When You Thought I Wasn’t Looking

When you thought I wasn’t looking
You hung my first painting on the refrigerator
And I wanted to paint another.

When you thought I wasn’t looking
You fed a stray cat
And I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn’t looking
You baked a birthday cake just for me
And I knew that little things were special things.

When you thought I wasn’t looking
You said a prayer
And I believed there was a God that I could always talk to.

When you thought I wasn’t looking
You kissed me good-night
And I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn’t looking
I saw tears come from your eyes
And I learned that sometimes things hurt—
But that it’s alright to cry.

When you thought I wasn’t looking
You smiled
And it made me want to look that pretty too.

When you thought I wasn’t looking
You cared
And I wanted to be everything I could be.

When you thought I wasn’t looking—
I looked . . .
And wanted to say thanks
For all those things you did
When you thought I wasn’t looking.

What a lovely poem, I wish a certain person whom I knew in the past and really miss would read it and understand what I feel. And forgive me for all that I did when I was younger and naive .

  10. Amalia Tumlos says:

The poem is beautiful and inspiring to do things for the people we care and love … though physical eyes may not see but the heart feels and remember all the goodness and kindness and that really matters to touch the heart with sincerity of our action.

Thanks Mr. Paulo for sharing, love it.

    Estimado Paulo;

who is the artist of the image posted with the poem?

  19. This beautiful poem has an unknow author. Paulo did not write it! Will be nice from Mr. Cohelo to clarify that. My thoughts

    1. Paulo Coelho says:

the name of the author is below the illustration

    2. Heimo Kruschinski says:

Yes, you just have to have enough people behind you. Then you need not worry about, what lies before you. Dear Paulo, if you should ever miss the feeling of loneliness. I have always on my balcony a place for you. Includes coffee and cigarettes. Also, a good meal if you like. Bring wine, a box as possible. I wish you a pleasant evening.

      All a wonderful night

    3. Marcela Derisio says:

Very misleading Mr. Cohelo. Under the title of the poem reads: by Paulo Coelho, under the illustration the name of the author.

  20. Jillian from Amsterdam says:

WOW! what an amazing poem… how sincere!
what a precious gift God gave you to be able to put words to become one.

  25. xaris says:

  26. yash says:

I’ve seen myself flowing away with her,
Playing with her, jumping with joy.
I’ve stretched my arms wide and embraced her.
I’ve soaked in her zillion drops of love.
    I call her Rain.

I’ve seen her come and go.
Her absence is a melancholic lull.
She stirs my world into a wild passion.
    She’s mysterious, over-whelming and unpredictable.
    I call her Wind.

I can never shut her out completely,
She always finds her way into me.
Without her I’m frightened, blind and lost.
I need her to make my life bright.
    I call her Light.

She’s my love, she’s my life.
She’s the reason why I’m alive.
She touched my soul and made me breathe.
She held my hand and made me see.
We parted ways and said goodbye
    But she’s still with me
In the Rain, in the Wind, in the Light.

    1. Divya Bajaj says:

      would change her to him

  27. The hurt seems to be there already. It’s just the question, whether this hurt grows by staying or leaving, or whether you were right from the start and there is the third alternative of not being boiled alive like frogs that we are..

..I choose to believe in ingenuity and indefinite number of positive alternatives. <3 We shall overcome in joy, abundance and happiness. LOL!

  28. Irma Aguilar-Olivas says:

  41. Genie_Girl says:

AWWWWWW WHAT A SWEET, LOVELY POEM. “AWWW MAESTRO DE INSPIRACION”" ONLY YOU TO WRITE THE CUTES THINGS.
lET ME TELL YOU THIS,EVERY SINGLE LINE TOUCHED MY LITTLE HEART; SO MUCH SO THAT IT EVEN MADE ME CRY.
AS I WAS READING IT, I REMEMBERED THAT AT SOME POINT IN MY LIFE, SOME ONE VERY SPECIAL HAS DONE ALL THIS THINGS TO ME. AND SOME I HAVE DONE TO THOSE SPECIAL PEOPLE WHO I HOLD DEAR AS WELL.
IT IS INTERESTING TO SEE HOW SOMETIMES, WE FORGET THAT IT IS THE SMALL DETAILS WITH GREAT THOUGHT, THE ONES THAT REALLY MATTER. A PRAYER, A KISS, A HUG, A SMILE AND LOVE THIS ARE THE THINGS THAT ARE SO IMPORTANT AND WE DARE TO TAKE FOR GRANTED AT TIMES.

I LOVE THE WHOLE POEM, BUT ONE OF MY FAVORITE LINES IS THIS: “When you thought I wasn’t looking
You cared And I wanted to be everything I could be.”

THIS PRECISE LINE MADE AN IMPACT IN ME, FOR IT FORTELLS HOW WHEN KNOWING THAT SOME ONE CARES FOR YOU IT MAKES YOU WANT TO BE BETTER. IT MAKES YOU FEEL UNSTOPPABLE, AS IF THERE ARE NO IMPOSSIBLES THAT CAN STAND IN YOUR WAY. IT HOLDS THE POWER OF “I BELIVE IN YOU, THEREFORE YOU CAN”
    AND I LOVE IT.

THANK YOU PAULO FOR POSTING COOL POEMS AND STORIES LIKE THIS. ‘CAUSE EVEN IF SOMETIMES YOU THINK WE ARE NOT LOOKING, WE CARE AND WE ARE YOUR LOYAL FANS WHO LOVE TO READ YOUR BOOKS AND EVERYTHING THAT YOU SHARE WITH US. SO FOR THAT THANK YOU.
YOU ARE IN OUR PRAYERS, YOU ARE IN OUR THOUGHTS AND WE LOVE YOU WITH A SINCEAR AND RESPECTFULL LOVE BINDED BY GOD AND THE UNIVERSE. NEVER STOP WRITING. YOUR TALENT IS A BLESSING AND IT IS WONDERFULL THAT YOU SHARE IT WITH THE WORLD. SO KEEP IT UP AND HUGS AND PURPLE SMILES TO YOU.

German Translation of this wonderful poem

    Und wollte Danke sagen
Für all jene Dinge, die du getan hast
Wenn du dachtest, dass ich nicht gesehen habe
