“Vai morrer em 30 dias”

by Paulo Coelho on February 25, 2012

UPDATE: I will record a CoelhoOffice on the subject, as I am receiving hundreds of emails on the subject. Please wait another 14 days. But to cut a long story short, to please Monica, my friend, I decided to do an stress test on 28/Nov/2011. When I finished, the doctor told me “you are going to die in 30 days”. And I had no pain, nothing (they call it a silent heart attack). I went through an angioplasty, and TWO DAYS LATER I was back to my daily 2 hr walk and to do my daily archery exercises (remember that every time I open a bow, it corresponds to to pick a 22 kg luggage, and normally I shoot 20 arrows a day).
The events I tell in this video (I posted it because today the news were leaked in Brasil) took place between 28 and 30 Nov 2011

Querido Paulo…

A heart attack waiting to happen…

I thought that you had the surgery and then got an infection from the stent, and that is why you had 30 days to live.

Great news then, all is well :)

Dear Paulo, have you asked yourself:
“Why happens this just to me?”
In the end I think we have to accept and make the best.
But “diagnoses” always such a strange thing, or?

Gostariade ter os modelos antigos e normais. Assim como aquele descrito no livro “A aarte cavalheresca do Arqueiro Zen”. Sabe aonde encontrar esses modelos aqui no RJ?

Dear Paulo,

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

With love,

Arto

My eyes have seen more beauty, than my heart could ever hold
Outside and all around us, a picture no camera can take and it is cold
But we all have stories of fires, that we love to tell,
but it’s the fires within the fires that drew me to you

Of course you wouldn’t die in 30 days!!
Firstly, you know when you will, you have seen it and you are ok with it!
Secondly, you have millions of readers all over the world, do you think that we would let you have that silent heart attack?? Noo, because we would all pray to God and He wouldn’t stand that buzzing of our complaints all day long if He took you away from here; oh and because of that book you are writing ,would have left unfinished. You have work to do! A book to write, adventures, experiences, give quality time to us with your stories and stuff. And you owe us RAM-Tradition thing you have promised!
So, i think there is a hard negotiation going on here!
Relax and take care of yourself!

the doctor said I would die in 30 days IF I decided not to do the intervention. I did it in 30 Nov 2011

Suela February 29, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Yes, I understood that Paulo. And that is a good decision you made nevertheless.
And of course God sent you your dearest friend that suggested you do that test, and definitely we should take care of ourselves by the means that we here possess such as science, medicine and self-preservance.
By saying ” Of course you wouldn’t die in thirty days” i meant, that for some reasons it would be avoided, as it finally did, not that you would have lived even if you didn’t proceed to the angioplasty. :)
What i was trying to say is that miracles are everyday here. The function as we all do. The signs are here. Love is here..
God is here, nothing is random all happen for a reason.

Yilmaz February 29, 2012 at 1:23 am

I just found this funny quote. I’m sure you are fine with the humour because we all need to laugh at ourselves and not be so serious once in a while. :)

A doctor gave a man six months to live. The man couldn’t pay his bill, so he gave him another six months. (Henny Youngman)

May you live long and still make use read your beautiful inspiring books dear Paulo.

With love!

M christine G.
Charming story Yilmaz, very evocative. No one can tell someone how long he has left to live, it would be very presumptuous, doctors are not there to substitute for Providence, but only there to treat and reduce suffering. We can just tell someone he has an increased risk of dying prematurely if you do not treat his condition. When a patient asks such questions, I answer, what it is possible to estimate based on their personal risk and current knowledge, but I also told him: “Be careful when leaving the office, you can always being crushed by the bus! “It is God who leads probably your destiny, with your personal support, and not the medical community, despite all his efforts … M Christine G.

I know it is nice of me to ask you these things, BUT I THINK IT IS IMPERATIVE TO SAY IT BEFORE WE WILL LOSE YOU. TOO SOON. I personally, want you to live FOREVER! :-)

Hola Paulo,

I am pleased you listened to wisdom! Because although you can lead a horse to water, it is not so easy to get them to drink.

My father died aged 41 years old of this, the doctors didn’t detect it in time. He left two very young children and a devastated widow … I am very glad you have not suffered the same fate, and God has granted us your presence for a while longer.

Wishing you much love, and thank you for highlighting this disease, which will bring more awareness and hopefully stop other women from becoming widows too young!

This news about your “silent heart attack” was mentioned in our Swiss newspaper too. It was a short article in yesterday’s newspaper. It was titled ” Paulo Coelho not afraid to die.” It grabbed my full attention, of course.

As we all know – “the unknown of an illness can be frightening.”
But in your case, the continued support of your millions of readers, friends and loved ones is something you can always be sure of… now more than ever. And most of all, we thank God for putting you back in full bloom.

Cheers. Best regards to Christina.

I suspect your Doctor is wrong. But even if he is right, death comes to everyone but unlike everyone you’ve lived a very satisfying and meaningful life. And you know this is not truly the end. I can’t speak for your close friends but I know you will definitely live on through your books in the hearts of your fans. Take care.

Dear Paulo,
A few years back I was holidaying in France. It was a very hot Summer and it killed many people.

That particular night was stinking hot. I was lying on the bed in the living room and I heard Mum growling at Dad, I went to see what was happening. I put the fan on – the room was steaming and Dad was perspiring a lot – I asked him what was the matter and he said he had a bit of pain here – and he pointed to his chest. I gave him some water to drink and I ‘ll come back in a little while . I was up and down a good part of the night – I suspected he was having a heart attack -

Went to check and he was not too sure – he felt a bit better and he thanked me. I gave him another drink and told Mum I wanted to call the SAMU. I was concerned about Dad.
I then knocked onto my brother’s door who was sleeping across theirs. He got up and we had a talk about that. He was not too sure – possibly the heat had affected him – Anyhow, I decided to go ahead. My instincts were telling me something was not right.

The person answering the call noted the address and asked me what the symptoms were. I described them to her. She then said that an ambulance would be here soon. We waited and it seemed like an eternity…

The ambulance arrived with the Doctor who was driving it himself and two nurses.
I gave the Doctor my Dad’s history. He looked at it and confirmed Dad was having a heart attack, He gave him an injection. The decision-making happened within minutes. They then opened what looked like a sleeping bag with four handles and took him down to the ambulance. I had never seen anything like that before.
I followed the Doctor and the nurses downstairs , When the ambulance was opened, it looked like a Hospital theater to me. The Doctor said if need be they use it on the spot to operate the patient.

I recalled thinking how lucky the people were to have such an excellent health system available to all and that Dad was in good hands if anything happened again – not that I particularly wanted to see that sort of thing occurring – I guess it was re-assuring for me as I was living abroad at the time.
The Doctor then said someone would call and let us know which Hospital Dad was being directed to, And off they went.

As soon as we heard where Dad was, we went straight there.
He was in the Intensive Care Unit and we had to wait for quite a while before being allowed to see him for a brief moment.
We went back later on in the afternoon. Dad, bless him. had a big smile on his face when he saw us.
That’s what I liked about Dad. I never heard him complaining about his ailments and he had many. He used to make a joke of it.

Thanks to the SAMU, Montpellier for that ‘Special night.”
I never found out the name of the Doctor or the nurses.
Total strangers performing miracles at a time you needed it the most.

Take good care of you Paulo,
With love
Marie-Christine
