As soon as he died, Juan found himself in a gorgeous place, surrounded by all the comfort and beauty he had dreamed of.

A fellow dressed in white approached him and said, “You have the right to have whatever you want; any food, pleasure or amusement.”

Charmed, Juan did everything he dreamed of doing during his life. After many years of pleasures, he sought the fellow in white and asked, “I have already experienced everything I wanted. Now I need to work in order to feel useful.”

“I am sorry,” said the fellow in white, “but that is the only thing I am unable to give you. There is no work here.”

“How terrible,” Juan said annoyed, “I will spend eternity dying of boredom! I’d much rather be in hell!”
The man in white approached him and said in a low voice:

“And where do you think you are?”

Rob Bell describes something similar in his excellent book Love Wins, a world of boredom for all eternity, for many that would be hell.

Heaven is not some otherworldly place. Is that all life has to offer, we hang around waiting to go some place else?

Heaven is here on earth, it is what we choose of our life here and now. Or we turn it into hell.

We are the ones who have the choice, to turn swords into ploughshares, spears into pruning hooks, new wine will drip from the mountains, all nations, that is all colours, all races, all creeds.

But we prefer to create hell on earth.

Fundamentalists tell us that if we do not believe what they believe we will go to hell not heaven. They are of course the self-appointed chosen ones who will go to heaven.

Hell is not a mythical place. It is here on earth, we create it.

It is Rwanda. It is the nine-year-old girl raped by her mother’s boyfriend or the parish priest. It is Iraq as it descends into hell.

    - The Truth as Iraq descends into Hell

And yet even in Iraq, as it descends into hell, the people find joy, love wins.

I find myself agree with your comments to a great extent, you are right, I see Heaven or hell is our making on Earth, we create it, we live it and we turn it to those around us.

  7. Keith says:

    Brilliant!

In Love Wins by Rob Bell he makes the same point.

Good history! In this moment of my life I am unemployed and I feel useless, and unmotivated. In first days of vacations it is wonderful, some time to relax and to be with myself. But after 2 mouths I am tired and really feel like I am in hell. Now I can understand how important is to work, or just have something to do. That is why I enjoyed this text. Thank you!

This story is so true. I need work and responsibility to feel that I have accomplished something useful in life. The problem is that I just received a lay-off notice from my employer. I’ve done this job for 27 years and I do enjoy it. Hopefully this is only a temporary lay-off or another door will open for me. Thank-you for the posting.

I remember that ‘The Twilight Zone’ had an episode with the same story line. It was called “A Nice Place to Visit” @ Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Nice_Place_to_Visit

When I saw it as a kid I thought it was a wonderful episode.

Pleasurable experiences are not so pleasurable if there is no contrasting experience…. a meal is enjoyable because there is hunger, work is enjoyable because there is rest, a clean bed is pleasurable because it had many crumbs and dog hairs earlier. Without the less pleasurable experiences there is no way to distinguish when you are in a more pleasurable time or not.
We all need to work, not necessarily paid work, but be useful, be it caring for children, helping others or building a house, writing books or reading for the blind. Then we can enjoy the ‘rest’.
The rest of life or the rest we have when tired.
A lovely little reading I think.

It may take time to decide which is better…
Anyway people will always miss what they are short of…time, work or vice versa….

  18. Moya says:

It’s a story folks, read it, let it go. It’s not meant to be perfect, it’s not meant to be taken literally. It’s just fantasy, your insights are your own.

That said, NOTHING on this earth is as powerful as words, especially the written kind. Do not underestimate words, neither your own or other’s.. I have personally experienced that this christmas, talking to and guiding a friend with psychological problems, to the point where the person actually identifies all the “cameras” in the rooms, as being himself! “I am the camera!”, and then realizing that from himself all concepts and emotions sprouts. Hopefully, that friend is able to take it further from there and learn to distinguish fantasy from reality.

Me, not being afraid of “cameras” or any words surrounding them, was able to guide, but the realization and sentence was this friend’s very own.

It was just words, but from the heart and sincerity, it may transform lives. I’ve witnessed it many times already now enough to recognize it and trust it. May more people find the strength of truth and trust and speak out with great skill and compassion!

Can a heaven turn hell …………………………………….
    Well it seems so :-))))))))

  20. Melle says:

I think of the title of Delmore Schwartz’s story “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities” when reading this.

On my novice path the first thing I realized is that achieving dreams
doesn’t beget pure pleasure, which was hard to accept. Then, my dream started encompassing giving and responsibility to achieve and help others achieve their dreams. Too often I got in the way of other’s dreaming and life .

    Harder then it sounds!

  21. Well says:

Who cooks in this hell and does the dishes? Work is what needs to be done, not more and not less. Writing is no work.
