Character of the week: Kandinsky

by Paulo Coelho on July 3, 2011

Painting is an art.
And art is a power that should be aimed at developing the soul.
If art does not do this job, the abyss that separates us from God is left without a bridge.

The artist owes his talent to God and has to settle this debt.
To do this, he has to work hard, know that he is free in his art but not in his commitment to life.

Everything he feels and thinks is part of the raw material with which to improve the spiritual atmosphere around him.

Beauty, whether in art or in a woman, cannot be empty; it has to be at the service of humankind and the world.

The true work of art is born from the ‘artist’: a mysterious, enigmatic, and mystical creation.
It detaches itself from him, it acquires an autonomous life, becomes a personality, an independent subject, animated with a spiritual breath, the living subject of a real existence of being.

The artist is not a ‘Sunday child’ for whom everything immediately succeeds. He does not have the right to live without duty. The task that is assigned to him is painful, it is a heavy cross for him to bear.

There is no must in art because art is free.

Wassily Kandinsky

“Technically, every work of art comes into being in the same way as the cosmos – by means of catastrophes, which ultimately create out of the cacophony of the various instruments that symphony we call the music of the spheres. The creation of the work of art is the creation of the world.” Wassily Kandinsky.

I was searching in the Internet Kandinsky’s biography. He was an amazing man. A Researcher of the Truth. A Theosophist. The above sentence reminds me what I had written here a few days ago about … cacophony, symphony and … MELODY = μελωδία and CREATION! Vibrations, Geometry, the mixing of the colors. He was a MYSTIC and an .. ALCHEMIST! Every creation of ART in any form, I think, is the Creation of a new … UNIVERSE, Cosmos. A book, your books, dearest Paulo Coelho are your creations and we are so lucky to … enter in them and touch the SOUL of the World, the Rose.

I think Kandinsky took what “had become” ordinary, the point, the line and the plane – and reminded us that they are extraordinary!

The best quote I ever read about painting as an art is; “A painting in a museum probably hears more foolish remarks than anything else in the world.” – (Edmond and Jules De Goncourt).

Three years ago I was lucky enough to catch one of the biggest collections of Kandinsky’s work in Munich one cold Christmas. I have to say it was wonderful in every way and I was able as a viewer to mentally chew through all of the years of his work from beginning to end.

“It detaches itself from him, it acquires an autonomous life, becomes a personality, an independent subject, animated with a spiritual breath, the living subject of a real existence of being.”

I will never forget when this moment occurred with my dream.
It finally ended a long period to get it “out of the gut”, to deliver the “child”.

at the moment it became autonomous, it has taught me. my thinking about it and my perception has been influenced by it. it teaches me to grow.
& darn … I am now limping behind it. it’s me now who brings the constraints and have to recognize again and again how my weaknesses are tripping me.
it is safe, but not me.

Much of what we term art is the creation of the madness of the mind that believes in and perpetuates the so called abyss…
The recognition of our divinity and inherent beauty allows us to express that truth in all our endevours be it art, business, sport or just living a beautiful life…

When mind is master
Then all manner of madness
is made to matter

Be very careful
Perception is conception
Mind what you give life

Be true to feeling
The heart of your life’s purpose
Mind it’s unfolding

Where is the beauty
When you are living your truth
It shines from within

You make it perfect
With appreciation of
It’s inherent truth

Manifestation
Reflects inherent quality
That is its beauty

Marvelous Mystery
How I look is what I see
Coming back to me

Painting you happy
With my bright colourful words

To understand the art is to understand the soul of an artist.

Guerreiro amado, gostei mto do q escreveu.
Esse texto me fez refletir bastante.
Quem escreve desnuda a alma.

throw everything aside and pave the way to become an artist…. ooooops I did that already, but it makes me wanna do it again.

I get a glimpse of understanding now why those married couples get married with each other a 2nd time… hahaha

Anyway, Kandinsky uses words in such a majestic way that I ask if he was a writer or a painter.

This is so beautifully said. We are God’s sparks and whatever our talents may be, they do not belong to us, but to everybody. It is beautiful when an artist understands that he is only an instrument through which God manifests himself.

hi,and then… each artist find his own “tempo”, his own rules, his own time, his own material or not, sometimes he could share his art with the others, sometimes not, sometimes he works hard, sometimes not, sometimes young, sometimes old, sometimes alone, sometimes with a team, he’s still free to discovery his own way, nobody can find this way, except him.

THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for this quote, and the comments. Recently I had been questioning if I was on the right path and prayed for signs, plus looking at my past to understand. This really struck me – “Art is a power that should be aimed at developing the soul”. To take up a little of the readers time – I often wondered why people encouraged me to write of my experiences, ‘they are so painful who would want to know? I’d say, but one day it struck me – a story that happens to an innocent teenage girl – based on experience and imagination, the future and past, the rock bottom and how to come out the other side, all combined…and how does one express it to reach others, give others an understanding or to touch their hearts and feel less alone – this is the soul I hope. But this I had to do visually as the story was in a screenplay form, plus since then have been writing other stories. The problem is getting stories made – as screenplays cost soooooooo much, but the Kandinsky quote has given me more surety and courage to continue as long as I can. THANK YOU Mr. Coelho.

When I use my hands, they are guided by god – to express emotions or tell a story. Sometimes, I do not even understand because the work is not meant for me, but for another to find. How does one put a price tag on something from the soul, for sharing?. Looking deeper to find inner beauty – It’s what’s inside that counts. All glory to god, for the gifts. Thank you Paulo : )

Gozado!
Beijos!
Fica com Deus e na paz!

Being an artist myself, A vision forms in your mind as if being poured into it from your soul. It is like as if you are set afire that won’t be quinched until you create that piece of work.
You are in communion with your medium and the artist brushes the paper as a lover will caress their mate.
Love is poured into the canvess where the viewer later feels reaching out at them as they admire it.

When artists understand that they are ‘channels’ of a certain inspiration, that might be divine, they will become humble about their role. I think there are many artists around us that has no possibilities to develop their skills due, sometimes, to karmic issues that have to be solved first; it is necessary to be patient to wait for the moment of freedom to express the art skills – I know what I’m talking about myself! ;))
I also feel that the art only has its real value when it is, as you say, to serve mankind and the world to inspire others to find their own way.

I like the phrase; ‘Beauty…has to be at the service of humankind and the world. Once, visiting Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, I went with the intention to find at least one piece of art, that would talk to my sense of beauty. Can you believe, I didn’t find one single item? Walking up and down, on several floors, everything exposed was gloomy, drab, hard, harsh, chaotic and I will say ugly. Am I such a classic that I cannot understand modern? When art is seen as therapy where the artist splash out all the anger inside, I guess it serves humankind, but can it be called beauty?

Reply

Savita Vega June 21, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Yes, Heart, well said! Your description of your trip to the Modern Art Museum in Oslo reminds me of a recent trip I took to a museum of modern art with my daughter. I looked and looked for something that she might be able to appreciate, but there was much blood and gore, and many other things that I would simply deem as utter monstrosities: a painting of a dead rabbit being skinned, a silicone sculpture of a naked man sitting on a toilette, some assemblage that looked like the remnants of a car crash….

As for the aspect of beauty, I’m not sure that all art has to be exactly beautiful. I mean, life itself can be pretty horrific. But I have seen paintings and art photography, for example, depicting some truly horrific events – wars, natural disasters, etc. – and even though there was no “beauty” to be found in the surface, these works spoke to me on some deeper human level. I came away with a sense of having gained something from the encounter. I might have left feeling a bit disturbed or even sad, but not empty. These works, I would say, served humanity, although they were not at all beautiful to behold.

But then I have also been to exhibits such as the one you seem to be describing, and left only with the feeling that my senses had been assaulted, and to no end whatsoever – for no purpose. Similarly, I have read books where I felt that the author actually abused the sensibilities of the reader. Many modern blockbuster films give me this same sense, with their graphic depictions of gratuitous violence. Some may call this “art,” but I see no value there, nothing worthy of the term “art” at all.

Sherry June 19, 2009 at 5:55 pm

Life doesn’t get any better than this: when your favorite author quotes your favorite painter! I love it when you find something you believe in from someone you believe in, it’s as if life makes sense all over again.

Art it the bridge for God.. It is a gift that we have a duty to ..cultivate to reach Him. We have to transform the raw material and ‘colour’ the spiritual atmosphere, the aura around us.

‘Beauty, whether in art or in a woman, cannot be empty; it has to be at the service of humankind and the world’.

I wonder what is the meaning of this sentence. The word ‘EMPTY’ regarding beauty!
For me beauty is the expression in the material world of the inner beauty. So beauty is never ..empty. It is the Light and Whiteness in expression.. I may not have understand the exact meaning. ;]

u maynot be the only one !

i don’t see why being of service to mankind is paramont. the physical beauty is only a manifestation of the inner beauty, but then author probably indicated towards beautiful woman ( and [pray how can tjhey be of service to mankind, by posing naked for PETA, by adopting slumdogs, by being ‘available’ to humakind!

author says something about development of soul, etc etc. tell me was van gough creating his painting for development fo soul. to me it appears that development of soul is not a prerequisite, even any knowledge of soul is not a prerequiste; a work done sincerely is prerequitse, then whether it is a work of art, like painting or poetry or even making a shoe, a weapon, or even writing one more computer program ! anything done with sinceretity, where one can say to himself ( and hence to ones’ god ) that one did all one could ( of course without loosing the fun element, for if fun is lost everything is lost ); anything done with sincerity becomes a work of art, a thing of beauty, depends how penetrative are one’s eye to see the beauty.

Everything is so subtil … Humility and sincerity, yes, sure, fondations … and a pre-requisite for me essential AWARENESS. I found out that even if my mind “thought or said I am beauty inside”, and that I communicate or act upon “a sincere motive and desire”, my action or whatever derived from a subtil fear, a subtil doubt, a subtil defensive, a subtil uncounscious state of mind … beauty is being authentic, true, and love sometimes demands to hold position, to accept that the other will react … like one that looks at a painting and do not like it because it reveals an “emptiness” in his beauty …

“Art is a power that should be aimed at developing the soul. If art does not do this job, the abyss that separates us from God is left without a bridge.” Recently I’ve been looking at schools for my daughter. Found a great Waldorf school, but then they announced that they’re closing their doors (Ah, the economy!). So then I found an excellent school of the arts. Still I’m hesitant. I prefer Waldorf, even if this means we have to move to a different city than originally planned. People question my decision. They don’t understand it. An arts school should be perfect, especially considering her interests. I grapple with words, trying to convey the reason for my hesitancy, but I can’t seem to express it. This quote sums it up perfectly! It the arts school, ART is the focus. In the Waldorf schools, the focus is the development of the soul and the whole being of the child. Arts instruction is included, but not without recognition of the fact that the soul is the source of that art, and unless the soul is healthy and vibrant, the art produced will be empty. Thank you for this quote, Paulo. It has helped me to clarify my ideas, not only on education, but on art in general.

Sometimes I go to art openings, or even in the encounter of certain post-modern forms of literature (especially poetry), I find myself face-to-face with something which, in a way, is admirable – I can clearly see the mastery, how the artist has shattered the norms of convention, how far they have departed from the traditional, how “new” and “fresh” the forms are – but I still feel this keen sense of “emptiness.” This affects me deeply and makes me feel even a little physically ill. It is like to have the eyes (or in the case of poetry – the ears, the mind) assaulted by the intense, the extreme, and yet that which is essentially devoid of substance. The only meaning is meaninglessness. This sort of art, or literature, to me is like the sound of fingernails scraping across a chalkboard – it grates on my nerves and rattles my senses. It disturbs more than it uplifts my soul.

I like, too, that Kandinsky mentions the beauty of a woman here, and how that beauty too should be at the service of mankind, and not empty. This makes me feel a little bit better about not exactly being a supermodel.

I am really! …… thank you ! thank you ! thank you! I like Kandisky, of her paint to its papers. I feel intensely as well the one as the other one.

Of what the eye sees in general and of what the soul manages to extract from it of private individual! It is so true the life under all its forms and her colors. Of the circle in the line or the square in the point…

If the life is in triangle, thank you Mr Kandisky of the so well said !

Thank you Mr Coelho to have given a place to him in your site.

Just living is an art in itself! As I child, I remember asking, when in my room, and I was like 4 or 5, “Why God did you give me the gift of life, for I recognize that that is a gift of high importance”. Being present and always in that way of mind, of gratitude and of “I have something special to accomplish” is important for me in all the domains of my life, be it work, at pleasure times, with family, as a parent, a friend, a wife, a Child of God. For me, life is a gift, an important moment in time, a time between two times, that has to be taken seriously and has to be meaningful for my soul, for my soul is the one to be considered and has to utilize all the learnings acquired for reasons, acquire others to come closer to her goal and change others to again come closer to her goal, her goal being to gain her place where God intended it for her. When a talent comes to surface, is there or comes back to life, it is important to try to find the “true reason” that my soul had in acquiring such and to develop such. To find out, to recollect memories, to renew with the forces of the gifts, as the transporter of my soul, I need to let my soul be in charge and put my personality to its service. Relations and communications, everything evolves around those. So, to find why and what to communicate, for me and my brothers and sisters, for the accomplishment of the Will of the Cosmic God. And it is a journey that does not stop, and a journey that demands to stop and listen, to silence and listen, to let the unconscious become conscious, to let the irrational come and put the rational in a mode of communication with it, a rational accepts the whole picture that seems at the beginning illogical and ask God to help it give the true meaning, put the rational to the service of the accomplishment of a mission that surpasses the conventional mind.

developing the soul is a by product ! if a painter carries on his work, sincerely, sincerity is the key, then development fo soul is automatic. if u set it as developing the soul, as your goal, and then decide what u are going to do, then in all probablity u will fail. just like most christain missionaries, they die no closer to god or to themselves ( which incidentally is same ) because from the beginning they are more focuse on converting more and more people to christanity rather than trying to themselves get closer to christ.

humankind has to at service of beauty, the world has to be at service of beauty, then only will beauty come to humankind to the world.

Salut!

I think that some artists try and tame the lions of art and say; all art does not need to be beautiful… yet we all like to look at beautiful art and the strange and obscure seem to fail the test of time.
