The key symbolizes not only the power to open and to close, but also the power to “tie and untie” those that carry it.
In Christian iconography, Peter, the apostle, carries the keys of heaven that Christ gave him. Also, in the Apocalypse it is said that a great key is used in order to lock the devil for a thousand years in the abyss.
The tongue is also said to be the key of the mouth: enabling one not to pronounce ill thoughts. In cities, the presence of keys in their flags alludes to the sovereignty of the place.
