A fervent Buddhist lady made every effort to love others. But every time she went to the market, a merchant made indecent proposals to her.
One rainy morning, when the man bothered her once again, she lost control and hit him on the face with her umbrella.
That same afternoon, she sought out a monk and told him what had happened.
“I am ashamed,” she said. “I couldn’t control my hate.”
“You did wrong to hate him,” answered the monk. ” But life is about communicating our feelings to each other – and you need to understand that people are different”.
“The next time he says something, fill your heart with goodness.
“And hit him again with your umbrella, because that’s the only language he knows.”

good Story…
Its not an Alien language… most probably you can see around u…
Yes, totally agree! Don’t give his weakness strength over you and teach him in a manner he will understand.
When you mix a cocktail, you can put a little umbrella for decoration on top of the drink…
When you mix a joke sometimes the “punch line” is lost in the translation…”of the different languages people understand”.
Compassionate Umbrella Whacking … such a relief!!!!!!!!!!
By the way the umbrella is a symbol for wisdom and compassion…so use it wisely and with compassion…(bang, bang, bang)…guess that was enough umbrella bashing for today…
With loving kindness,
Satora
wonderful!!! :)
sometimes its had to get the hate out when the words used are so painful that it tears at your heart. But whatever said..this way is always better. Thank you very much
Haha…very funny..This story is really very good! Different people needs different approach, “different language”. That’s very true in this world, even in same language still there is “breakdown” in communications. Only love can speak beyond languages. Thank you Mr. Paulo and Mr. Ken, your illustration is funny too as the story meant to be.
Thank you, Nisa!
A good story
Me encanto…!!
Grazie.
I have nothing under control anymore. I can’t control my hate nore my anger.
scream into a pillow at home. if this is impossible:
take your car, drive a lonely road, close the windows & scream out the hate & anger. but watch the road.
or do this on a lonely walk.
there is a proverb in Urdu language[Pakistani] a peron who understands the language of stick, wont get warnings by words :-D
Moral of the story: Maintain your integrity, but not at the expense of your dignity!
God took away love from me because I went too far.
Thats A beautiful story and yes We Should keep our Calm And Not Loose Our Courage Which Is An Important Quality Of Humanbeings !
Well, i suffered for 2 years from this guy who used to comment about me everyday.. he wouldnt let me talk with anyone..i used to get very angry but i waited a year or so thinking… he would get tired and stop teasing me if i ignore him….but he kept getting on my nerves and i got totally irritated, so i moved from the place i used to stay… well going by the above story, i was so totally stupid and know what i did was not right… but now i know what being good and standing up to oneself means… thank u paulo… thanks really!
nice
thts a nice story
hahaha…………. may be one can pretend to be mute…… and hit someone when he is rude….. the only language that the other part can understand.
really good the lesson of tit 4 tat . respect about your dignity & self respect. dont let any one misuse yourself.
Another great post, as always. Thank you, Sir.
Sometimes people don´t want to understand something because they don´t like the answer and refuse to see the reality, sometimes suddenly things happens to show what you need know; y think, we need to be alert to hear the messages from god, you can call it the sound of the universe, y rather think is god trying to help us to make better persons, have a happy new year!!!
Reminds me of watching the Dali Lama answering the question about what he would do if a mosquito was biting him. First time, flick it away, and same the second time. With a large hearted laugh he gestured ‘smack’ the third time.
comuunication..
The woman using an umbrella recognizing itself equal to its animal condition. It should use force of an image of the woman. Force of the sight. Then the Animal to reconcile before it. It is language of a sight of strength of mind.
Thinking of the human body as a microcosm of the Universe, the Earth may just do away with humans if it needs to save itself, just like what we do when bacteria, living in our bodies, threaten our existence.
Oh, wrong thread. sorry
2011 – ano do Paulo Coelho no horóscopo chinês.
Its a great story because it highlights the need for people to accept other people as they are, and to yield to other people instead of always wanting people to yield to you. More often people think that the only language, or understanding, out there is their own. So much is lost because people refuse to yield to someone else and speak their language for the sake of being heard.
Hahaha, funny! Rare are those people who’s ever constant in giving kindness towards other people around. Whatever languages we use, let love remain in our hearts.
that was really nice and l got some doubt cleared….. thanks…….
A perfect action.
tough love…..sometimes, it’s the only way !! ;-)
Muchas gracias
Actually, the story has nothing to do with Buddhist terrorism or even with failure to be good. What the monk is trying to tell the lady is that being good doesn’t mean to be weak or stupid and allow others to abuse you. One can be good and still stand up for oneself. The lady in the story was victim of sexual harassment and had every right to protect herself. Her mistake was that she ignored her rights, she allowed herself to be victimized and she only reacted when her anger had build up to a point where she couldn’t take it any longer. The monk taught her that anger is the wrong motivation. In the future, she should keep her heart at peace and react simply because it is the right thing to do. And use the language that the other understands. No point in talking civilized to a sexual predator. He is an animal and should be treated as such. I wonder how many women take sexual harassment, emotional and even physical abuse without a word because they mistakenly believe that standing up for themselves would make them evil? And how many man take advantage of their kindness every single day?
Dear Cristina,
VERY NICE. YOU said it all. Thank you for your wisdom.
with metta,
Rose
Happy New Year Cristina,
Thank you for sharing this valuable insight. I agree with everything you say. Say No to any abuse. Many men do take advantage of kind women. More recent studies reveals a lot of men are being abused too. In fact I have met numerous men who has told me about sexual abuse too, and of emotional abusive partners. So I just felt like adding, abuse is more of an intimate relationship thing that can happen by both sexes. But in general, you are correct that if we look at assault statistics so on, women are probably victims 80% of the time. But if we look at sexual abuse statistics, there is under reporting by men, because they are more ashamed of admitting to it.
Anyway, get out the umbrellas ladies! :)
I am sorry…”Buddhist terrorism”?? whats that?
Beautiful interpretation…Well said
i really respect your thoughts and the things you have written above.
strong words Cris
“He is an animal and should be treated as such.” some past pain is making u say these ?? what about forgiving one’s tormentors, etc etc. what teh monk said was different, u may hit him but without hatred. was the monk not being judgmental in saying that ” he knows this language only” did the monk know the merchant ?
it’s true that one can stand up for one’s rights while being polite, can even kill politely, but that, offense, offensive gestures should be one’ last resort, anyway, what is there after that, last weapon should be used very carefully. no ?
I agree with you 100%. I dont think anyone should be harassed or abused in anyway. I think all parties lose during such times.
But you shouldn’t forget that some women only communicate in such way as well. These days, women want to be treated as sexual objects. That’s why they get the boob jobs, and want to be models. To this day, I dont understand why any woman with any self respect would pose in a lingerie or bikini.
I don’t even remember the last girl I went out with who either didnt wish to be a model or didnt have/want a boob job.
Says a lot about me right :-)
so true, cristina! this is “wise love”. when we love, a lot of conditioning by our environment, parents, past events come in & affect it. it is good to sit down & think about how one loves.
“I wonder how many women take …”. if you put the term sexual harrassment in the overall term bullying, then there are a lot of men & women ….
yes, it can be a hard situation. & is not acceptable. that’s the reason I love this little story.
& did you see: hearts everywhere: on the umbrella, cup. there is a red dot on the spoon. I bet this is also a heart. want to have a spoon with a heart!!!
I loved your response to this often very misunderstood subject (especially by me!) I am one of those women you mentioned and this has really helped me see things from a different angle.
Thank-you
Thank you dear Cristina for writing this. I have just gotten out of an abusive relationship and as difficult as it is, I am trying to pick up the pieces again. I was abused sexually, severely for several months. This man who I trusted wholeheartedly wronged me over and over again. He used to Literally tie my hands to the bed post when he went to work to keep me from escaping and seeking help. He would often bring other females and screw them in front of me and force me to watch and listen. He lied to me, he lied to my friends and relatives as to my whereabouts. And when I finally was able to escape, it took me a long time to come to health because he shattered my heart, my soul, my body, he pushed me as low as humanly possible. Still to this day I am trying to regain my strength. I have lost all respect for him, and cannot even look at his face. If I forgive him or not is irrelevant, but I hope God will grant him salvation.
well said thx for sharing :)
That s amazing… I like that..
Me too. Wonderfully put Cristina. You opened my eyes to something I had not noticed.:o)
People talk about/ wish for a return to civility in political discourse. Firstly, there never was such a state. In the US, John Adams described Alexander Hamilton as, “The bastard son of a Scotch pedlar”. It’s the “Scotch” I object to. For the record, it’s “Scots”. Secondly, civility is perceived as weakness by the Far Right. We need to hit ‘em right between the eyes to get their attention. Then, we can talk civilly with a refresher course in attention maintenance periodically.
CREO QUE ALGUNOS HOMBRES SE PASAN CON LAS MUJERES,,COMO SI ELLOS FUERAN SUS DUEÑOS EN ALGUNOS PAISES,NO DEBERIA ODIARLO,PERO EL PARAGUAZO NO ESTUVO MAL,NO TIENE POR K EXISTIR ODIO.SIMPLEMENTE TE DEFIENDES(ES UN DERECHO)AL ODIO HAY K ODIARLO JAJAJAJ…AFORTUNADAMENTE CUANDO ME LLEGA SENTIMIENTO DE ODIO ME ENFERMO HASTA K LO CONSIGO CONTROLAR,NO PUEDO ODIAR,ES CANCERIGENO….ABRAZOS AMIGOS
The language without words! Love
Thankyou Paulo and Ken and Suphi!
Thank you, Jane!!
I love your cat, by the way.
Honesty to ourselves is to ackmowledge the yin and the yan in ourselves….. the shadow and the light….. the “good”and the “bad”
Jesus said : Be strong as a serpent and meek as a lamb
Jung states that the journey through LIFE is the inner journey of constantly bringing light to the undiscovered parts of ourselves ( the SHADOW)
There is “good” in the worst person ( eg Hitler) and ” bad” in the best person.
I don’t believe in the terms good and bad which indicate judgement. I rather replace it with the term fragmented and wholer people.
Lets rejoice in the excitement of other cultures with different points of opinion!
…
LOL…
Great story, gave me a blessing for who I am…
I am the one that carry a big stick and does not have any problem using it…
…
External actions do not always reflect one’s interior state. Hitting the merchant is not hateful the original intent is. The merchant needed to be hit but the lady did not need to hate him. Loving does not necessarily entail liking.
That was really funny. At least i took it that way.
omg!!!!! just perfect!!! :-DD
i feel what you are saying through this Paulo :) yeah, that is what is needed sometimes :) I mean we can always choose to be good always no matter what, but sometimes we can to really take a step back and really stop caring for the ones who hurt us continuously :)
A proof that no single religion was made to spread peace.
Been a victim of a terrorist buddhist myself.
Peace to everyone
as I asked before this is the second reference to Buddhist terorism please explain your remark.
The lady has a moustache and big feets.
Some people love girls like that..
Nobody is perfect
Really very humorous, as it is so real in everyday life, epecially among non-Buddhists… Thank you for that revelation.
señor coelho he leido sus libros de los cuales me he enrriquecido espiritualmente y tambien en otros aspectos de mi vida personal, fans 1111111111111
