10 SEC READING: Where the truth is

by Paulo Coelho on April 14, 2011

“Some disciples are always asking where the truth is,” said Maal-El.

“So one day I decided to point in one direction, trying to show them how important it is to follow a path, and not just to think about it.

“Instead of looking in the direction I had pointed, the man who had asked the question started examining my finger, trying to find out where the truth was hidden.

“When people seek out a master, they should be looking for experiences which can help them avoid certain obstacles.
“But unfortunately, reality is different: they adopt the law of minimum effort, trying to find answers to everything.”

“The person who accepts, without question, the truths of his master, will never find his/her own path.”

When seeking the truth
Rather than finding a way
Be the way…the truth

THIS…right here…right now
Is the truth and perfection
I’ve been searching for

Without a pretense
This presence is the real you
Truth personified

To see and be seen
Reveal Nothing is hidden
Living in the truth

So rely on life
It reflects your current truth
Nothing more or less

What ever you think
Separates you from the truth
So well never mind

Only he who knows
That the world is made of love
Has glimpsed the truth

Sound the voice of love
Can there be a greater truth
below or above

Forget the teacher
Even forget the teaching
Remember your Self

There are three truths: My truth; your truth and the absolute truth. We must, each of us, decide which to follow.

In the contemporary world, truth is relative, meaning if it is in conformity with what Science would explain, therefore that is TRUTH. In other words, Science speaks for Truth. However, in the earlier times, most specifically during the medieval period, truth is in conformity with Reason and Nature..If we are seeking for Truth..then definitely, the immediate answer would be only given to us by GOD…

We can learn how to analyze, criticize and synthesize information to supposedly arrive at truth. Then the heart has its own of way of providing input. How difficult it can be to conciliate our thoughts with our feelings. How difficult it is to summon the courage to do what we know and feel is right.

Dear Paulo, everyone of us looks for truth but the interesting part is “everyone of us” wants to look at it not seek it, for this one may follow a path but neglects the urge within his/her mind to question. Questions make us realize what we want to follow and why we want to follow. We need to seek the answers to seek the truth hidden thereby.

I think anyone who claims to be a master is not one. The only thing we can master is ourselves. It takes a whole lot more presence, humility and open heart to really listen to another person and help him/her with what is best for him/her not just sharing one’s own experiences or opinions of what we think is the best. Only when there is nothing to win or loose in a relationship, can we be the LIght for another, when we are the Light for the pure cause of being Light. To do this we must let go of our Egos which is hard in a world governed by Egos, so we need it for protection and then we’re right back at square 1. Or?

Hello Alexandra.

Well said. It’s when we let down our guard and just be with others when often the Light is ablre to come though to us and give us whatever it is we can use at the time.

Last time I truly did this was with a cat and a healing occured between both. It’s easier with animals. For, they are more honest and direct. Here’s an essay I wrote about it if you are so interested:

Hello Sir:

I can only speak from experience. I was a bit of an obstinant child and never listened to priests or ministers. I had the attitude that how can those with so much fear in their eyes stand as middle managers in the God game. I thought that I did not need any middle men and could just go directly to God or Jesus and this is what I did and it worked for me.

I am a firm believer in listening to one’s own Inner Voice or Self or Soul and allow Them to be my guru, but not blindly. I always have the last word. God, He, She, It or Good or the Source would not wish this our ask this of me, rather wish me to grow in Strength, Wisdom, Love, discernment and self-responsibility. I don’t even believe that All The Above would even ask me to bow. Love, Kindness and Respect would never ask or expect such behavior, this is the domain of ego. Eyeball to eyeball and shake hands in agreement.

If I had to give a location or direction to look to, I would saw, look to the heart. I believe that the heart is the central station between Heaven & Earth and the place of greatest power. A timeless place where all times meet.

Now, I will get off my soapbox and wish you and all others who read my comment a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,
Mike Hopkins

Light, walk my path, find own answers, look for signs, tokens..listen, observe, do, don’t, gather, filter, question, be guided, decide, choose, go, Be… ask, why? how? stumble..fall..wipe off the dust..stand tall.. with a knowledge found smile, continue or stay.. stuck in the middle not the way .. spread your wings, fly, whistle your tune, so Free, One with God, i See..

Experience is the best teacher and people only serve as guides providing tools to help on your path. Although it may not be transparent or have physical form, your pathway exists in the cradle of faith through works. Every day unconsciously or consciously we are walking through the darkness carrying our torches. It’s jus some people’s lights are brighter than others, but with a shift in positive consciousness then your light will burn brighter revealing a myriad of opportunities that await.

Yes I totally agree with you Paulo 100%….. I know this is why for the longest tiem no matter what path I would take it just never felt like it was the right one. Once I stopped searching for the truth in my endeavors my endeavors found me.
So now I am just waiting for the master to reappear because this time I am ready and I will see the truth for what it has in store for me. I can already see my path just waiting on my teacher…….

I think the truth lies in the hidden language of God around us, & Inside us..the truth only begins when you communicate with God, and it will be a long distance trip, you can collect a strange worlds of knowledge & experiences. it even doesn’t end with your death, but continues but to a higher level…Where’s the truth??? May be It’s the soul

But the most source of truth, lies dangerously in two realms: Magic, & Religion, where both test your faith unmercifully……

The truth is God..and before anyone can truly feel that miracle of faith that can do anything literally…One should really experience a lot of truths before that…

For example: the truth of suffering, the truth Of Love, the truth of Prayer, the truth of Joy, The truth Of being Unfair, and being Fair….Every test If you Pass it rightly, God rewards you with a partial truth that will leads you sequentially to the next bigger one….

All you Have to do is to be Open to whatever gets in your life, tries to learn from it..Not Blaming, & Cursing

“He who accepts his, without question, the truth of his master, will never find his own path.”It reminds me two great person’s sayings.Buddha told his deciples,”don’t listen your teacher, don’t listen your parents find the truth yourself. Further he said knowledge can be acquired by three ways,by listening, by reading, but this knowledge is not your knowledge, that is other people’s knowledge. The real knowledge is that which you acquire by your own experience.J.Krishnamurty also said similar thing, he said don’t become follower of anybody. By following other you will stop using your own mind.” So we have to find our own way by analyzing the old masters, because what they said the time was different, now the society is completely changed. We can’t hold the root of the tree to take the fruit,we have to leave the root and climb up.

Hii ur comments shows the positive side of urs. I agree wid what is being said about not following blindly. However, its all abt the master too. If v choose a good master then doing our action as per his direction is not bad. In our Indian Hindu mythology, the epic Bhagwatgeeta teaches us just to keep faith in the master and blindly do karma ( action). Krishna (god incarnation) asks Arjun ( his disciple) to forget everything and just believe in HIM. May be v can say v need a master like Lord Krishna itself then. What u say?

These words chase,
blurring vision,
where does the poem end,
the poet begin?
Armour is what they are,
and a sword to wield,
a shield and a mask,
that nothing can penetrate,
for they are air,
these words.

Between the lines;
nothing.
Behind the meaning;
emptiness.
A souls charter,
for meaningless banter.

A face of steel;
shiny,
hard,
full of appeal,
it’s smooth and calm,
rhythmic.

Until it ends,
when silence reigns,
and truth prevails!
Not these words,
It’s a mirror you see,
with holes in the middle,
that look like eyes,
they stare blankly,
carved out of air,
If it’s the poet you seek,
you will not find him there.

In other words, Truth does not lie in pretty images, or fancy words. Don’t look for your path in the eyes of another.

With love, Daniel

Some people may not be leaders, but nor are they followers, for, their knowledge are not acquired from books nor from the path and experience of others, but, merely from their own core being/experience/path.These same people can become the centre of attraction of so many through out the whole world, judged by so many, but their own judgement are derieved from their own wisdom/mind/heart and never do they judge from the mind of others. Some people always want to prove themselves smart, and believe that they outshining everybody through their scientific mind/judgement and startegies, but some silent observers can guess their games and how they want to delude the real scene ,when ,in fact the real truth can be the opposite.

For that reason Krishnamurti said that the master is the biggest obstacle of the disciple. He will depend of him so much that he will not think or seek. He expect that the master gift him the realization in a silver plate.

Por esa razón Krishnamurti decia que el Guru es el mas grande obstáculo del dicipulo. Por que el dependerá tanto del que no pensara ni buscara por el. El espera que el Guru le regale la realización en bandeja de plata.

jnanananda, it is only partly true that Masters are biggest obstacle for truth realisation. Because Bhakti yog is also a path to self realisation and Bhakti yog requires total devotion towards the master, which means the courage to walk on the path whatever shown by the master.

When one says master is not needed, he is referring to Gyan Yog. If you are on Gyan Yog, you will have to doubt everything… Ironically, I see many people following Krishnamurthy even though he says that you have to pave your own way (not to walk behind anyone)! If you have to pave your own way, and that is the only way, why the followers of Krishnamurthy dare to leave him behind and walk their own way?

In this aspect, Buddha teaches us both Gyan Yog and Bhakti yog. He says ‘Appo Dipo Bhava’ (be your own light)to the ones who think they have enough brain and courage to find their own truth. And then he also recommends another path: “Buddham Saranam Gachhami” (I devote to the Knowledgable one). This is bhakti yog recommended to those who don’t like arguments but who can easily surrender to a master.

The question as to which path is better is totally irrevant. The question should be which path am I fit for? It depends on my capabilities… Both path lead to same point, the point, the apex.

Om!!!

Humility and Truth must go with you! To your right and to your left. And once you become a teacher, be kind, be firm, and be true to your students.
