A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream.
The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food.
The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him.
She did so without hesitation.
The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime.
But, a few days later, he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.
“I’ve been thinking,” he said. “I know how valuable this stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious.
“Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me this stone.”

Una mujer sabia que viajaba por las montañas encontró una piedra preciosa en un arroyo.
Al día siguiente se cruzó con otro viajero que estaba hambriento, y la mujer abrió su bolsa para compartir con él su comida.
El viajero hambriento vio la piedra preciosa en la bolsa, se quedó admirado de su belleza y le pidió que se la regalara.
La mujer lo hizo sin dudar.
El viajero partió, alegrándose de su buena suerte. Sabía que la joya valía lo suficiente como para darle seguridad por el resto de su vida.
Pero a los pocos días regresó en busca de la mujer sabia. Cuando la encontró, le devolvió la piedra.
“He estado pensando” dijo. “Sé cuán valiosa es esta piedra, pero se la devuelvo con la esperanza de que pueda obsequiarme algo mucho más precioso.”

The pursuit of wealth is driven by a desire to be happy, fulfilled, content. To learn contentment in any circumstance eradicates the desire to pursue material wealth as a source of fulfillment.
The wise woman knew this and therefore valued the stone only because it looked pretty.

About two weeks ago, I gave what seemed to be a homeless woman $5. As I started to walk away from her a woman watching told me that the homeless woman was a fraud. That a news team followed her and found out that she lived in a spacious apartment in a lovely neighborhood. She advised me not to give people who are homeless money, but to donate to organizations who help them. I felt like a stupid sucker, but after reading this, I feel much better.
I know someone who keeps on buying new things– use them once or twice and pass them on to the less fortunate with a smug smirk– do you think this is charity??
so giving is not always great.. it’s only when we give away something that we hold dear to our hearts that it can be considered as an act of greatness!! The characters in this story represent greatness– and that is what we should all celebrate –the greatness inherent in all humanbeings…
(the inherent Buddha nature in all mankind..) we should evoke this spirit in us–though its tough.. yet the knowledge of goodness can be the 1st step and acting upon it becomes then easy!
The lady in this story showed an example of greatness by an act of kindness and by that act sowed the seeds of greatness in the receiver too who acted upon that too!!
it’s like one human revolution can change the world..

Que importante es desprenderse de los bienes materiales eso no lo puede hacer cualquiera, pero en esta historia tambien hay q rescatar al hombre q regresa en busqueda de algo mucho mas valioso q eso, algo mas valioso q el tesoro mas grande o la piedra mas preciosa, y que talvez no es tangible ni posible de regalar si la persona no esta dispuesta a aprender y a reconocer!
Cuanto daria por tener la sabiduria de los dos personajes de esta historia.
