During his pilgrimage to Mecca, a holy man began to feel the presence of God.
In the midst of a trance he knelt down, hid his face and prayed:
“Lord, I ask for only one thing in life: that I be given the grace of never offending you.”
“I cannot grant you that grace,” answered the Almighty. ‘If you don’t offend me I shall have no reason to pardon you.
” If I have no need to pardon you, soon you will also forget the importance of mercy towards others.
“So go on your way with Love and let me grant pardon now and again so that you don’t forget that virtue as well.”

Lindo!!!
Prophet Mohammed also said; if you were unable to err, Allah would have replaced you by people who are able, so they can ask for His forgivness and He shall always grant it.
It seems to me that Allah’s favorite thing is to pardon a regretful sinner.
whether it is muslim or christian or other tradition it doesn’t really matter.. the gist is the same.. so they are all equal.. all the same…
the same is said in a christian prayer , as it says :
Our Father, who art in heaven ….
…………………..
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us………
…………………
Amen
Love and Gratitude

Dear Marwan, i think it is because the joy of the Father (God) for the return of the unprodigal son/daughter is immense, because of all the Divine Love to us…
p.s the earlier post was not intended towards you, quick typing -> erroring, so sorry ;o)
love and Gratitude

The message in this story is that we are not perfect and anyone could do mistakes ;so forgive other poeple if they hurt you cause you also could be in the same situation. And , when you know that you are in the wrong side you should demand pardon , demand it near god and near the person that you’ve hurted.Imagine that we all act like this ,it will be no place for hate anymore.
Some of them kiss the foot, some kiss the hand, yet all must suffer to learn…
The notion that “something which is everything” can be offended interestingly reflects the limited vision of those with closed eyes…
Sometimes the allusion and metaphor is lost on the reader…
Dear Zack,
We only wish, thinking made things work the way we want for us.
You’re right. Any religion is not a tradition. It breathes.
Paulo may be wrong, he may be not. Why mirror our own beloved faiths with our tired souls who lend out suffocating verses.
Ar Rahman and Ar Rahim are two beautiful names and Attributes of Allah, which means Compassionate and Merciful, and when human beings display these qualities they are show godliness. Only a humble repentive sinner forgives mankind unconditionally.
Thank you Paulo for reminding us not only to seek forgiveness but to be kind to others and pay it forward.
PC, I think, simply meant God wants us to have an inherent quality of forgivness,be merciful towards others….
” The quality of mercy is not strain’d
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest
It blesseth him that takes and him that gives.”—Shakespeare.
In the tradition of Islam, it’s said that Abraham had a home in the desert and helped people trespassing the desert providing theml with some food and drink after asking them if they were believers. One of the strangers responds he isn’t a believer and so Ibrahim refused to help him . He got a message from allah telling hiom: How come I’ve forgiven him for 50 years (all his life) although I gave him everything he has (hands, sight, blood …. and you refuse to forgive. So Ibrahim felt some remorse and went after the man and gave him some food, when the man queried about Ibrahim’s change of mind, he explained and that was the reason for rthe man to change his attitude.
Nice one!
God will is offended by our foolishness! Our Creator (call him, Yahveh, El, God, Buda, Jesus, and specially Ala) is about LOVE, endless LOVE!
There are sins WITHOUT forgiveness, when done counting on his mercy.
qoute ”If I have no need to pardon you, soon you will also forget the importance of mercy towards others.
That includes respect to other’s beliefs.
Love is what is given, not opresion and represion.
Love takes us to the Light! as sure I am not wanting to be away from the Light!

here i should say SUBHANALLAH! AND thanx 2 paulo!
My understanding is that Islamic tradition mentioned here by Paolo Coelho is referred to the pilgrimage to Mecca. It doesn’t matter to call it tradition or anything else. The basic profound point so beautifully referred to here by Paolo Coelho, as I understand it, is that only someone who has experienced the joy of having been pardoned can be forgiving, compassionate and feel the importance of mercy towards others.
Some of the comments reveal the fact that prejudice doesn’t allow us to read, see, hear or feel the reality. It makes us to always be on guard to defend/fight against an imagined enemy.
I am moderating all comments that are not agressive, but I am also a little bit surprised with the reactions.
I like your comment. I would like to add that in striving to be so perfect that he wouldn’t need to be forgiven, this person is rejecting a part of himself. If he could accept himself more completely, he would be able to accept the flaws in others.
” Oh Allah, Forgive me all my sins
great and small, the first and the last,
those that are apparent and those that are hidden ”
[Muslim:1/350]
**
“Oh Allah, I seek Protection in Your Pleasure
from Your Anger, and I seek Protection in Your
Forgiveness from Your Punishment. I Seek Protection in You from You. I cannot count Your Praises. You are as You have Praised Yourself”
[Muslim 1/352]
God can be complicated sometimes lol…
Thank you to include the Word Islam in your writing
Thank you to help your reader to search and to look of the concept of Islam
hoping that they will find how it’s beautiful is as religion
and how our god very merciful front of the mistakes of his believer
Zack, you’re totally ignorant of what you’re talking about. I suggest for you the same advise you gave Mr. Coelho..Go and learn more about Islam
Only through the way of spirituality one can truly identify that every religion leads to the ONE. The real fools are always busy in making comparative statements about religion, proving the others wrong.
well said..Nafiz
Gracias Paulo C. Eres Grandeeeeeeeee..
By not offending anyone and live a perfectly well, good and otherwise happy life. I dare say this is the fools choice. Live, take chances, offend, succeed or not. Your own life and of those in your path have been enhanced. Somehow. Strive to be the best you can be, whichever faith or none. This should be our Way.
Thanks for sharing
This story is the central theme of any religion. If religion is practiced with the purpose of unshackling the true godliness that nests in every human being, human minds will be spiritually disciplined not to commit many sins in the first place and if committed, honest and sincere admission of the same will be spontaneous.
Dear Paulo;
You made a big difference in my life, thank you for your shared ideas and viewpoints.
Wanted to say that i agree with Rema regarding the definition of tradition and wanted to add that even prophet Mohammad made some mistakes which god could prevent from happening but god wanted it to happen to let people know that no one is perfect but best people are those who repent with deep belief with gods perfection and mercy…
insiring
may Allah will be seen in my pilgrim too Ameen sum Ameen
may Allah forgive me too for intentional and unintentional sins
there’s nothing called islamic tradition !! but i hope that u’ll learn more about islam Mr coelho cause u say lot of thing who are ,deeply, wrong
Then do not read it!
hmmmm.!!
mr zack education is light..!!
get some knowledge about islam u will observe this ur self..!
and please dont spread controversies at paulo’s blog
Not deeply wrong, i think its a true content but we are not agreed upon “Islamic tradition” term. Now let people read the good meaning Paulo has written and we can tell about that wrong term in a good way. So its not all deeply wrong!
this really annoyed me, Zack; I’m a Muslim too and I find your comment to say the least offending…
1. please analyze the whole “Islamic tradition” idea from all angles before giving an advice to someone who devoted his life to spirituality…
2. this blog is certainly a place to talk freely, but your freedom stops when it gets in other peoples’ freedoms; if you have a point then prove it (scholars, Islamic texts, etc.)but until you do, keep it to yourself…
Paulo!
This is sheer mysticism,,,only a person deeply immersed, like you, in sufi tradition can appreciate and tell such a profound story!
u never fail to impress us sir…. thankyou for ur wise words…
Dear Paulo,
What you wrote has nothing to do with Islam, and there is nothing called Islamic tradition! Islam is a deep religion that guides its followers in all aspects. Traditions are the habits that are inhereted from one generation to another, and doesn’t have to be true or related to Islam even if Muslims follow it. In the wholy Quraan, you can find quotes that mention the fact that all human beings are sinful, it’s a part of their very self, but God is so merciful that when ased for forgiveness with a true heart and regret, a repent is forgiven.
agree with what u said , except from the part u mentioned all human beings are sinful . because in Islam it’s believed prophets and Imams are free from sins and are innocent
thank you.
Tradition: (noun) the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, especially by word of mouth or by practice: a story that has come down to us by popular tradition. ….
This a small fable found in islamic literature…just like others we have been reading in this 20 sec read…so instead of taking things “literally”, lets learn from it and pass it on as well….
paulo, this is fantastic…i love the fact that u R so tolerant to all religions and make all of them sound beautiful!
“Then do ye remember Me I will remember you.” (2-152)
Allah never tires… He will forgive us many many times over… it is us humans that find it difficult to forgive others and most importantly forgive ourselves….
Seeking forgiveness from Him reminds us of Him. Remember Him so that He will remember you.
peace be on u paul coelho:)
aweeeeesome blog:) …
, Allah has ordered us to start anything w’re about to do with “in the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful ” … whether its just a lil simple task as tyng ur shoelaces etc..
cuz the Mercy of Allah is boundless… Allah loves forgiveness n forgives even the biggest of sins if u repent to him.. n thi feeeling of being forgiven by such a great entity makes a person feeel sooo grateful n humble that if God can forgive why cant we?? :)
thanxxx for sharing:)
may Allah guide us all to the rigth path n keep on showering us with His mercy.. ameeen:)
I am moslem, and I am NOT offended by this story. Thank you for sharing it.
I think that God has forgiving by forgetting us.
This is just so beautifully said like only Paolo Coelho can say or that person can say who has the experienced the joy of pardoning someone and felt so very compassionate to have been pardoned by someone very close to him/her..
If at all one and everyone could acquire this virtue of pardoning the dear ones and everyone to make them all dear, we would not have situations like Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.
ALLAH BLESS U. IF U WANNA KNOW ISLAM DON’T LOOK TO TODAY’S MUSLIMS . LOOK TOO THE ISLAMIC VIRTUE
Since i saw a friend of mine reading one of your best books the alchemist, i knew i had found a good potrayer of knowledge just the way i like it. I then started following your blogs and to date i find your writings to be very heart warming and masterpieces. Keep on the good work.
I’m proud to be a muslim.. every muslim is not a terrorist .. we are same as you.. we also hai 7 liters of blood in our body and all also walk on earth..there isnt much of a difference.. Allah almighty has always given forgivness to his ppl..and will continue till the day of judgement.. May Allah guide us to the right path.. Ameen
I love this blog,it fulfil me with energy and blesing,i fell more near god.Thank you Paulo
No offence Mr. Paulo whatsoever! Beautiful Islamic tradition put into simple beautiful words.

oi, td bem ctg?
Queria saber quem é que posta no twitter? O próprio ou a assistente?
Somente curiosidade. Já me viciei em ti seguir

“It is human to err, but it is divine to forgive” thats how the saying goes. Go ahead, enjoy both.
