2012: Manual for conserving paths

by Paulo Coelho on December 31, 2011

PORTUGUES CLICAR AQUI>> Manual de conservar caminhos
ESPANOL CLICAR AQUI >> Manual de conservar caminos

1] The path begins with a crossroads. There you can stop and think what direction to follow. But don’t spend too much time thinking or you’ll never leave the spot. Once you have taken the first step, forget the crossroads forever or you will always torture yourself with the useless question: “did I take the right path?”

2] The path doesn’t last for ever. It is a blessing to travel the path for some time, but one day it will come to an end, so always be prepared to leave it at any moment. Don’t get too used to anything. Neither to the hours of euphoria, nor to the endless days when everything seems so difficult and progress is so slow. Don’t forget that sooner or later an angel will appear and your journey will reach an end.

3] Honor your path. It was your choice, your decision, and just as you respect the ground you step on, that ground will respect your feet. Always do what is best to conserve and keep your path and it will do the same for you.

4] Be well equipped. Carry a small rake, a spade, a penknife. Understand that penknives are no use for dry leaves, and rakes are useless for herbs that are deep-rooted. Know also what tool to use at each moment.

5] The path goes forward and backward. At times you have to go back because something was lost, or else a message to be delivered was forgotten in your pocket. A well tended path enables you to go back without any great problems.

6] Take care of the path before you take care of what is around you. Don’t be distracted by the dry leaves at the edges or by the way that others are looking after their paths. Use your energy to tend and conserve the ground that accepts your steps.

7] Be patient. Sometimes the same tasks have to be repeated, like tearing up weeds or closing holes that appear after unexpected rain. Don’t let that annoy you – that is part of the journey.

8] Paths cross. People can tell what the weather is like. Listen to advice, and make your own decisions. You alone are responsible for the path that was entrusted to you.

9] Nature follows its own rules. In this way, you have to be prepared for sudden changes in the fall, slippery ice in winter, the temptations of flowers in spring, thirst and showers in the summer. Make the most of each of these seasons, and don’t complain about their characteristics.

10] Make your path a mirror of yourself. By no means let yourself be influenced by the way that others care for their paths. You have your soul to listen to, and the birds to tell what your soul is saying. Let your stories be beautiful and pleasant to everything around you. Above all, let the stories that your soul tells during the journey be echoed at each and every second of the path.

11] Love your path. And may the Lord guide you and help you every single day in 2012

I just read this last night and copied/pasted on my phone wallpaper. This morning I went to the Ocean and looked up into the sky. It was the purest hue if blue intercepted by two streaks of white crossroads. I had to photograph this…. “Now i can prove my connection to some divnity.” I thought foolishly

Then I awoke to the message, i must choose one path also.

Thank you for planting the seed.

Hi, Paulo~
It’s a great honor to write to you.
I never imagined like this untill last week, I firstly visted your blog.
I’ve read your books and been impressed by them.
They’ve been nutrition in my life.
Sometimes I’m very curious how you feel like that and express what you think so precisely.
I mean you seem to know the core of something.

From the messages, I was specially encouraged by,
‘Don’t forget that sooner or later an angel will appear and your journey will reach an end.’
I think I surely have to pray more often.
Thank you Coelho for being with us in this world.^^

Dear Paulo,

I now understand somehow, why you said: “By no means let yourself be influenced by the way that others care for their paths. ” to us.

I was reading the interview between you and Juan Arias, and knew your childhood from your words, and how you had to fight for your dreams. No wonder, you would say these words. If you had softened or given in, your dreams would have been long killed, and the world would have no Paulo Coelho as a writer.

Fortunately, my family never forbid me from pursuing my dreams, and helped me with all means to achieve them. So I really had no problem with them.

But funnily, like you said, you thank them now, because they made your wishes stronger. I realized now, what I got or achieved too easily as a kid were often thrown away during the years, even when I was actually very good at them. But what I had to fight for or work hard on, are kept to be my real enthusiasm. :-)

So I guess, there is a fine line between killing a child’s dream and make it a bit hard for the kid to achieve, so he has to fight for it, and later cherishes what he achieves.

love

Dear Mr. Coelho,
If you ever get to read this entry, please accept my gratitude for sharing with us your gift of wisdom and vision. Today I start my path. One change that, if accomplished, will give such quality to my life as it’s never had. I’m not into 12 steps programs and such. I believe in your wisdom, for you have been there, a long time ago.

God bless you and your dear family.

Well put.

It is blessing to have found your work at this moment. Presently, I am at a crossroads. The path is chosen but there are a few small projects to attend to before I embark. And preparations to be made. A Chinese friend once told me that his grandfather said “you never waste time sharpening knives”. That is what I am doing now.

Your perspective is, and will be, a help in this journey. Thank you.

Dear Paulo,

It took me years to write you.
You are my wise inspiration which I will always look up to.
As the words are magical for me I read yours in Polish, French and English finding new meanings in every language.
Words can be the tool to carry on the information but in your case they mirror your heart and soul. Every letter, dot and coma is so real and natural.
You have so much courage in you and determination to share.
Life would be so much poorer if I have not known your books.
This year is very important to me as I decided to write and share.
I did not choose the form yet not stylistics, the language is chosen that is important.
I feel ready to write and I will do all what it takes to stay on this path for as long as I can.
It is exciting journey.
Truly exploratory and leading to understanding world better.
Nothing is established yet and that gives me the feeling of being in love for the first time.
Wonderful experience.
I wish you a lot of atoms which create a circular motion of movement. Even silence and stillness is a movement in the bigger picture. Thank you for every word ever written.
They mean so much…
Happy 2012!

Dear Paulo,

I just want to thank you for all the light you brought to my life already. I wish you and your beloved ones a happy new year from the deepest of my heart.

I use this Blog also to tell you, that you occourd in my dream a few nights ago. You have to know, that I’m dreaming alot, even lucid dreaming and my dreams are very often very clear and loaded with tough emotions…

Now I want to share my dream with you and everyone else who is interested in:

I live nearby Davos, in Switzerland and I know you know this area too. We got plenty of snow during the last few days and in my dream you travelled to Davos in your Car and get stuck in the snow. I was walking by and wanted to help you, pushing the car back to the road. I reconized you and we started talking like good old friends. (none of the content that I would remember, unfortunately) I do speak spanish, but very little, but in my dream, we changed from english to spanish and back…finally I pushed the car back to the street and you drove away. I was laughing and thinking, that nobody would believe me, that I met you like this! ;-)

I hoped alot to join the dinner in Italy, but it was not meant to be, so I join it in my thoughts.

Enjoy 2012, take care and have fun. Thanks again….

Reto

Thank you for your wise words Mr. Coelho. But, frankly, sometimes I get confused, Lord leads us one way and your soul and heart wants another path. Strange. Once you feel, you stuck half way, as if Lord saying you have to continue my Son carrying your cross. I do not know sometimes what to do.

Dear Sheen,
I have made my decision. I’m taking the path. Your conclusions from Mr. Coelho’s writing cannot be more opportune for what I need. Please allow me to borrow them and use them in my path, which will be very difficult and kind of a lonely one. Mr. Coelho has inspired me since I learn about the changes he had to make like conquering his cocaine addiction and not going back to it. His writings and your conclusions are coming with me in this path.
God bless you both.

Exato o que vc tuitou hoje, nada acontece por acaso. Absolutamente nada. Creio nisso com toda fé;

I should have sent this thank you earlier, but now’s as good a time as any other. I got the letter you sent, and although I dunno how or where you got my address, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The words “Having the courage to take the steps we always wish to is the only way to show that we trust God,” were exactly what was needed. Thanks again for the simplicity and wisdom of your words. And may all the inspiration and peace you help spread be returned to you a thousand fold. Happy New Year Paulo + everyone else!

it looks to me that are 2 processes involved when standing at the crossroad. I believe that my rational part thinks much longer that I stay at the crossroad & still able to make a decision while my unconscious linked with my intuition are already working & moving on. the rational part can be deceptive then.

I thought that I would still stay at the crossroad but this is not true. just making a kind of inventory what happened so far, I can see I am already walking a path.
what a surprise :o)

the path I have now, it is not just a mirror, it represent my whole life. it is a “closing of the circle” but with a different meaning as it is generally used. what I mean is that it looks as if a lot of events & actions have been in my life, years, years ago, & they all have now a meaning for my path now. when I suddenly begin to remember little, old events & there is the “ahh, I understand now”. it is these tiny events that keep me going, that give my whole work a spiritual touch. thus the path is so spiritual, but it looks so impossible to pull it into the life of today, to the “earthy” life.

I love the photo. it looks “cute” . I think it is the leaning on each other & providing a stable unit & your smiling faces that is just good to look at.
a Happy & healthy 2012 to you both <3

As a guest teacher in my sons high school senior literature class, I had to teach a “novel” to my son’s class. Being a Philosophy major myself, I had very little interest and/or knowledge in Fiction. Your writing however, was the PERFECT marriage of what I was “assigned” to do, and what I “wanted” to do, which was equip these bright and beautiful senior high school students with the message of philosophical tools that they could actually use for the rest of their lives: their hearts, their intuition, their passions, their “callings”, their ability to accept what “is” and to be able to roll spiritually with the waves and the wind, and to limit attachments and to create openings for love/peace/joy. Thank you so much for being that modern day philosopher/writer, and for creating that book that allowed me to point out to these kids their best weapons, their best compass, their best tool kid (inside) that they can use for the rest of their lives as the move forward to college and begin to rule our societies. THANK YOU

Wish you a great new year.
Almost three years ago I left this little prayer by St. Jacob’s sepulchrum in Santiago de Compostela (I tried to translate it from Italian to English):

“Help me to come out of myself, being myself.
Make me lapse into the flow and gain energy from it.
Let me follow Your steps and trust the way I’m walking on.
Show me the Master in every meeting e let me meet him in humility and peace”

Could be trite, but I think it could be a good wishing for this new year.

My best wishes and greetings!

Although I had a two year head start (I was born in 1945), I find myself faced with the need to run in order to keep up. Thank you for clearing some of the brush from the path.
