read it, it really feels so wow. . . I mean there aren’t words to tell when I finish any book of yours, just a feeling of immense satisfaction prevails. I must be too bold for my years, because I have already read Eleven Minutes. There were moments when I would go, ” Gosh! I’m reading this stuff!!” And then I’d close the book, stare at it for a while, and then suddenly realize that I too am a woman, and so is Maria, and believe me, there’s just something in this thought that has made me read the entire book, and made me smile with the dignity of a woman. My dad got me Aleph recently, I hope to write words of praise for that one too! Till then, kudos to the dearest Coelho.

  15. almira lapina says:

hello sir. i’ve just read the book. i think i now have a word for those experiences which i could not describe. thank you. god bless you.

  16. Ahana Mukherjee says:

    Dear Mr. Paulo,

your book Aleph found me when I was searching for a meaning, a reason for happenings in life. Why do things happen or we meet people when we do. Aleph has shown me a direction and now I can be at peace with myself. Thank you for writing the book and making things so very clear and lucid!

  17. Rhea Joyce Semillano says:

What is the secret of number 11 in your books, or it doesn’t exist?

    Example:

    Eleven minutes,
    11 roses in Aleph,
11th November 1997 in ”Veronika decides to die”, in ”By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept”
Pilar meet again her man after 11 years…

Just curious does it have some meaning?

–Read the comments and found this. And I am also curious about it. :)
I am planning to buy the book Aleph, can’t wait to have a copy^^
You are such my inspiration. Your words, it’s always a food for thought.
    Thank you Mr. Paulo. :)

    1. Michael Thio says:

I’ve always wondered the same thing regarding the number 11. In MR. Coelho’s book “11 Minutes”, every chapter begins with a time and when you add those times up it equals 11. I myself have the number 11 appear and be a recurring part in my life, from the address of the homes I’ve stayed, birthdays, phone numbers, and many of my closest friends share the same parallel though they are not aware of it. I figured the importance and significance of the number 11 through the attacks of 9/11 when the New York Times did an expose on how numerologists would have a field day for everything that day equalled to the number 11- even the Twin Towers looks like the number 11, has 110 and 111 stories, Afghanistan 11 letters, and so on. I believe also World War 1 began on the 11th day, of the 11th month. On the research I’ve done, the number 11 is a master number in numerology and it’s definition is that it is as difficult as it is rewarding. I also believe it’s a sign from the Divine telling us something. And what it means in our personal life is for us to interpret although I still haven’t discovered its personal meaning for my life. I would love to hear Mr. Coelho’s insights on this number and it’s significance. – Michael Thio (Philippines)

  18. Georgia Petrou says:

Thanks Paulo….I’ve read Aleph in two days…Thank you very much…You made
me realise that my own journey has a cause…Speak for those who cannot
be heard…You are right…People do find their self in Aleph…Bless you…
And may the fire on the opposite mountain keeps burning for everyone of
    us..

  19. nikkolai marie says:

    Hello sir,

bought a copy of your book yesterday as a birthday gift to myself.. :) the best gift i’ve given myself so far.. i just can’t put into words this amazing feeling while reading this.. your words are like food to my soul.. thank you! – nikkolaimarie (philippines)

p.s. you have a lot of readers from the Philippines :)

  20. Bruno Reardon says:

    Bonjour,
    Tenez-vous l’idée d’Aleph du livre «Le Matin des Magiciens» de Pauwels/Bergier ?

    1. Paulo Coelho says:

I read the book when I was young, and this book was a landmark for me. However, I don’t remember them mentioning Aleph. Shall I read it again?

    2. Suela says:

Yes, it does mention Aleph on the next but one chapter :” The place(spot) beyond the infinite”, talking about Borches. It refers to the number Aleph. But not as you put it. I have read a reference of yours Paulo, saying that you have seen the Aleph word on Borches. Old news I would say.
Just a reminder so as to save some searching time, you will find it on the last pages of the book.

  21. Between March and July 2006, letting himself be guided by signs, he traveled to various continents – Europe, Africa and Asia

  22. Pema Cheden says:

    Dear Mr.Paulo
I stared liking your work since the day I read The Alchemist …. then followed by other books. Your words have always inspired me to love life and they have sown the seed of hope through spiritual insight. However Im yet to read Aleph the one which I ve been looking forward to and the reviews of Aleph clearly says that there is so much stored in for me.

  23. Ana says:

Me encantaría poder verle alguna vez y poder abrazarle. ¿Vendrá a Barcelona próximamente?
    Gracias.
    Bendiciones Paulo.

  24. sam says:

    Hello ,
I saw a Persian Film which has a same story as your recent book,Transmogrification and they mentioned Aleph as well in the film(Green fire). Just wondering is this book a copy of film, because the film screened by 2008, and you use Persian stories in your book before( The Alchemist).
    Thanks
    Sam

    1. Rob says:

Can you please specify the persian name of the movies u have mentiond? i couldnt find anything by that name …

  25. laura says:

  26. Izabela says:

I’m using this book as part of an assignment where I have to write a book review, but I cannot do it justice. This is my last assignment ever for uni and I am all squeezed out of writing juice. I think I’ve already read about 6 of your books. I am not religious, but I am sometimes spiritual and your books make me feel less alone for a while anyway.

Sending lots of hugs and warm wishes.

  27. Julia C says:

    Dear Mr Coelho,
Thank you for your prodigious and rejuvenating words. By The River Piedra and Aleph have been my constant companions throughout a recent journey which I undertook. They were spur of the moment purchases yet every word seemed to ring true firstly as I travelled through Madrid, Spain and beyond with Pilar voicing many thoughts that had not yet manifested in the forefront of my mind. Aleph was a guiding light; your words, whether directly or analogously, were intertwined with my path. I’m sure it is no coincidence. Fondest Regards, Julia.

thank you. I will also post a copy of this comment in http://paulocoelhoblog.com/2010/08/10/o-aleph-comentarios-de-leitores/

  28. Shaikh Muhammed Ali says:

    Paulo,

I must confess that I have been reding since I was 7 and have been a voracious reader since then. Lately in the last 3 years I have been writing aggresively too. I have bought all your books and could ot wait to lay my hands on Aleph here in Pakistan. I have read the Quran, Gita and the Bible but your writing is the inspiration that ALl of us need in the current world of turmoil today. The way you connect religion with Sufism is simply amazing. May you live long and continue to inspire us all. Ameen.

    God bless…………..Shaikh

  29. Almira says:

    Dearest Paolo,

Of course that I bought Aleph already, but again and again the Croatian version. Some of your books I bought in Serbian, but Sir, why don’t we, people in Bosnia, have the Bosnian version, I am more than sure that our sensibility is much closer and our translation would be more sensible and therefore more ‘readable’ for us, Bosnians. I read all, but all of your books in English, too, that’s why I let myself to judge. Unfortunately, I don’t speak Portuguese which I would love love so I could sense better not every word but every single letter by you- that much I’ve been addicted to whatever you live and write. My mission is to translate Aleph into Bosnian as soon as I get the first copy in English…My boat is always away in the deepest oceans. Loads of love and warmest regards from Sarajevo, Almira

  30. Menar says:

I bought Aleph in a bookstore in Dubai. I dont usually buy books on the spur ot the moment. I like to read the reviews first to see if it is something will like to read. The cover of the edition sold in Dubai attracted my attention, then the title ‘Aleph’ intrigued me. I bought it without hesitation feeling that I will find the answer to my quest. I have not been able to put the book down. I am shaken by it, and I have not finished reading it yet.
Thank you Mr. Coelho. My only wish is to have been able to read it in Portugese!

  31. Vandy says:

    I luv u.
    thnaks!

  32. Luna says:

  33. durairaj says:

I read Aleph am not able to sleep for last 2 days.it had shaken me up.physically i dont express the feeling.but one thing for first time in life enotion of love erupted in me i was in complete love for last two days now i see my life with love.
    you …………………………..

  34. Slavica says:

I still haven’t read Aleph,i can only imagine what is it all about,or it is my premonition to tell me what i can’t see….. in a writing it is mostly about what is not visible, like a world of magic Paulo Coelho searches and live in with characters of the novel.
What annoying me is question whether such a journey has any sense or we should let life unroll by itself,or i might reach a point where i got back to the start point …and what now?

  35. Madiha says:

    Is it available in Pakistan?
I have been anxiously waiting for it.

In English, yes. But the Urdu translation will be ready next year

    1. Shaikh Muhammed Ali says:

I have read most of your books. I am from Puerto Rico and went to New Jersey for college. I found my self reading Veronica Decides to Die and after that I fell in love with your writing. I want to thank you, because in times when I have felt lost, your books have saved me. It feels like I get my faith back and on my darkest hours I quote a part of one of the books and find strength to go on. The Fifth Mountain, the Alquimist, A orillas del rio de piedra, El Zahir, excetera… I am looking forward to read The Aleph and continue to grow spiritually as well. Muchas Gracias you are a brilliant writer and a source of inspiration to all of us that live chasing dreams.

  49. Wesna says:

Greetings from Serbia, here people also enjoy in your books! Best wishes and many good books!

  50. rabiatuladawiyah says:

    Dear Paulo,
I must say that having read so many of your other books, Aleph exposed me to something I was so afraid of admitting. That in a life of a spititual seeker, the trials and tribulations faced by their spouses are monumental and unavoidable.
I’m particularly impressed and in awe with your wife. Would love to know how she manages her feelings as a woman when you go into your journey of self redepmtion in your past lives (the 8 women). Having a spiritual seeking partner myself, i sometimes can’t bring my heart to adapt and accept that through learning and being on the spiritual path, sharing the love and soul of your partner with others is a given right. I sometimes get lost and loose the sense of love altogether.Reading Aleph confirmed my deepest fear. That love, without acceptance and sacrifice cannot last.
