Ignored by God

by Paulo Coelho on February 29, 2012

Many people tell me: “I often feel that I am ignored by God.Why is it so hard to establish a dialogue with the Divine?”

On one hand we know that it is important to seek God.
On the other hand, life distances us from Him/Her – because we feel ignored by the Divine, or else because we are busy with our daily life.
This makes us feel very guilty: either we feel that we are renouncing life too much because of God, or else we feel that we are renouncing God too much because of life.
This apparent double law is a fantasy: God is in life, and life is in God.
If we manage to penetrate the sacred harmony of our daily existence, we shall always be on the right road, because our daily tasks are also our divine tasks.

When you feel this, just recite in the silence of your heart a beautiful prayer by Thomas Merton:

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going,
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.

Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.

I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.

I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

Life denotes and connotes a journey from conflict to co-existence, rebellion to reconciliation, ignorance to liberation, and innocence to knowledge. More importantaly, everyone’s life is a journey from Siddhartha Gautam to Gautam Buddha or more specifically from the ego to egolessness. Such vicinities are placed in Coelho’s creative adventures. i love it to love myself and others; and whole humanity.

Thank you very much for the nice prayer…. It reminded me of a saying in Islam Allah’s Messenger said that Allah said: He who comes with a good deed, its reward will be ten like that or even more. And he who comes with vice, his reward will be only one like that, or I can forgive him. He who draws close to Me a hand’s span, I will draw close to him an arm’s length. And whoever draws near Me an arm’s length, I will draw near him a fathom’s length. And whoever comes to Me walking, I will go to him running. And whoever faces Me with sins nearly as great as the earth, I will meet him with forgiveness nearly as great as that

There is no need to seek God because He is always with us. The inner voice that we hear is actually His voice, though we prefer to ignore it mostly. Bhagavad Gita says God is present in all living and non-living beings. If we keep this in mind , this world would definitely be a better place to live in.

Dear Paulo,

Your books guide me in my life and I feel its a God’s gift to me that I was introduced to your work. You have helped people in many ways. I sometimes feel that people come to this world for a reason and one of the reason for me to come in this world is to meet you and get enlightened by your work. Thanks for all the work and specially The Alchamist,, Eleven minutes, Veronica decides to die and Aleph. In each book I was able to relate myself.
Thanks, Thanks for helping all of us.

I am nothing but a grain of sand and even smaller than this. HE is beyond measurments..infinite , endless. “Drop” has no option , no individuality and “drop” can never explain the OCEAN, Drop can only lost in OCEAN.. in the ocean of love and kindness. Really we are blind to see HIM and his kingdom.

seems God is not part of someone’s everyday life. taking out God from the self is a common thing anyone does because he sees the other person outside him. Lots of difference when you search within yourself and find all as the true One and no one else.

Paulo,
It’s funny that you write about this as I myself have recently felt like God was not hearing me or I wasn’t praying loud enough.

Two nights ago I decided to ask God to wake me up at 3:00am because my mother told me it’s the best time to talk to him. Me, being a heavy sleeper I did not think it was possible to one, wake me up and two, for him to respond. Long and behold at 3:00am that night my door slammed shut and then open waking me up. I did not know how to react as I did not think that he was hearing me so I hid under th,e covers. Sometimes you think that if God comes to you, you will not fear him. I did not feared him but his presence because it was the strongest presence I have ever encountered.

Aileen

So Paulo.

On 25th January 2011 my beautiful partner Chantelle was involved a car crash…no explanation…she was on her own and not even travelling at 30 miles an hour. She has been in a coma and unconscious state ever since. This is God’s will that she suffers and her family and I suffer? I find this so very hard to accept my friend. She is beautiful and harmed no one and was always positive and bright and spiritual….as was I….now there is only darkness and waiting and there are no answers to this. Only sadness. 1 year and one month and one week and one day later….there is no God …there is no universal righteousness this is pure evil.

Reply

Paulo Coelho March 1, 2012 at 1:24 am

I agree there is no answer, and who am I to try to find one?
That said, the absence of answers doesn’t mean evil. It means we are still blind to many things

Sanja March 1, 2012 at 8:20 am

Dear John,

God is so good to your Chantelle. She is so beautiful to you even now. You love her so much. God didnt’t take her away from you, she is there with you, in coma, but she is still there. She can hear you, she can feel you care, she know that somebody loves her. There is still hope.
I am praying for you right now!

This is a wonderful post. It reminded me of a phase in my own journey. It was as if I came into this world knowing God – then, as a child, I started listening to other people. And I have been seeking him ever since. But what came to me recently is that, in all these years that I keep seeking a true connection to God – reading, studying, meditating – what I only now know is that All of this time, He/She has been connected to me. I don’t need to search, God is here already.

Thank you for posting this.

At the beginning of becoming spiritual, there are many, including me, who believe that we can connect fully to god only when not working. But spiritual encounter and development doesn’t only happen during a backpacking trip.

Prayer in spare time guides us the way, but hard work gives us the muscles. Another awesome quote from Paulo Coelho: “Knowledge without transformation is not wisdom”. :)

The path may be narrow; yet all roads lead to Rome…

If our heart is in the right place (focussed on pleasing our creator), we cannot go wrong; even when we go wrong.

Beautiful life!

This is an exciting topic. Our creator to please. This means knowing how to do it? I’m not sure whether the heart is sufficient for it. For some reason, no idea why, God has given us understanding. All roads lead to Rome, perhaps, but not all roads lead to Rome that must lead to God. I think it is reasonable to live a life where you can even look in the mirror, because if God is in everything, then he is in the mirror too. Just a thought.

I wish you all a wonderful evening

This post was of much help for me today. Once more, I got help in remembering how it was to never feel apart from God, of how it was in never needing to find out about God or how to get closer to it. Remembering how it was to not have a clue about the divine, holy, saint, etc about such differences. All there is it was always there including God’s presence, although I couldn’t see a face, I could find God in a dusty leave of a tree or a small flower, since tall and short, wide or narrow, big or little didn’t matter one more than the other and I loved that without even needing to know it.
Beautiful memories to remember! :D Beautiful way to see. :)))

THE DIVINE. I have talked to Him often. I talk to his many angels and saints , my angels ,guides and masters. I meditate and visualize lying in his cupped hands and resting, then I slowly let him know my worries, my fears, my gratitude, happiness and disappointment’s. Then I rest and listen, and he talks to me. If I let myself go and listen. If I let myself be overwhelmed I cannot hear Him. It has taken a while but He has taught me to hear him. Blessings.

Thank you very much sir for the nice prayer. It will definitely be useful to lead our path of life. If we believe god is with us, and if we believe god is within us. It’s just a need to feel he dwells within. That’s it.. And it reminded me one school prayer that I wanted to share few lines of it with you,
‘IN THE CHAMBERS OF MY HEART A SHRINE I’VE FOR THEE, COME ON LORD, COME ON LIVE, COME DOWN DWELLEN ME…’
Thank you once again for making my heart to listen his words through your words..!

“I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you”
For me, this is the most powerful concept in this shared quote. It is the Intent surrounding what propels action, sparking the heart to be more alive in the soul & the soul more alive in the heart, of and in the body of the human being.
Ahhh how refreshing ♥

I liked many books by Paulo but he/you should cut the God crap out. What is that supposed to do? I have faith in the natural processes and scientific explanations… God is for the weak minds who are too lazy to look into reality and do the research. The mind is very powerful but the body has the last word. Just watch anyone that has gone through traumatic events (which means everyone) People are such suckers for superstition and a false sense of purpose.

Natural processes and scientific explanations all point to the existence of God I only have one question for u, how did u exist if there was no God???
and if u’re so logical give me one proof that God doesn’t exist, and don’t say that no one saw God or heard from him before, cause if that’s so , then better turn off your laptop cause electricity doesn’t exist according to ur logic, think about it…

Ritu March 1, 2012 at 6:37 am

Do you feel pain or hurt but you experience it. Same way try to feel God and you will experience the best. Feel him and try to talk to him and you will get all your answer which your scientific explanation fails togive.

“If we manage to penetrate the sacred harmony of our daily existence, we shall always be on the right road, because our daily tasks are also our divine tasks.”
Find the brand divine in our daily tasks, to be projected into the sky, is not easy. We do not even think, and we continue the task without looking up. Rare are the days when time calms, and leaves us the leisure to think. I believe that we can find heaven in the eyes of Him to whom we brought a little comfort, relieving, or pleasure. And if it was possible to cross that kind of look, at least once each day, then our lives will be less vain. M Ch. G

Marie-Christine, I have seen the divine in so many eyes lately.Thank you for reminding me. A friend organizes regulary an event for the Homeless to give them warm food, cloth and other useful stuff for free, especially now in the cold.

When reaching them a warm soup and talking with them about life, it is just exactly that feeling of heaven. However, when we go to our daily work and do something that we don’t like, we still find God, because he speaks to us even then saying: “Do it anyway, but understand what you don’t like and learn from it for the next stop, then move on with your endless journey”. Like Santiago in the Alchemist, I believe that every work we do is just another step that brings us closer to that place.

With love.

Marie-Christine Grimard March 1, 2012 at 3:46 pm

Yes, Yilmaz, that’s exactly what I meant. And your story “is just exactly that feeling of heaven “… My own sense of heaven. Thanks to you, dear, for your words as always. Blessings. M Christine

I think the reason is no one told us we (as a whole) ARE God, and have you ever tried to reason with yourself??? Do you remember who won, or how the conversation ended? We are not used to paying attention to our internal dialogue, but God in Us ALWAYS does. So that feeling of being ignored is actually by us and for us. Learn to love yourself and listen to yourself…ALWAYS… And God will ALWAYS be connected!
